At this point it just feels like the Cards are completely snake bitten on relievers. Weren’t most of Maddux’s bullpens with Washington poor as well?
Miller appears to be a shell of his former self. Cards fail to capitalize on a good opportunity in the 8th. Feels like they’re trying to swim in quicksand.
It’s over as Fowler Ks to end it. Best Cards can do is hope to avoid the sweep tomorrow. Hopefully they’ll be ready to give a better performance then
Maddux had one good pen & one bad pen in DC.
Thanks got the info, Euro. I know the Nats seem to have struggled to close out games for some time, but wasn’t sure how long he coached there.

Given how nightmarishly poor the Cardinal front office has been lately at evaluating MLB talent — both their own and that of other teams, as well as free agents — I fully expect Redbird fans to regret the Goldschmidt extension before it even begins.
I realize this is well-trod ground but it really is an astonishing record of futility over the past couple of years. Fowler, Ozuna, Pham, Voit, Piscotty, Grichuk, Andrew Miller, Holland, Gregerson, Cecil, and Marco Gonzales. Each radically mis-evaluated.
Mozeliak and/or his scouts were among baseball’s best for 7 or 8 years. But they’ve been so horrible lately that I’m forced to concur with those calling for Mo’s head. The Andrew Miller fiasco is the final tipping point. (It doesn’t help that intellectual cipher Mike Shildt makes Mike Matheny look like a cross between Earl Weaver and Casey Stengel.) The front office is so terrible now that it wouldn’t shock me if they signed Craig Kimbrel tomorrow for 50-60 million bucks (and the lost draft pick of course), only to watch him post a 6+ ERA with the birds on the bat.
It’s a testament to the draft and development people that the personnel looks okay going forward. But the club probably does need a front office overhaul at this point, as Mo can apparently no longer be trusted to make any decision involving pitching or free agency or staffing (see Shildt/Maddux/Lilliqist/Mabry/Albert). The only one worth his salt among that quintet was Lilly, the guy Mo fired. Okay, it’s way too soon to tell with Jeff Albert — but like Andrew Miller the results are far from what was expected.
Expect the #STLCards to announce a roster move for bullpen depth tomorrow. Alex Reyes was packing for Memphis in the clubhouse after the game.

I thought going to the bullpen early philosophy that the sabregeeks preached on throughout baseball was going to revolutionize the game as we know it. Seems to me were about 3-4 years away from putting skirts on the starting rotation to differentiate them from the bullpen guys!
I know one thing! Waino will give us the best 4-5 innings that he can. Only thing giving me hope is it’s a lefty on the mound. Only issue is will Schildt do what he’s got to do and bat bader higher in the order?
From what I’ve seen of this team and its limited. It’s a team yet again that has fallen short in hedging their bets and adding more depth via FA. Team needed another lefty and added nothing. Team needed a lefty bat off the bench and didn’t want to spend for it. Plan B for the late inning situation. Oh no worries! We’ll roll out with Miller and Hicks and Reyes. One guy had an off year, one guy coming off injury and another while having blazing stuff was a tad inconsistent last year. This is the championship teams a built.
This is not good ball were playing. It’s BS! Team needs to wake up and get out Jupiter mode. They must miss Orchids of Asia!
This is not Alex Reyes’ fault. He just wasn’t ready for this role yet. One would think others in the organization would have realized this before yesterday. By the end of the year these mistakes add up big time. Something tells me similar miscues lay just over the immediate horizon.
Small yard grass needed cutting badly and rain was about a mile away so I skipped out to do a 10 minute quick job. It didn’t take that long for Miller – who entered as I left – to do a quick job – on his own team. I have always been very happy about getting Goldy but never thought much of the Miller deal. For me the guy has been on the downhill slide. He looked great against the Cubbies in the series but no more.
Still perplexed about MLB game schedule. We play Brewers 10 times before the end of April; two game series for no particular reason with the Pirates and Reds; Boston has played 10 games and NONE at home yet. Weird. I think the MLB scheduling computer has been hacked by the Chinese.
Tough start to season … all us not lost though. It is hard to win when the offense strikes out so much, creates almost zero sustained rallies and the pitchers walk so many hitters. The club is beating itself.
Seems that the FO is pushing the “slight panic” button already. It’s probably merited. Hopefully Reyes can get his mechanics ironed out in Memphis. Much like big free agent signings, our top prospects have had something of a curse on them late, and it’s sad to see.
Looking back on TCN’s top prospects by year, it has been nearly ten years since we selected a guy who actually made a real impact on a season (Jaime Garcia) and it’s between Garcia and Colby Rasmus as to who had the best “career” as a Cardinal. That’s very poor and might be the worst of any team in the majors in those 13 seasons. Now, other prospects did better but it’s still a bad look when your “star” prospects haven’t produced one even good player in almost 20 years (was Pujols the top guy ever?).
