    Paid - Annual

People always propose a basket of spare parts instead of the prospect the other team wants. They play in Denver, they want a slugging prospect. Probably also a pitching prospect who keeps it low in the zone.

We pick up one 40 man spot. Hello Brad Miller.

Nigel, the Cards already had two 40-man openings, which I figured were for Yadi and the DH. Now they may have another.

Whoa. I know jj is high on Gomber but I would not miss any of the guys who are listed in Rosenthal’s possibles. If that’s the guys that outfit the trade, then consider me happy. Even if Arenado is simply very good instead of elite going forward, this could be a steal for the Cards.

Thanks Brian. Let’s change it to Miller and Rosie.

Wow. I did not think the Cardinals would really pull this off. And the trade package going back to Colorado, if it is close to what is reported, seems like a win for the Cardinals.

Now, they also have a way of keeping Carpenter’s option from vesting.

Looks like they got him. Wow. I’m in shock. Gotta give it up for the Cardinals. This is a huge big balls move.

Oh man, if this is true, it blows my mind. I’ve been wanting this for a long while, I didn’t think the Cardinals management had it in them. If it’s true, the central is ours to lose, and with just a little luck, we can dream even higher

We are getting $50 million from the Rockies. Mo needs to thank Walt for the lessons.

This is called going all in. We got Arenado for Realamuto’s deal. I was lamenting how affordable the market is, but Mo got his man at market price.Brilliant. He has now done it twice.

Cards taking a big gamble here…

Heck of a time for the site to crash out.

BW, if the rumored players are what we give up (Torres, Baker, Rondon/Woodford, Gomber), I don’t think it’s that huge of a gamble. It’s hard to imagine Arenado walking after 2021 and even if he does after 2022, the Cards likely got the two best years he’s gonna have going forward and would then have a big pile of money to spend again. If Gorman is somehow part of the deal, I would agree that the gamble is bigger. Otherwise, we may have traded two guys who never make the big leagues for us and two back end starters that we have much better alternates already nearing St Louis (talking about Oviedo and Liberatore/Thompson).

    Jager:

You’ve done it again. I bet Mo is on the phone right now to Colorado, with Junior on the extension, and they are just working out the fine details. I’m going out tomorrow to get my Arenado Jersey. Yes! Yes! Yes!

The volume of traffic today is overloading the server. I apologize for the this and am actively looking to move to a different hosting service.

I have to agree with you, stlcard25. The size of the gamble was overstated. This looks like a good deal for the Cardinals, but we don’t have all the details yet.

If Arenado is keeping the opt out then yes it is a big gamble for the Cards. They are counting on their old strategy of the player loving St. Louis.

On the flip side, that seems like a very light package of prospects we are sending back. Very light. We get to keep Gorman and all of our other top prospects.

What about Colorado taking back one of our big contacts? I guess that is what the $50M is about. Man the Rockies must have been more desperate than we imagined. Great job to the Cardinal front office!

I’m guessing that Carp and Fowler both said no way to waiving their no trade clauses or Colorado didn’t really want them that much anyway.

Reading the Colorado fan sites today, it sounded like their owner may be crying poorer than Dewitt was even. So the return of potentially 4 guys who could all contribute as major leaguers including a potential star in Torres may have been a gamble they were willing to pay $50M to have happen (as opposed to $200M and a disgruntled star or opt out with nothing but a draft pick).

The only way he opts out is if he thinks he can get a higher annual value on his contract. If he has the type of year where someone would pay him more at 31 than 8years/260 then we’ll probably all be happy with where we’re at come the end of the season.
