Well, first impressions don’t a season make, but our Cards weren’t looking great today.
Starting pitching: bad
Offense: needs work
Defense: average
Bullpen: not bad
Hustle: goodLet’s hope Thompson can put this train back on the tracks tomorrow.
As much as I like Goldy (IMO the best player on the team), I don’t care about future HOF consideration or what uniform he might wear. Will he and ‘Nado be able to send us deep into the playoffs in 2024? If so, give him a generous 1-year contract for 2025, but keep the door open to a younger, productive replacement. It’s about winning, not about who gets a red jacket or into the HOF. Same goes for Arenado when his time comes. 2022 was our best chance to go far, but they blew it. Cardinals need to have a “what have you done for me lately” attitude instead of hanging on to relics.
Overall positive move for the Cards, but it’s another thirty-something pitcher on the back end of their career. He needs to stay healthy and have motivation to win for this to work out. Optimistic for next year, but beyond that, the risks increase dramatically. Mikolas is not spring chicken either. I’d like to see MO’s strategic plan to shore up the rotation for the next five years. Not sure that exists.
As I recall, Lynn thought he was a $20M per year pitcher when he left, but only banked $12M. Now he’s older and slower and at $10M, down from $18M w/LA for a year. With inflation, maybe that’s a good deal for a one year gap filler, but it’s still risky. Older veteran pitcher acquisitions never seem to work well for us, and this one doesn’t seem to move the needle much. Lynn has been overrated his whole career IMHO.

4-0 already in the first. Not what what we wanted, but about what I expected. Adam should have the self respect to take himself out of the game because he obviously can’t get anybody out. How long have we been saying that? Keeping him in there is disgraceful – to him, the team and the fans.
It seems more and more like last year was our sweet spot w/Arenado and Goldy. May not get to that level of performance again. So, to answer Rats’ question in the other thread, yes, we’ve most likely squandered Arenado’s and Goldy’s best years.
Couldn’t even scratch out a run today. Hate to say it, but even the entertainment value of these games is low right now. Agree with the comments about the game being sterilized. 1TD- good story on Drysdale and Gibson! Not sure we’ll ever see anything like that again.
On a different note, it looks Like our reigning MVP has given up at the plate lately. Seems like more than just a typical slump.

Wow, 6-0 in the 2nd. When is anyone (Cards management) going to admit that Waino can’t get anyone out any more? I think the 200 win scenario is a pipe dream at this point. Glad I didn’t buy a ticket for this one.
Agree with 1TD, glad to see Flaherty gone. But once again, Mo is betting on the future, just wish we had gotten more for him. But that tells me his value is only what the market will demand, and that wasn’t much. Other teams probably evaluated his injury history and surly attitude and decided he wasn’t worth a high cost.
It’s a start, but not much more. Prospects are always a risk, but at least they’re out to prove something, so should have the motivation. Unlike many free agents just looking for their next paycheck, which we’ve suffered through in the recent past.
For some reason, I just can’t get excited about “good baseball” when the cubs are on the field. Even though they do play pretty good baseball at times, they have always seemed to me to be arrogant and unprofessional, treat opposing teams poorly (in part by tolerating unsportsmanlike conduct among their fans), and never seemed to be gracious winners or losers. Might just be me, but that’s been my impression for a long time.
1TD, are you saying Chip Carey = Cubs fan? Just sayin’! He did seem pretty pepped up about that ending.
Goldy, Gorman, Arenado 1-for-12 tonight. TV announcers calling it a great game…it was actually a terrible game offensively for our team. But, par for the course this year.
Missed the first inning action, but from what I’ve read here and heard from the game commentary, good on Mikolas and bad on the 2nd base ump. Hope it ignites our offense. Should have been a warning to Mikolas first, doesn’t sound like that happened.
1TD, looks like he was signed by the Phillies in 2016, so he must have done a few years in the minors. I didn’t do deep research, but agree it’s odd to be pitching at the major league level for three years without a decision or save. His best numbers are by far with the Cardinals, so maybe he’s found a home here?
