I appreciate Jack’s work as a Cardinal. He was real good before the shoulder issues. I will root for him as an Orange-and-Black birds as well, and hope he gets to pitch deep into the post season with the Orioles.
I’m not sure Jack’s what could be termed a “head case.” In my view, he’s simply a mope who seems like an incredibly unhappy young man. That’s not anything that’s highly unheard of in any group of 10 to 15 people.
Jack’s not an exuberant guy, but not knowing him who knows about his personality. Didn’t he come from a single parent home? I think he came from a bit of a disadvantaged childhood and has done well. I remember 2019 when he really came on and pitched us to the post season, especially the big division clincher against the arch-rival Cubs.
Sincerely hope he pitches well down the stretch in Baltimore.
Haha!…Yeah, Bikemike. If we can just get a guy named Manny over the winter, it’s my view that there’s a decent chance that this team’s fortunes can be turned around! Pitcher or position player…It doesn’t make any difference. And I don’t care if he’s on the top step of an American Legion dugout…If there’s a manager anywhere in the world named Manny, that guy needs to be on the top step of the Redbird dugout in ’24…
Not sure if its been mentioned, we also got a 19 year old RHP in rookie level. Zack Showalter.
Also Pieto slots in at #9 prospect in our system.
I’d guess that has a lot to do with his demeanor, Bikemike. The fact that he didn’t have any relationship with a father has probably led him to the conclusion that he’s been cheated. I can’t really fault him if that’s the case.
It’s about as good a deal we could hope for at this point. Flaherty is still a big question mark, not going to get top picks for him.
I don’t know about you guys, but I think we royally fleeced Baltimore in this deal. The crowned jewel being this Showalter kid. As far as least favorite Cardinals, I really cannot think of one. Off the top of my head, Cardinals who were a bit controversial or had some sort of a bad rap were Tommy Pham, Flaherty, George Hendrick, Dick Allen…..wow that’s about all that come to mind at the moment.
All in all, the Cards did fairly well at the deadline, considering the constraints. They got a bunch of 40, 45 and 50 FV prospects, which should bring at least some major league players. Whether they’ll turn out to be good ones will be anyone’s guess.
Per MLB.com, the Cards picked up their number 4, 6, 8, 9, 22, 23 and 26 prospects here. If they’d played out the season, they might have had one of that list after the draft next year. If they hit on one or two starting players and a bench or bullpen arm it will be a net positive deadline.
If they were fairly certain that they had little chance of retaining Flaherty’s services during the free agency period, it is hard to fault them for dealing him. Of course the follow on question is ‘who is gonna be in your starting rotation next year’.
Least favorite Card would be that Fowler fellow a few years agoAgree with 1TD, glad to see Flaherty gone. But once again, Mo is betting on the future, just wish we had gotten more for him. But that tells me his value is only what the market will demand, and that wasn’t much. Other teams probably evaluated his injury history and surly attitude and decided he wasn’t worth a high cost.
Jack has pitched well of late, but I don’t think his arm will hold up to it for long. There is just too much IL history. IIRC early on he was more of a jerk than a mope. People change as they gain maturity. I wish him well, but I think he will continue to have trouble staying healthy.
We will just have to see what all these new guys look like bumped up a level and subjected to the philosophy. At least they are something new to look at.

Of all seven guys, only Robberse was in his old team’s top 10 and now, four of them jump into the Cards top 10? Feels really aggressive.
Also, remember that these MLB Pipeline rankings do not include any 2023 draft picks, which means some of these guys are artificially high, since all the prospects are not included.

Did they do a mid season rerank? I’m not sure, but maybe they reevaluated after the deadline. I’m not sure if any of those guys are properly ranked, yet it makes the point that the Cards did get some potential back, and traded away no one likely to be on the club in 2024..
