This season is not 75% on the manager. The players still play the game so they have the most responsibility for how the season ends up, but that is the same with every team. The manager IS responsible for putting the players in the best situation to them to succeed and, most importantly, for the team to succeed.

I have my issues with MM and think it is time for a change but he is not clueless. Maybe stubborn? I still don’t understand how Fowler plays CF over other players whose metrics show they are better in CF. He should be in LF.

If we trade CMart, aim for Arenado, Trout or Freeman.

Yes. He will NOT be available to pitch in the postseason since he was acquired after August 31.

You can believe whatever you want. I have provided my data supporting my position. Most of the time, you have tried to redirect what I am saying without providing many facts. Good luck.

Any person can manage when all the players do the job they were hired to do. A good manager is the person who puts the team in the BEST POSITION to win when when everything is not perfect.

The Giants on Offense are younger than only 4 teams on an AB weighted basis and are next to last in runs per game (3.91). The Giants have 1 pitcher who has thrown more than 60 innings with an ERA below 4.30. They have 2 above 5.40 and 2 more above 4.50. They have allowed (4.89) nearly 1/4 run/game more than league average. By contrast, the Cardinals have allowed (4.35) over 1/4 run/game less than league average.

Even good managers will make decisions that won’t be agreed with. I think Madden is still good. I think Bochy is still good, he just has no pitching and no hitting to work with.

Let’s rephrase it. He costs us 4-5 more games than good managers.

I thought our manager did that.

    There’s the difference, I don’t.

I am not talking about this game. This is a much deeper discussion that has been going on for awhile. No matter what you want to say, I see some repeating moves that I question from Matheny. I truly believe he costs the team a minimum of 4-5 games a year with his decision making.

I am not worried about Pham producing at a high level. He showed he could do this in the minors. The only concerns about him are whether his eyesight stays under control and that he stays healthy. He also needs to be playing CF before Fowler or Grichuk.

I think Wong has learned a lot this season and may not replicate the same numbers but should be close.

I do have concerns whether DeJong will be able to produce like he has this year. I think he could do this eventually but I am worried about a “sophomore slump”.

Gyorko needs to return to super sub.

IMO, we could upgrade at 3B, SS, 1B or OF. Grichuk needs to go. We can afford to trade 1 of Wong, DeJong and Gyorko. We can trade Carpenter for an upgrade. SS needs to be someone like Andrelton Simmons. Bruce would not be a good signing. He does not upgrade what we have very much. We need a MAJOR upgrade if we acquire anyone in the OF.

wagee, I would consider it for Trout or Arenado. Maybe Freeman. Not sure if I would for very much more.

Too bad our low ranked prospect one trick pony struck out twice with runners on base. I’m sure next time he will hit a grand slam in the same situation.

I hope it is Grichuk. I don’t see him ever being able to keep from striking out so much.

I could see us eating about $15 million over the remainder of the contract, including buyout. Any more than that and I don’t know that it is too wise. That would be about $12 million a year for Leake by the Mariners. That is a fair deal for him.

Looks like the low prospect ranked one position pony has 4 RBIs tonight to help the Cards get off to a good start on this road trip.
Maybe the Cards knew something when they moved Carp to 3B to make room for him.

He hits a slow roller to SS that the Brewers can’t turn a DP on combined with a gutsy play by Fowler to score from second. That doesn’t sound like a great hitting skill to get 2 RBIs. He came into the game hitting .227 with RISP.

He MIGHT turn out to be a good hitter for a few years but it is far from a given.

    Good for him, though.

    1. the comparisons of players who didn’t do much better than our present guys but matured into big bats at the MLB level must have fallen on ears unwilling to listen.
    2. And the stats I gave of Taveras his last 2 years must have hit a wall with you.
    3. Plus his weaknesses on defense, that were causing the Cardinal to entertain offers. You’re right, discontinuing the conversation is probably in your best interest.

    1. You are the only one around here who refuses to listen to counter points.
    2. This is yet another example of how you like to talk like you are superior to other posters.
    3. Yet another example of trying to talk down to a poster.

I could have come back with facts/arguments which would support my point of view but why waste my time talking with a rock. Enjoy your Clydesdale.

BC, you say McCutchen is a big bat and cite his minor league numbers. You then basically write off Taveras because his “numbers went downhill”. Despite Taveras hitting 23 home runs in AA, which is more than McCutchen hit any 1 year until his 3rd year in the majors?

I think the best thing I can do is not continue any more in this ridiculous discussion.

From inside the organization, Reyes, Alcantara or Tui. I am having a hard time seeing the Cardinals signing a free agent closer. I think they will go trade route only if they can get it cheap. Too much internal talent.

Tough game for Rich Hill tonight. No-hits the Pirates for 9 innings and gives up a walk-off home run to Harrison in the 10th. Takes the 1-0 loss.

Offer him 2 years, $9.25 million with an option for a 3 year at $9.00 million with a $1 million buyout. We basically give him the maximum salary cut for the next 2 years but he gets to rehab and regain value before hitting free agency. He probably won’t get any more than that from anyone else.

The plus side is that his walk rate is at 5.9% since July 1, although he is at just under 31% K rate in that time frame. 😉

Euro, you said in your post that Herzog said his Kansas City teams were a little better but Sutter was the reason he won a WS with the Cardinals. He certainly didn’t have the same quality closer with Kansas City as he did with the Cardinals.

I am reinforcing the point that he had a better closer with the Cardinals. I have never argued that Sutter was not a good closer.
