From Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY:
The #Stlcards are moving close to trading starter Mike Leake
August 30, 2017 at 10:25 am #31947From Ken Rosenthal:
#Mariners getting Mike Leake, sources tell The Athletic. First to report #STLCards were moving him: @BNightengale. About $55M left on deal.
August 30, 2017 at 10:25 am #31948Say WHAT?
WOULD be awesome if it happened but not holding my breath
August 30, 2017 at 10:26 am #31949How much money would the Cards have to eat before a trade was not awesome?
August 30, 2017 at 10:36 am #31951Will be interesting to see how much $$ the Cards cover and what exactly they get back, if they cover next to no salary at best all i see coming back is a PTBNl
August 30, 2017 at 10:41 am #31952I doubt the Cards are going to get out from under his contract without paying some of the $55 MM remaining.
August 30, 2017 at 10:45 am #31954Any news on what the Cards are getting in return?
August 30, 2017 at 10:49 am #31955I could see us eating about $15 million over the remainder of the contract, including buyout. Any more than that and I don’t know that it is too wise. That would be about $12 million a year for Leake by the Mariners. That is a fair deal for him.
August 30, 2017 at 10:52 am #31956Wow. Not sure how to read this. Is it throwing in the towel, or simply making room for better options and getting out from at least part of a bad contract? Definitely the latter is true, and because Leake has been so bad since May we are not really losing much. His last start was better, but he has not been anywhere near the pitcher we had hoped he would be. He has not been “Kip Wells” bad, but he has been mostly bad.
I mentioned before that I think Leake could work out as a good bullpen guy in ’18, but am fine with the club pursing a deal. That was a tough contract to take from the get-go, as I had hoped back then that we would have worked harder at retaining Lackey.
For this off season, I hope management works hard at retaining Lynn.
August 30, 2017 at 10:58 am #31957NOthing so far on how much they are covering or what we getting back
August 30, 2017 at 10:58 am #31958Which veteran is next?
Grichuk?
Pham?
Piscotty?
Carpenter?
Fowler ? I can hope he is next.Followed by Carpenter.August 30, 2017 at 11:04 am #31960Jenifer LangoschVerified account @LangoschMLB 1m1 minute ago

#STLCards traded Leake and $750,000 of international cap space to #Mariners for minor league shortstop Rayder Ascanio.August 30, 2017 at 11:05 am #31961I hope it is Grichuk. I don’t see him ever being able to keep from striking out so much.
August 30, 2017 at 11:05 am #31962and some cash to, hope it inst much as Ascanio looks like a waste of time just looking at his minor league #’s
August 30, 2017 at 11:17 am #31964The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have acquired minor league shortstop Rayder Ascanio from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mike Leake and international cap space totaling $750,000 for the current international signing period.
This is from the team so the amount of Leake’s salary covered by the Cards is not yet clear.
August 30, 2017 at 11:22 am #31966One other advantage is a 40 man roster spot. Howeverif they use it on bringing up Flaherty there is no real roster spot gain since Flaherty would not require protection this Winter otherwise.
August 30, 2017 at 11:28 am #31967Would this indicate that we are leaning towards re-signing Lynn?
Feels like it to me
Leake leaving clears money
It also clears a spot for a youngster tooI’m kind of shocked this deal actually happened
Thanks Leake! Even with the ups and downs I was happy he was a Cardinal!

ParticipantSorry to say, but Leake was a bad signing from the get go.
He didn’t fit here on several levels. Mo should have know this.August 30, 2017 at 12:09 pm #31970Ken Rosenthal says the Cards will eat $17 MM of the $55 MM still due to Leake.
August 30, 2017 at 12:26 pm #31972It was disheartening to think that Leake was going to be around for 3 more years past this year. It feels like the season is just getting started.

ParticipantGreat trade. Thank you Mo!
August 30, 2017 at 12:33 pm #31976My initial take on the short and long-term implications of the Leake trade.

August 30, 2017 at 12:52 pm #31982Not sure why the trade for a nobody from how it sounds unless there’s more to come…
August 30, 2017 at 12:55 pm #31983So likely $2.0M this year (he’s owed about $2.5M) and then $5.0M per year for the next three years.
August 30, 2017 at 12:57 pm #31984Brian, in your article, you said rookies Weaver and Reyes, but wouldn’t Weaver have exhausted his rookie eligibility this year?
