What do you think – pro or con? I’d appreciate some feedback before I take this to SABR.

That seems like as good of a process as any Brian. I agree the current format is contrived, much like the Heisman in college football. I am just not a big fan of individual awards though. I think we spend too much time worrying about them instead of what the team is doing.
Bye bye, Rawlings. “Walton’s Gold Glove” award could soon become a household name. Just a minor tweak; Announcing the finalists a full month prior to season’s end is just a bit too long. I would go with Sept. 15th, with the Top 4 in SDI. Also, why not give the fans a say? Maybe select the winner by 50% SDI, 40% managers and coaches and 10% fans. Great work, Brian!
With respect to awards I have always had trouble with baseball award recipients being described as “reigning” such as “reigning MVP”. An MVP is an award for being the most valuable player for a past season and not for the one you are currently playing so how can he be “reigning? About the only ‘reigning’ title is for beauty queens who hold the title until the next year. So there. There will not be test on this information as long as rain does not mess up our reigning…….lol
Pugs, those are good ideas, but I have a question or two.
How many fans would actually know enough about San Diego shortstop’s defense or Miami’s first sacker to vote credibly? I watch a lot of baseball and I am not sure I could do it well. Seems like it would just be a popularity contest (likely urged on by teams). Today, the managers and coaches are not allowed to vote for their own guys to avoid this built-in favoritism. I don’t see a way around that with fans involved. Do you?
The other thought that was far beyond my idea was to make the SDI 50% of the final score. I suggested leaving it out of the actual voting. But your way, the top SDI guys are likely to win the vote as well. I doubt the powers that be would be willing to elevate SDI to being that dominating.
