SEA will probably give Murphy a chance to re-establish his value
COL looks STL type of thin at catcherIf MIA views themselves as a contender, catcher needs attention, but how willing would they be to spend after tendering Alfaro for 2.1mil
Wallach was forced in as their postseason catcher and they did have interest in Contreras this winter, fwiw.COL, MIA and STL could be markets for Yadi, but none are viewed as “spending”, yet.
January 29, 2021 at 7:44 am #152660In other words, nobody has any idea when… Though the one-year offer is noteworthy…
Further to this: have heard in a couple places that Molina’s unlikely to sign before his team, Criollos de Caguas, is eliminated from the Caribbean Series. Final is set for February 6th — next few days, indeed. https://t.co/HfE46WoZaT

January 29, 2021 at 10:04 am #152689Why would you sign Yadi before he is done playing this winter. If Yadi does have a second updated offer, his re-signing seems quite probable.
January 29, 2021 at 12:13 pm #152704In a media call this morning, Wainwright was asked about Yadi. He said that Molina’s market was slower to develop than Yadi thought it would. He also said the same thing I have been saying – that other teams thought the two would return to St. Louis. (Yet Waino got a number of good offers, he said.)
January 29, 2021 at 3:33 pm #152718Yadier Molina is expected to sign with the #STLCards after the Caribbean Series, if not before then, source says. @ElNuevoDia was the first to report that St. Louis had made Molina a 1-year offer and that he is likely to sign soon. @MLB @MLBNetwork @LasMayores

January 30, 2021 at 6:29 pm #1529061982 willieParticipantI’m hopeful molina signs, I think he should be willing to take more days off. You almost have to think this year is it and the Cardinals have to have a viable replacement which means that person needs to see some action this year. I guess we could try to get someone during next off-season via trade or free agency.
January 31, 2021 at 10:44 am #15294814NyquisTParticipantIf Molina wants to play he will play. I don’t see any way that will change. Yadi is allergic to the pine.
January 31, 2021 at 10:58 am #152949Nothing like livin’ on the edge for Mozeliak. If Yadi would have signed elsewhere by now, Mo would have been screwed. With Arenado coming to St. Louis, and Carlson emerging, this is a championship team. With due respect to Knizner, there’s no way he should be the starting catcher. Yadier Molina should be the starting catcher.
January 31, 2021 at 11:16 am #152952At this point Molina should pretty much sign whatever the Cardinals stick in front of him.
He has to be set, set, set financially, he’s an icon in StL, Wainwright is back in the fold, and the team is finally in a position to contend again – from his standpoint; what’s not to like?
January 31, 2021 at 12:40 pm #152964QUESTION…….
Does playing winter ball help or hurt Molina? Seems like it would add more stress and time on his legs and take away from what he has left in the tank.
Or is it not even worth mentioning, not really a consideration, and not a big deal at all?

January 31, 2021 at 12:51 pm #152968To date, Molina has not caught, so the risk of injury is lessened. But getting hurt would be the biggest concern, I think. I guess he is trying to show other teams he is good shape and ready to go.
It is also a big deal to Puerto Rico if they win, though that is probably not his primary consideration.
January 31, 2021 at 12:56 pm #152970Yeah, I read that Molina is their DH
January 31, 2021 at 4:02 pm #152983NEWS: Yadier Molina is playing first base, batting fifth, in Puerto Rico’s Caribbean Series opener tonight — against Dominican Republic starter Carlos Martínez. @Cut4 @MLBNetwork @LasMayores @MLB

January 31, 2021 at 8:11 pm #153002Imagine the Cards going deep into post-season. What is it worth at that moment to have Molina on the roster? And how much difference does in make how long it takes him to get down to first? It sounds like Mo is on the right page with this.
February 3, 2021 at 10:44 am #153303Agent kicking up some dust via Casino Jon to get the Cards to raise their ante?
Blue Jays still have interest in legendary catcher Yadier Molina and have been in contact. Expectations have been that he returns to St. Louis, where he’s an icon. But nothing’s done, and a couple other teams are still in play.

February 6, 2021 at 7:28 pm #153659I think the Caribbean Series final game is tonight, anybody have an update?
February 8, 2021 at 7:13 pm #153817The inevitable is near. The Cardinals are close to bringing back free-agent catcher Yadier Molina, a source tells @TheAthletic.

February 8, 2021 at 7:23 pm #153818Yadier Molina back to Cards. 1 year.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) February 9, 2021
February 8, 2021 at 7:49 pm #153820I really hope some people have the balls to sit Molina on a regular basis in order to give Knizner plenty of playing time this year.

February 8, 2021 at 7:50 pm #153821Yadier Molina agreement with Cards is for $9M
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) February 9, 2021
February 8, 2021 at 8:05 pm #1538231982 willieParticipantSeemd good. I’m not really fond of knizner. I know he can hit a bit but I believe in having a better defensive catcher than offensive. Catcher position has been one of our strengths going back to the nineties, going to seem odd after molina is gone.
February 8, 2021 at 8:07 pm #153824$9M…how much of that is the legacy bonus? A little higher than I expected but not much.
February 8, 2021 at 8:20 pm #153825Reasonable salary and the best catcher option left on the market.
February 8, 2021 at 8:27 pm #153828Now official. But the team’s press release writer must have the evening off…
We are excited to announce that we have agreed to terms with Yadier Molina on a new contract!
We will have more details tomorrow on Yadi continuing his Cardinals legacy.
— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) February 9, 2021
February 8, 2021 at 8:38 pm #153830I want to develop play ers, but Yadi playing 140 games grinding to a WS championship is far more desirable than making sure your young catcher has a solid chance to hit .278. People should think about what would truly be great, and dream on that instead of back up catcher development.
