<Headline: Carpenter day to day after painful foul ball>
Let’s be honest here. Carpenter is day to day regardless of a foul ball and even if he is in the lineup. I have to admit though that his defense has improved markedly while his offense has become offensive.

Kudos to Miles Mikolas for that 100 pitch complete game shutout. That and Tyler ONeil coming to life show there are signs of life in the formerly moribund Cardinals. Surprising was the fact that the Pirates have the best team batting average in the National League (or was it only in the central)

Dex made a stretch and the catch – two attaboys. Kolten – defense continues to be superlative even if some say he should be traded.

Now let’s see if Flaherty can show some improvement in the NO HR department.

Thanks ATFTC and EW. Never too old to learn something new. FWIW, none of the ‘expert’ baseball fans at my pulmonary rehab class knew the answer either.

Question for any baseball expert. I have played baseball in elementary, jr high, high school and college but have never seen something I saw yesterday. I think I may have missed something but can anybody tell me how Waino was awarded two bases for a throw that went into the dugout?
With Waino on 1B, the batter hit a line drive to the SS who caught it on the fly and threw wild to 1B. The ball landed in the dugout and Waino was headed back to the base or had already arrived. My question is why was he awarded two bases on that play? Is that a new rule or did I miss something on the play?

A while back the Royals were saying that Merrifield was the one they wanted to build the team around so I would be surprised if they traded him. I am mystified by those who want to trade Wong for just about anybody but opinions are like rear ends (including mine). They all stink.

<Nice to get the series win. Figures that they beat Greinke. >

Nice to beat a pitcher earning 33.3 million per year – about 1 million per game.

<At this point we need to see more of Gallegos and less of Brebbia. At least until Brebbia gets his ship righted.>

He just became a new daddy. Fatherhood (and late night feedings and diaper changes) tend to do that. Thankfully, back in my day that was ‘women’s work’…….LOL

<Yes I knew the paid attendance was high but the actual attendance not so much.>

Agree. I think a lot of folks figured watching the TV at home in air conditioning beat sitting in that brutal sun. More and more empty seats as the game went on and it was not full even at the start.

<This Tim Locastro fellow for AZ. may be baseball’s next Ron Hunt as he was just hit for the 21st time this year….7 of them were in the minors. And just like Ronny Hunt, Locastro almost seemed to enjoy the experience.>

Can you imagine how Gibby would have made this guy change his position in the box? One in the ear was all it would take. If you looked close at Locastro, his feet were actually out of the box toward the plate – at least the tips of them were. HBPs need to be looked at by MLB. The batter must take evasive action if not swinging. If in the act of swinging or starting to swing – no HBP. But none of that seems to matter these days.

I still remember that this team has the best record in the major leagues through April. Yeah I know that was only a month but it does show that they have the capability.

<Shildt apparently hasn’t been able to offer much inspiration. IMO he is a sub .500 type of manager……… >

His record as a manager all through the minors does not support that with facts but it is your opinion. I can understand that. Have yet to hear a single gripe about him from any team member but I can’t recall if Pham was traded before or after Matheny was fired.

<If they were 10-12 games out and well under .500 they could start dumping dead weight and play prospects.>

2011 – mid August – 10.5 games out; won Wild Card, Won NLCS, Won World Series. The only dead weight they dumped was Colby Rasmus. Just sayin.

I too am a bit disappointed in Goldy but I also think his defense has saved us a lot of misery too compared to what was manning 1B before. Carp has always been known as the ‘milkman’ milking for walks. As as consequence he tends to watch center cut strikes go right by and swing at the trash for strike 3. The #1 leadoff position has been a dead zone this season and many have been tried there. The rookie has done the best there but Carps return seemingly has put the rookie back on the bench. Perhaps that Golden Sombrero that Carp came up with last night will convince Shildt that Edman deserves some more playing time (in Carp’s place). Yeah you gotta pay him but you don’t have to play him if you are interested in wins. But I will bet he is starting again today. I am also guessing that Andrew Kinizer (sp?) will be starting also to keep Wieters a bit fresh.

I do see Goldy and Mikolas coming around enough to help the club but Goldy has always been a strikeout guy. He had a big hit stolen last night by Dyson but then Dyson had a big hit stolen by Dexter so I guess that evens it out.

The motormouths in the booth were really on a criticism kick of the whole team until TO hit that double scoring two runs. Then they sounded like the Cards were WS champs. I am really disappointed when they concentrate on the negative so much. It is what it is but Danny Mac loves to preach a sermon on it. He actually thinks he is managing from the booth like his buddy McCarver. Home team announcers don’t normally stay on the downer stuff constantly like this crew does.

Prayers for Bob Gibson. That was a BALLPLAYER in every respect. His stats put today’s crop of pitchers to shame.

The lineup today should be interesting with regard to Carp’s inclusion or not and batting position if he is in the game. Last night his batting looked the same as earlier this season – look at two strikes and swing away at the third. Golden Sombrero was well deserved and he was on his way to 5 had the Make-A-Wish kid not been in the booth. What is 5 strikeouts called? Platinum Sombrero? Or Trade-em-Away Hat?

My dad died with that disease but that was in 1943 and I hope they have made improvements in treatment.

Sat 7/13. Looks like Springfield fans will be getting hosed even more on parking and some of the natives are taking it as no problem. https://tinyurl.com/y695lp7g
The team is playing better winning 10 of the last 12 home games but it is ridiculous that it will cost more to park than to buy a large portion of the game tickets. Walking distance is not best for a lot of folks including disabled.

McLaughlin has a lot of disdain for Martinez – until he hits a home run. Last night he jumped on JMarts case for an error – bobble – that allowed a runner to reach 2B on a single. But then he stretched it out to where that error was critical to the Cards success/failure. He even got motormouth Thompson to agree with him. But when the inning ended with no bad results as a consequence of the error he then added that Martinez got off the hook. McLaughlin does this everytime with Martinez. He loves to try and manage the game from the booth. When he teams with McCarver it gets even more ridiculous. But his favorite player, Carpenter returned to the lineup last night and the praise was evident from the booth. JMHO which I am told we are allowed to express here. I am also told that opinions of my opinion are not to be tolerated….LOL.

WOW. I know I have looked at some of their pay scales and they border on ridiculous in this day and age. If the membership could be made up of long term members (which it is definitely not) a union could probably be formed but it is a bit surprising that some smart group of lawyers hasn’t taken on such a venture as trying to improve working conditions (pay). With enough adverse publicity, MLB could take a real smear in the media and that seems to be what it takes these days to get any results. But then, I am sure the problem has been looked at from all angles and the Players Association probably sees it as detracting from the major league salaries. When does a player become eligible for the PA – when he comes to the major leagues or just on the 40 man?

Brian, is it right that minor leaguers are NOT paid for spring training? Are they provided anything in the way of housing or food during ST? If true that is a real disgrace.

I am loving it. If we had gotten Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Murphy, Donaldson and still wound up in 2nd place it would have meant nothing if, as most seem to preach, the goal is to win the World Series. Making the playoffs may be wonderful and bring in a few extra bucks but I am told over and over on these forums that only one thing matters – the World Series. Matheny was raked over the coals when the Cards failed to win in ’13 (as was Mo and anybody else that had a name associated with the FO).

But, using 20/20 hindsight, we can say that the same thing would have happened for the Cards if only they had gotten Murphy. All I say is that is pure guessing, nobody will ever know.

I just finished reading a book by Scott Kelly who spent one year on the International Space Station and he said the lesson he learned was to not concentrate on those items which you can only speculate and stay fast to those you can control. I am happy to let management run the team but I do recognize that a lot of fans like to run a lot of options for winning by other fans. Have at it but unless you control the actions you suggest be sure to realize that it is just fan talk and there is no use in bad mouthing those who are responsible.

<They got Murphy last year for nothing when we could have used him and IMO that swung the the season last year for the Cubs.>

Yep, old Murph got them 2nd place. As Bear Bryant said, “Second place is like kissing your sister.”

In most cases, apologies are meaningless. Thinking before doing never requires apologies. In other words if you mean something say it and stick with your words. I have no doubt his apology was brought on by outside criticism which was well deserved. To me the smartest athletes are those who stay off social media and don’t involve themselves with the anti-everything crowd.

I just came across Yadi’s rant on the PD story. I just call him Yadi the Potty Mouth. He can barely speak English but seems to have mastered the F word and uses it liberally on a kids social media site. Yadi was a great baseball player and is still a very smart and good player but his social media antics are tiring. From now on when he hits into one of his frequent double plays and is just trotting down the line I will be reminded that he is just Yadi the Potty. Funny how the younger guys hustle and beat out double plays but it gets ridiculous when the 2B sits and has a cup of coffee before he throws to 1B and Yadi is not yet in the picture. Yes he is slow and has a hard position but there are times when the ball is muffed and he is still thrown out. You are never embarrassed when you hustle.

I know, I know – I have insulted the God of all Cardianals. Fire away.

BTW – I can understand why he is upset with the play but his method of expression is what pains me.

<Jose Martinez is an athlete. I see no reason why he cannot become as graceful as a swan out there in right field.>

How many 6’7″ swans do you know that play the outfield. Combine that with swans who have a very bum knee that has been told the next time it is injured the career is over. I don’t blame him for not diving and I would say each of his steps is about 3 of mine but if my knee had been reconstructed with a menicsus from a cadaver I would be respectful of the poor dead sob who made the donation and not wreck it on a baseball field. I have to admit – I like Jose Martinez but he didn’t help much today and I sure wish he would get a few inches closer to the plate
