If Arenado opts out in 21 or 22, which I don’t think he will, Gorman is our third baseman, so I don’t think he should be moved unless he cannot handle the position.

I saw the same wording and wondered if he was guessing about that. It would be great for the Cardinals if true, but dumb on the part of the Rockies.

As for opt out(s), Holliday and Goldschmidt are testimonials and will help convince Nolan to stay.
This is a comment from the PD story regarding the trade. The opt-outs are a major concern of mine and the only convincing will be $$.
Some other thoughts:
There’s been a lot of talk about Gorman moving to other positions. He has never played a pro game other than third base.Gorman playing 2B? Its a tough spot for a guy with Gorman’s defensive abilities. Even LF is a stretch for him IMO.
I remember reading something about Carlson being a corner outfielder only and that has stuck in my mind.
That being the case the young outfielders we have will be fighting for a backup role in ’21.
I’ll bet that the return to COL will be different than what is being speculated on right now. Torres is one of the names being mentioned and of the others he is probably the guy we’ll need the most down the road.
Taking on the Arenado will have some effect on the Molina negotiations. Yadi is demanding two years so if he is signed on here, that money doesn’t go away next season.
As it stands now, there is so much to consider until the deal is finalized but there is a lot to talk about, right?

The emoji I used was meant to show that it was a joke. I hardly ever use emoji. Maybe I picked the wrong one. The one I picked shows a face laughing itself to tears (at the idea of forcing Carp’s bat into the lineup).

Good thoughts, NyquisT. I will address a few of my thoughts on your thoughts:
I think people are all realizing that barring injury or opt out, 1B and 3B are locked down for the foreseeable future. The idea of moving Gorman to a different position is to get a difference making bat into the lineup one way or another. Gorman may not be an elite defender, but I’ve heard nothing concrete and only speculation that he’s not plenty capable of playing 3B. So do you put an early 20s guy who could possibly moonlight at 2B for 100 games, play 3B and 1B 10 times each and DH 30 times as a full time DH? I’ve heard Gorman comped to Mike Moustakas, who also hadn’t played any 2B in his career but has handled it well enough the last year or two.
The book on Carlson is that he could probably play CF in a pinch for a couple years early in his career, then probably need to move to a corner. His accurate arm could play in either LF or RF. Of course, the book on Bader underrated his defense when he arrived as well. I agree that the OF is probably going to be Carlson-Bader-Fowler from LF to RF. My hope is that O’Neill or Thomas show up and play well enough to force their way into the lineup.
As for the return in this trade, I agree that it may be a little different than what’s been put out there. Probably not wildly so, though. Torres could be useful down the road but his runway is getting really short. He could do very well in Colorado with his power and speed combo.
I believe Yadi is reported to be only getting one year when he signs. So maybe that will assuage your anxiety that he will never retire. 😉

Too early for me to judge the trade a fleecing GS. I’d rather wait to see who the clubs announce as traded.
No doubt. My comments were based on the information we have at this moment. If the reports are correct in that the return is some combination of Gomber, Torres, Baker and Woodford that is not a terrible return for the Rockies. Every one of those guys could be a MLB contributor, Torres maybe even a high end contributor. It is just that you would expect a higher quality return for someone of Arenado’s stature. Apparently the Rockies had no leverage or just didn’t know what they were doing. It also speaks highly of the depth of Cardinal farm system.
Now if it turns out that Gorman, Liberatore, Herrera, and Oviedo are all going to Denver we may view this trade differently. I consider Ken Rosenthal to be a professional though. He usually doesn’t just throw garbage out there.

If the reports are true that the Cards are giving Arenado an extra year he will be signed through 2027, with two opt outs.

Correction from a post made above: Arenado would be signed through 2027 with opt outs after 2021 and 2022, not 2026.
If Edman works out, that’s a good stable infield situation
for at least the next 4 years.Edman as a sub who can play 2B, SS, fill in at 3B and CF has plenty of value too. While I think Edman can be an above average player, I think his bat will be averageish and could be limited to 400 or so PA without hurting his overall value.
Have always liked Gomber – a big lefty. He is the type of pitcher who can give you innings. Like all hurlers though, he needs to have more command than he has shown. But guys can get there with command, so he could really help the Rox.
I am not too worried about the opt outs, as in the current MLB climate I do not see Arenado signing elsewhere for more than he is getting on this deal. Some of that will depend on whether St. Louis is competitive the next couple of years. He would likely take less money to go closer to home, that being LA or San Diego.
As you no doubt know, Nolan is a highlight reel on defense. The guy makes unbelievable plays almost every night. Well worth the price of admission.
