Anyone think it was $50 million and they had to redo the players because the Player Union or MLB did want to set something that high? I just find it odd how many names changed, and that (to me) it appears to be lighter.
I saw it’s 15 due for 2021, 20 deferred to later and 16 due in 2027 for extra year, so the Rockies are paying for 2021 and 2027 exclusively.

“Whew” is spot on, stlcard25! The thought of losing ATG (that’s “Alexander The Great” to the layman) in this transaction was a real fear. He may have been a major reason for this deal’s holdup. Not having to include him makes this trade very very sweet indeed.
I spoke to my mother from Colorado Springs earlier tonight and she’s throwing a tizzy over losing Arenado. She and her boyfriend have held season tickets for the last few years and she told me tonight that they are boycotting the team until further notice. I haven’t seen her this riled up since the Rockies traded her favorite 3rd baseman, whom she thought was cute, about 10 years ago. I have since forgot his name, but I think he went on to play for the cubbies for awhile.

So, the $20 million is paid to the Cardinals if Arenado does not opt out, and paid directly to Arenado if he does opt out.

No, I don’t think so. It may just be the wording. As I understand it, the opt outs are still after the 2021 and 2022 seasons, prior to 2022 and 2023.
This ESPN article says the opt outs are after the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Perhaps they are mixed up? MLB says after the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Lets hope that we don’t have to worry about him opting out of either of those 2 years and going to So Cal…
Getting Arenado for free this season seems to be quite the boon. It tells me that the Rockies felt that there was a significant chance that he was going to opt out after this year. Thus, they decided the return from the Cards was better than the sandwich pick. I agree. I am not sure whether the Rockies would fall into the group that would get a pick after the first round or the second round, but they just picked up the Cardinals 3rd rounders from the last two drafts, a legit starting pitcher, a 10th rounder, and Elehuris Montero, who would probably be a top 100 prospect if he hadn’t broken his hamate bone.
I’d look at it like this: they basically bought Gomber for $16M and obtained Montero, Gil, Locey and Sommers for Arenado on a slightly underwater deal with the money they kicked in. Great deal? No…but not as bad as it’s made out to be.
This was a great trade for the Cardinals, but the Rockies did get some talent.
Gomber – 4th round draft pick. Had a 2.98 ERA at Memphis in 2019. Followed that with a 1.86 ERA for the Cards in 2020 in 29 innings.
Montero – Possible replacement for Carp before Gorman fell to us. Rated our #5 prospect in TCN voting recently completed.
Locey – 3rd round draft pick in 2019.

out of the U. Of Georgia. 11-2 for the Bulldogs with a 2.53 ERA. After being drafted, struck out 28 in 15 innings at Peoria. A little wild, but was overpowering.Gil – another 3rd round draftee (in 2018).
17 year old High schooler. At Johnson City in 2019 he hit 7 home runs and drove in 30 in only 51 games. Started to show real potential.Some I’m in the camp that the Rockies got some guys who really may help them downstream.
