In his chat today, Derrick Goold said the Cardinals plan to approach Goldschmidt during the offseason about a contract extension covering 2025 and the rest of his career. Do you agree or disagree with that intent? What would be good terms for a two or three-year deal for his ages 37-38-39 years?

    Extension? No thanks.
Q-offer? If he deserves it. One year at a time.

It is the Cardinal Way. Their brand. Honor the greats. Treat them like heroes. Be a great supportive city. Embrace the Hall of Famers or near Hall of Famers who pass through.

I can see this on one side as being great for attracting great players to St Louis. They want to have a home where they are honored. But on the other hand, extending Goldschmidt likely blocks players who could potentially replace him with similar production for far cheaper costs. Similar production is a big question mark but I’m assuming Goldschmidt’s aging curve catches up to him at the same time that guys like Baker or Burleson are reaching their prime years.

So it’s probably bad in the short run, bad in the mid run, but potentially good in the long run as it reinforces our brand.

Goldschmidt is my favorite Cardinal of recent years so I would like to see him finish his career here but the reality is we need to stop doing the red jacket heritage deals that we did with Carpenter, Yadi, and Waino. If Goldy has a productive 2024 then extend him but not before then.

Besides, with the way Gray’s contract is so backloaded I don’t know if we can afford Gray, Goldy, and Arenado beyond 2024.

Right now Goldschmidt and Torre hold the distinction of being the only former Cardinal MVP’s to have not won a WS Championship in a Redbird uniform. Torre was a Cardinal for 6 seasons and Goldschmidt will match those 6 seasons if he isn’t traded in ’24. At any rate, I don’t think it’s a good idea to extend Goldschmidt and if he is indeed extended, I hope it doesn’t go beyond ’25.

I have to think that WDWII is behind this idea.

This is not what I thought would happen. I thought Goldschmidt would leave after his contract ran out in order to loosen the budget, and I thought Arenado would get traded in the 2024-2025 offseason, also to loosen the budget. I thought Walker would move to 1B, and Gorman would move to 3B, and Saggese would take over 2B. With a Goldschmidt extension we would have 3 additional years to win the World Series with Goldschmidt at 1B. It also means that Walker is an outfielder for the foreseeable future and Saggesse is trade bait. With Goldschmidt around to stretch out and catch those hurried throws from Arenado, Arenado could very well win more Gold Gloves. This really stabilizes the outlook for the Cardinals for the next five years. I like this a lot.

13 seasons, 8 in ARI, 5 in STL. Bill needs 3 more seasons to possibly nab that HOF hat. He knows he has Arenados.

Adam finished on three 1yr contracts.

I don’t know. The fan that loves the player says yea. But the fan in me that wants to win a world series says wait a doggone minute. We did this with carpenter and we regretted it. He went down a little last year, whose to say he won’t regress this season. I say wait until the season is over. I guess maybe he is a free agent after that and he could leave and that would be on him. I just think it’s better to see what you might get for money spent.

Goldschmidt isn’t even a career long Cardinal. This FO and apparently some of the commenters here, forgot how bad Waino was this year and how bad Matt Carpenter and even Molina, to an extent, was after being given legacy extensions/contracts. If we want to even sniff a WS title handing out feel good contracts to guys in the MLB nursing home isn’t the way. I want to scream.

One of the negatives is that the Cardinals would be limited on how much the salary can go down from year to year. Therefore, he will be close to his current salary for the extension. I’m not sure he will be worth that much in 3 years. Based on current players and expiring contacts, he does fit in the salary structure.

What’s the downside of waiting a year, see what kind of season he has in 2024, and structure an offer accordingly?

I don’t think they should but I think they will.

It might work out ok but more than likely it’ll lead to another ugly goodbye season…

I agree. It’s the same situation with Molina in 2018, Carpenter in 2019, and Mikolas in 2023. There was no reason to sign these guys to an extension early on. We aren’t getting a discount and taking on all the risk.

To whatever extent it keeps Walker in RF. I am against extending Goldy.

He has to be straddling the fence in regards to if he lands in Cooperstown one day. I think how he finishes his career will be the deciding factor. Would love seeing him go in as a Cardinal vs a Diamondback. If we trade him this year and he does make it in the HoF, he’d probably opt to go in as a Diamondback. When Goldy does leave us one day, I think I’ll miss his glove more than his bat……heck, come to think if it, how does Goldy not make it to the HoF? So rare to possess such a thundering bat coupled with a perennial golden glove. Sign the man through ’25, then I think he’ll willingly ride off into the sunset as a Cardinal for life.

Pugs- respectfully im tired of our FO and especially fans worried about who will be wearing a red jacket or in cooperstown. The goal should simply be winning.

No problem with those thoughts…..you’ve always been cool, Gray. How about Goldy wins a world series and makes it to Cooperstown…..both in Cardinal red.

If the Cardinals extend him at the age of 36 and after a significant decline they should just open up a damn nursing home and sign every old declining veteran they can find and we’ll call them the Nursing Home Cardinals.

Two of these are not like the other two, but yes, the Cards need to be smarter on these type deals. Pujols surprised me on the positive side for a farewell deal. Like Pugs said, it’s easy to forget how much Goldy’s glove brings. In 2022, I would’ve watched the Cards just to see the infield play defense. Or maybe that was 2021, or both years.

Regardless, any deal made needs to be consistent with an honest projection of Goldy’s baseball performance going forward and projections get more accurate the longer you wait.

Personally I would have been working to deal Goldy and Nolan Sr this off season in an effort to make the club, younger, more athletic and more pitching rich.

But management is kicking the can down the road hoping for better clubhouse chemistry, and veteran leadership getting them to a post season berth. Maybe it will work, who knows.

I like the way jnevel put it. The Cardinal brand is to take care of the stars and let them play their latter years as a Redbird. That is often not the sound baseball move, but rather more emotional. However, the intangible legacy that resonates with the fan base and other players has some value.

Goldschmidt was league MVP one year ago. Having veterans on a roster has always been considered an important factor in building a roster. Goldschmidt hardly ever sits out with an injury. This move stabilizes the entire big league roster and brings clarity to what happens in the upper levels of the minors, IMO.

    Bottom line is this:

    1) If the Cardinals are in contention next year at the trade deadline he will stay.

    2) If the Cardinals are not in contention next year at the trade deadline he will be dealt.

    3) If he stays (see #1 above) and he has had a good year he will get an extension.

    4) If he stays (see #1 above) and has another so-so year he will not get an extension.
