Looking at Derek Shore’s list made me wonder why Seattle gave up on O’Neill. (Not trying to influence votes as O’Neill has already been selected). Anybody else still wonder that?
Desparate times call for desperate messures CC. Seattle lost every starting pitcher to injury and were using Cardinal reject Sam Gaviglio in their rotation. They had to do something to save their season, so they turned to an organization full of pitching prospects. New GM Mike Girsch absolutely robbed the Mariners on this deal.
Bader #5.position guy usually gets my pick if its close between the two.I think a guy who plays most every day can have more effect on a game than a guy who pitches once every 5 or 6th day.
Bader wins the vote for #5 at 6 votes to 4 for Hudson and 1 for Sierra.
Voting is now open for #6-10. These will be weighted so put them in the order you think is accurate. Also, please list reasons on some of the newly talked about players. I, for one, haven’t decided where to slot Delvin Perez or Jordan Hicks in at yet. Any ideas on those two?

10 – Edmundo SosaPads, glad you mentioned Perez as I have him next up on my list. I usually slant my rankings to guys closer to the majors but I’m going with Perez here as he’s a talent that the Cards typically don’t have the opportunity to draft due to all the winning seasons leaving us at the back half of the draft. Perez was a top 10 draft pick (some thought top 5) prior to his issue with PEDs, the Cardinals haven’t had someone of that caliber since JD Drew.
Defensively everything I’ve heard is that he’ll be a plus MLB glove at SS. The bat is the thing that needs to come around. However the kid is still only 18 and is listed at 6′ 3” and 175 lbs. He has a lot of time to work on that hit tool for a plus defender.

7. Sierra – A breath away from a starting position for STL. He might push Fowler out of his way.
8. Alcantara – Some believe that he’ll have it all very soon.
9. Gallen – Blew through PB right up to SPRF in June. Brought his SPRF ERA and WHIP down at AAA MEM.
10.Knizner – IMO took the largest leap forward in the organization.6. Knizner — I know I’ve said it 100 times but catchers are underrated in prospect lists. I think he’s getting knocked a bit because he hasn’t done the afl yet and has a couple pretty good guys in front of him… You just dont find good defensive catchers that can hit and this ranking reflects that.
7. Alcantara – he might end up our closer next year.
8. Gallen — he dominated the acc. He has pitched well all the way up the system.
9. Gomber — he wont make this five probably and that’s fine. After his first ugly start he pretty much just had another ho hum year.
10. Arozarena — I think he’s the best of the next three guys who can play center.
Guys I left out and why :
Sierra — think he’s the worst of the three cf prospects in this area. Arozarena hits. Mercado seems to be the full package.
Hudson — k rates are scary… Great stuff but…
Perez — show me the talent. He bombed this year.
Ja garcia — doesnt play premium position and one year can’t jump him higher for me.
Adolis Garcia can play CF and he has a cannon for an arm with 17 assists. It is telling though that Memphis has been playing Tyler O’Neill in CF rather than Garcia in the playoffs. Sierra was playing CF before them both though.
My swag as to the CF depth chart is Bader >> Sierra >> O’Neill >> Garcia with Mercado and Arozarena in AA.
One thing I do like about virtually all of these guys on the position player side (including the catchers) is they range from defensively good to strong
Bader might be the weakest one defensively and he aint bad.
Ja garcia won’t stick in center. Berkman played center at one point too… He couldnt play it like sierra can.
Garcia would play center like grichuk played center. There is a difference even though I have pointed out multiple times that grichuk wasnt horrible. If he had hit he might have been great out there.
So yeah… You probably have a point. Im not sure if it changes my list though. I will ponder.
I will go for Hudson for #5. I like Bader but have trouble seeing him as an all-star. Hudson has #1 stuff, great breaking pitch and lots of heat. Still learning to pitch but after a so-so start at AAA seems to be of top of it with a great start in the League Championship series.
#6 Hudson – k rate is puzzling but stuff and effectiveness is there
#7 Alcantara – strong finish at AA
#8 Sierra
#9 Gallen – advanced quickly this year, does not appear to be more than a back of the rotation stuff, but was extremely effective

SoonerinNC, we’ve already concluded Round 5 and are now voting picks 6 – 10. Bader got the 5th spot.
Part of the reason that JA Garcia isn’t playing CF is that he is a very good RF. He has a great arm so it is more of a situation where he is the best RF and others are very good CFs, as well, but not as good as he is in RF.
#6 Dakota Hudson. Tall, 6’5 strapping righthander. Plus fastball, wipe-out slider. Developing 6-12 curve that gets swings and misses. Not afraid to throw an occasional changeup.
#7 J Adolis Garcia This is a five tool player. Could have been ranked higher.
#8 Sandy Alcantara Plus, plus fastball with movement. Agree that he might be our closer at some time next year.
#9 Austin Gomber Has plenty of upside, IMO.
#10 Andrew Knizner Keeping my fingers crossed. A lot of people are open to trading Kelly because of this player.
