From the right side – Goldy, Arenado,
Contreras, Walker, and Winn sure looked good on paper coming into the 2024 season.The Reds beat up Taillon pretty badly in his last outing. 6 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. OHopefully the Cards can do the same today.
Okay, Shady, should probably have included him too, although he’s rather one dimensional. Let’s also add him to the list.
Pretty deep at 2B – Gorman, Donovan,
Saggese, Prieto, Dunn, Wetherholt, etc. My guess is that Wetherholt and Winn will eventually settle in as the middle infield. Excited for that.Pham’s not a key to the Cardinals longer term future. Guys like Winn, Gorman, Walker, Nootbaar, Herrera/Pages, Scott, Wetherholt, etc. are. Now, if some pitchers like McGreevy, Graceffo, Hence, Roby, Robberse, etc. can surface, it will be a rosy future.

I was astounded when I heard the Gray interview after his 4th poor showing in a row (before last night), when he said
that to be a really good player one needs to work very hard, and dedicate themselves to excellence. That he needs to get back to doing that, and that he knew how to do it. On top of that, I was sitting behind home plate in the Cardinals 1st game against the Rangers and watched Arenado make a very lack luster run to first base on a ground ball.Hope that answers your questions.
Arenado needs to get back to working hard and re-dedicating himself, like Gray said he was going to do. All the skills are still there for both of them.
The one piece to this puzzle that needs to come through is Walker.
His ceiling is higher than all the young guys.Tough one. Even after the HR, it was up by 1 with no one on and 2 outs.
Then single, double, double. Ouch.I was hoping for a keystone combination of Winn and Edman. That would have been special. If not that, then Winn and Saggese. But it looks like it’s going to be Winn and Wetherholt and that’s even more exciting.
I really like the all around game that Winn brings to this ball club.

The ranking of a minor league system is subjective, and there are always good prospects that other teams will find attractive. The Cardinals probably have 12-15 easily. Guys like Saggese, Prieto, Thompson, Roby, Hence, Kloffenstein, Robberse, Antico, Bernal, Crooks, Baker, Fermin, Scott, Bedell, Graceffo, McGreevey, Cho, Baez, etc.
Why trade players off the active roster? Plenty of talented minor leaguers to put forth in trade talks.
