The savy knowledgeable baseball guy in me says we should be doing a rebuild and that Goldy and Arenado don’t have enough gas left in the tank to carry us and should have been traded. Never mind the geriatric pitching staff MO put together for his swan song. But the little kid in me who always thought we would win every year hopes the rest of the league thinks like you guys and we get leadershipped into the division win. With 92 victories.
I guess there will be plenty of complaints about Scott. I can see both sides. But he only had 1 Xtra base hit in nearly 40 ab’s. Fans are fickle. Bader was villianized (word?) For his weak offense and he was an elite defensive centerfielder. Scott is the flavor of the day. Last year everyone moaned about Winn not making it after a strong camp. Than when he gets here and flounders offensively everyone switches sides. There’s some who are silly enough to think he should be sent back now (Winn) I’m anxious to see Scott play everyday but I think this is the right thing. Get some aaa at bats and focus on obp.

Burleson has not done enough at the plate to justify his shortcomings as a defensive player. Or enough YET to profile as a DH.
Hope “Burly” does well. I sense he is a good guy. He is going to get opportunities with injuries to Edman and Nootbar. I sincerely hope he is used wisely.
Exactly. I don’t see him as ever being a regular player for the Cardinals. He has a good bat. If he can increase his power #’s, he will have value as a trade piece. That’s what they are doing with all the playing time they’re giving him. Plus they need his bat while Noot and Tommy recover.

@Shady, that lineup looks good, all they need to do is sub in Carpenter and Contreras at 5 and 6 and that’s likely opening day lineup.
Burleson probably won’t be on the od roster, so that is highly likely.
Jose Martinez had a 162 game average of .803 OPS. Burleson is. Under. .700. I. Think. That needs. To. Go. Up.
Snell’s progression through the minors in the Rays system is a perfect example of the classic approach, before elimination of the short season teams. Although he was a first rounder, he did not hit full season ball in low A until his third pro year. He sometimes was held over in a level year to year until he demonstrated mastery of that level. He made his ML debut in his 6th pro year. He didn’t spend his draft year bubble wrapped. He never advanced just due to time served, or got beamed up skipping levels, he had to earn each promotion with results.
I’m not saying every prospect has to spend 6 years in development. But we need to look at what’s been successful for the other teams out there who are developing major league pitching instead of having to buy at the fa counter every year. We have to get much better at evaluating the talent we do have. It sounds like Chaim Bloom will be heavily involved in this process. But the point you make is paramount to the success of the program. We can’t rush these guys up the ladder for need at the major league level.
I’m not going to write 5 paragraphs full of stats and metrics. I don’t need them to see whether a guy can play ball or not. Burleson has a good natural swing. That combined with the fact he bats left handed could buy him some at bats. But the guy doesn’t ever belong on a baseball field unless he’s running the bases. If he’s in left field with Walker in right field, DeWitt should be eating the remainder of Marmols contract.

I think for me, now that it’s soaked in, it was just such a surprise. I probably let mob mentality dictate how I feel about Marmol to some extent. The only thing that really bothered me was the whole O’Neil fiasco. I was in Oli’s corner on the issue. Anyone could see him jaking it. But that stuff stays in the clubhouse or it becomes the huge distraction that it did. Kind of like keeping our posts about baseball, not the fact we have a new poster and his sock puppet account soiling the CN community. I agree with the extension. It let’s the whole organization focus on baseball instead of the inevitable feeding frenzy if the start off slowly.

This front office has gotten weirder and weirder ever since they fired Bubbles. At this point I’m positive MO is trolling the fan base. Seriously. Bill Bidwill and Uncle Rico ( Kroenke) were weird like that too.

Looking at the numbers in that perspective gives me hope. Theoretically, if we finish the season anywhere ahead of the Cubs, I can be ok with that.
There’s only one way off this merry-go-round of mediocrity. And it’s not trading (overpaying) for other teams elite prospects and major league ready pitching talent. All those screaming for Cease would be ready to scalp MO if he gutted our system to pay the price. The only other way is to just be happy where we are at. Maybe that’s OK? The other option isn’t really in play. Larger budget.
Once the season starts I will quit whining about the oldsters and pull for them. I expect them to be slightly above 500 as a group. (Lynn Gibson and Mik)
The classic great season I look at where a guy hit for average, but not home runs yet was very valuable was Dick Groat’s 1963 season. Good average, lots of doubles, but only 6 home runs. Give me guys that can do that and I have no complaints.
Tony Gwynn only hit double digits in homeruns 5 out of 20 seasons, with 17 being the highest. He was pretty good.

We focus on elite pitchingprospects because it gives us hope to have true top of the rotation starters at the major league level. I understand the economics of signing top free agent pitchers. I understand and agree why we don’t do it. I agree that we have a boatload of future back of the rotation guys and bullpen arms. Competing for winning records and wildcards is what that brings us. Hopefully this year’s draft brings an elite pitching prospect. But we need a system to bring more. And losing 70 games every other year isn’t what I have in mind. But it might require losing for a couple years to get the ball rolling.
