1TD: I missed a lot of the 80s. working in unpleasant places with no access to television. The 60s were my first happy days. starting with that marvelous 1964 run to the top.
Let’s hope it is only a physical issue with Gorman, and he was not notified this morning that he is being sent to another ball club.
I’ll take a page out of Rats’ book here and say that the last time I recall the Cubs sweeping the Cardinals in four straight was in an APBA league I put together in the ‘80s. I had leagues comprised of a great team for each franchise. The National league representatives for the Cardinals and Cubs were the 1934 Gas Housers and 1929 powerhouse we mentioned earlier.
That ‘29 Cub team lead my National League pennant race most of the year, and a late season four game set brought them in St. Louis to face a Cardinal team that had stumbled early, but were playing well and had reached to within four games of the top. A Cardinal sweep would put them in a tie, and I had the rotation set up so that Dizzy Dean would go in games one and four. Back then pitchers were durable enough to do that now and again. Paul would go in game two and Tex Carleton game three.
Alas, the Cubs dominated the Gas Housers, roughing up Diz in both of his starts and after the carnage was complete, the Gas House boys were 8 back and fading. They further faded down the stretch and finished around .500. The ‘29 Cubs won the pennant, with the 1927 Pirates second and the surprising 1915 Phillies third.
Matz’s control is not the greatest. Has touble hitting the black, so he’s missing a lot and catching too much plate sometimes.
I do like how Knizner handles himself behind the plate. Moreso than Contreras. But, like many catchers these days, he drops a knee andplants himself on his backside too much, even with runners aboard like here in the second. If the ball had gotten away with him planted like that, the runners would have had a field day.
Yeah, CardFrance, ’67 and ’68 put the hooks into me. I was still a real young boy in ’64. I can recall the big people gathered around the set going crazy, but that was a bit before my time until I became a veritable expert a few years later…Haha!
Gscottar’s not gonna like it…but Matz has sort of turned into what we’ve hoped he might be when we signed him. Might be end up a bargain, yet another Mo swindle on the market?? 😂
Kniz doesn’t have too much experience legging into second after shooting a rocket off the top of the wall. It didn’t work out this time, but I have no doubt it will next time. He looks good at plate these days. We might be seeing a player forcing something good to happen to him.
Bikemike alluded to pitchers being a bit more durable in 1929…Well, on June 9th of ’68 Steve Carlton was the SP’er in the first game of a doubleheader against the Reds at Crosley Field. He was touched up for 7 ER’s and only lasted 3.2 innings in that first game, but received a no decision after the Redbirds came back to win by a final score of 10-8. In the second game of that doubleheader, the Cardinals jumped out to an early 4th inning 6-0 lead only to have the Reds come roaring back to tie it at 6-6. Once again, manager Red Schoendienst handed the baseball to Steve Carlton who this time came on to work out of the BP in relief in the home half of the 10th inning and pitched 2.2 innings before surrenduring a walk-off RBI double to Leo Cardenas that pushed across Tony Perez for the winning run and tagged Carlton as the losing pitcher of decision in that second game…Haha! That entire double header was broadcast on television and I watched it with my dad and younger brother on that day of June 9th which was my dad’s birthday…

Hey if he keeps this up I will be thrilled. Kudos to him for stepping up and staking a claim to the 2024 rotation. He has looked like a different pitcher since his demotion to the pen and promotion back to being a starter.
I’m not too sure about Matz. Someone mentioned the other day that almost anyone can perform when it doesn’t matter. I can still routinely bury 8 of 10 free throws during a drill, but the charity stripe ain’t no bargain when down by 2 with 3 seconds on the clock.

A while ago I was saying I don’t care what somebody looks like now, what did they do the first third of the season? Say through the end of May or early June. There was something to play for then. There was presure to win. There are some guys people are gushing about now who really stunk it up back when it mattered. They will be front and center next year and there will be a lot of presure to not let this year happen again.
Kind of thought we would sneak away with one, although thought the score would be more along the lines of 8-1. I guess with “Purple Haze” Hendricks going though, should have known we would not do much.
Wow, that 1968 doubleheader 1TD alluded to was certainly atypical of a ‘68 game. But the Reds were one team that could really hit in ‘68. They were showing a hint of what they would become over the next decade.
