ParticipantOkay, Shady, should probably have included him too, although he’s rather one dimensional. Let’s also add him to the list.

ParticipantPretty deep at 2B – Gorman, Donovan,
Saggese, Prieto, Dunn, Wetherholt, etc. My guess is that Wetherholt and Winn will eventually settle in as the middle infield. Excited for that.bccran
ParticipantPham’s not a key to the Cardinals longer term future. Guys like Winn, Gorman, Walker, Nootbaar, Herrera/Pages, Scott, Wetherholt, etc. are. Now, if some pitchers like McGreevy, Graceffo, Hence, Roby, Robberse, etc. can surface, it will be a rosy future.

Participantbb and Albert –
I was astounded when I heard the Gray interview after his 4th poor showing in a row (before last night), when he said
that to be a really good player one needs to work very hard, and dedicate themselves to excellence. That he needs to get back to doing that, and that he knew how to do it. On top of that, I was sitting behind home plate in the Cardinals 1st game against the Rangers and watched Arenado make a very lack luster run to first base on a ground ball.Hope that answers your questions.
bccran
ParticipantArenado needs to get back to working hard and re-dedicating himself, like Gray said he was going to do. All the skills are still there for both of them.
The one piece to this puzzle that needs to come through is Walker.
His ceiling is higher than all the young guys.August 2, 2024 at 7:48 am in reply to: StL 2024 Game #110 thread – Thursday, August 1 at Cubs #262707bccran
ParticipantTough one. Even after the HR, it was up by 1 with no one on and 2 outs.
Then single, double, double. Ouch.bccran
ParticipantI was hoping for a keystone combination of Winn and Edman. That would have been special. If not that, then Winn and Saggese. But it looks like it’s going to be Winn and Wetherholt and that’s even more exciting.

ParticipantI really like the all around game that Winn brings to this ball club.
He’s going to be a fixture at SS for many years.bccran
ParticipantBurleson will probably move to DH in the future.

ParticipantBrian and Blake –
Thank you very much for your insights. Great stuff!
bccran
ParticipantJust hope he doesn’t punch out any of his own teammates.
bccran
ParticipantEdman was 0-5 tonight with 4 Ks.
I wonder what that means and how it affects things.bccran
ParticipantThanks very much, Brian.

ParticipantBrian –
Do we have a way of showing draftee signings?bccran
ParticipantBrian’s absolutely right. The ranking of a minor league system is subjective, and there are always good prospects that other teams will find attractive. The Cardinals probably have 12-15 easily. Guys like Saggese, Prieto, Thompson, Roby, Hence, Kloffenstein, Robberse, Antico, Bernal, Crooks, Baker, Fermin, Scott, Bedell, Graceffo, McGreevey, Cho, Baez, etc.
bccran
ParticipantWhy trade players off the active roster? Plenty of talented minor leaguers to put forth in trade talks.

ParticipantAmazing that we’re still in the race for the Central when 4/5 of the middle of the order hasn’t performed.

ParticipantWalker
Donovan
Gorman
Noot

ParticipantSorry, I know Ted, but I was mixing him up with Matheny, who was from Ohio and played at U. of Michigan.
bccran
ParticipantApologies, BikeMike. Teddy did grow up in Michigan.
bccran
ParticipantSimmons was from Ohio. Went to the U. of Michigan.

ParticipantAll the pitchers drafted average more than a K per inning.
Holiday’s stats are especially nice. Struck out 128 in 113 innings while only walking 19. BAA of .199.bccran
ParticipantThey’ve done a pretty good job so far, with the financial limitations that they have. For instance, let’s look at the OPS of the position players drafted so far.
Wetherholt – 1.061 (8 HR in only 124 AB)
Campos – 1.071 (11 HR in 236 AB)
Kross – 1.076 (19 HR in 221 AB)
McGee – 1.070 (15 HR in 188 AB)
Madron – 1.046 (12 HR in 211 AB)That’s pretty strong.
bccran
ParticipantWetherholt and Scott, the former Mountaineers, can hopefully look forward to being teammates on the Cardinals in several years.
bccran
ParticipantIt will be interesting to see if drafting Wetherholt alters their trade strategy later this month. Does it make Gorman, Edman, Donovan, Saggese, Prieto, or Dunn more tradeable?
