And din-din on this fine Sunday will be a Hungry Man’s Turkey & Dressing dinner. Then a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. Along with an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew. And then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar. Me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch for this one.

First time at home since then. It’s Kyle’s second start. Interesting that he is #44 and the Great Gibson was 45.
Think I mentioned in the game thread of Gibson’s last start that 44 always brings to mind Ray Washburn for me. Great talent – looked to be a future star but injuries derailed him and took some of the heat from his fastball. Still carved out a good career, but might have been great had he not had early-career arm issues.
Most people, including myself, think of # 44 belonging to Hank, but I’d also say that a lot of people probably forget that another great slugger from Aaron’s same era also wore # 44 and was the original “Big Mac”…Willie McCovey.
I would be willing to bet that 95% of people in the stands at Busch on any given day would not be able to tell you who Ray Washburn played for, much less McCovey.
I wasn’t convinced that Oli went “all in” on sweeping Schildts Padres, and I’m expecting about the same with Skips club today.
Well, he used his 4 best pen guys yesterday, so ideally he wouldn’t use any of them today. So yeah, you may be right on not going all in. But you can’t just keep using 4 guys every time the game is close.
Hopefully Gibson gets into the 7th inning and takes a little of the workload off the pen.
With the way the game is played these days you would think MLB would allow up to 15 pitchers.
I could see most team keeping 14 with 12 position players on the bench. You’d have the back up catcher, a back up IF, and a back up OF with a premium on guys like Donovan who can play all over the yard.
Also, if it came down to it, whoever was DHing could shed that and move into the field. (Instead of having to decide when to PH for the pitcher you have to decide if you need to put the DH in the field.)
It just seems like there are never enough pitchers what with all the short starts and overuse might lead to more injuries?
Counter point ZTR – Ollie has Fernandez and he’s pitched a total of 1 inning so far. Would we even ever use the 9th pitcher if there was one? Managers are under so much pressure to win each game that they abuse their best guys. Then those best guys fall apart. But if they don’t use those best guys in close games, fans like us get up in arms. But good managers should care about the long objectives and not fans like us. Fans like us will be happy when the team does well overall and eventually forget about not going to Helsley or Gio in a close game back in April.
Interesting enough, the NL Central is the only division where all the teams have a winning record. I’m sure it’s the small sample size, but it is interesting.
It would be fun if Pages got to make his debut today.
If OlliMo isn’t all in today he may regret it since we are playing Philly next. A last place team needs to be all in all the time.

The one Fernandez inning? Game 3, sweep day vs Padres, in the 8th inning, behind by one run and he debuts. That kinda stuff. Winn sat for “scheduled off day” after 6 games, lol.
Anyway, lineup today is our current regulars and no-one in the pen has pitched back to back the last two days. All hands on deck.
SWEEP!It’s not rocket science. Good start by Gibson we have a good chance to sweep. We will score 4 or 5 runs.
I thought Oli showed us yesterday, his best case in hold and save situations, when every reliever is available.
Matz goes 5 scoreless and Oli chooses 4 relievers instead of a long man.
GG faced batters #2 – cleanup (6th)
JoJo faced #5 – #8 (7th)
Kitt faced batters #9-3 (8th)
Helsley in the 9thOli seems focused on having our best vs their best, regardless of which inning they come up. Kitt and GG seem swappable vs the top half, and JoJo gets the bottom of the order, whichever inning it bats, was Oli’s approach yesterday.
I don’t think Oli is ridged enough to say this is my sixth, seventh and eighth inning guy every game. We can see how it plays out going forward, but I do like the flexibility he is showing in his pen usage during holds and saves.
Hated missing yesterday’s victory, but I had not one, but two weddings to attend. As long as I’m not the one saying “I do”, I just love going to weddings. The food…..the booze……the pretty ladies……talking sports with the guys…..what a great time. The only thing I dislike about weddings is getting badgered to hit the dance floor by my significant other…..whomever that might be at the time. They all know that I don’t do the dance thing, but put a little liquor in them and……sorry didn’t mean to ramble…back to baseball…….what’s for din-din tonight one may ask? I’ll be ordering a Reuben sandwich with extra 1000 Island dressing and cole slaw from Erin’s Snug Pub. Then I’ll drift on by the ole’ drive thru lane at Popeye’s and snag myself not one…..not two…..but 3 of their wondrous apple cinnamon pies. Today’s game vs Miami is going to be a bear to win……even with Gibson dealing. I look for a high scoring contentious ballgame that hopefully our boys can find a way to come out on top in. My heart is calling this game 8-7 Birds, but my head is agonizingly screaming out 10-7 Miami.
And thanks for the Swanson turkey tv dinner suggestion, Rat. So basic, but oh so wonderful. Especially the mashed potatoes in those dinners…..surprisingly scrumptious.

1TD talked about the two great Hall of Fame sluggers who wore 44. I met Willie McCovey at a local show some 12-15 years ago and got his auotgraph. We shook hands and his hand was about like he was wearing his first baseman’s mitt, engulfing my hand. Great guy.
A cool “stat” is the 1963 co-home run leaders were both #44’s, with 44 home runs.
As for current affairs, I get the sense Miami wins their first game of the season today. They can’t keep losing day in and day out, and while we are off to a decent start we are no powerhouse.

What would you do?Yeah, Bikemike, today he’d be nothing unusual, but back then Willie McCovey was a giant of a man who towered over most all other mortal baseball players. If you were attending a game, you really noticed how big he was when he was standing in the box. Another guy that I recall who dwarfed other players when he was on the field of play came along a bit after McCovey. I’m sure a lot of you remember J.R. Richard. He was incredibly imposing when he stood on the pitcher’s mound and worked to the plate. Nowadays, almost all these guys seem to take on the look of Goliath…Haha!
