Leake will make $17 million next year and $16 million the following year. Just as Reyes, Weaver,
Flaherty, Gallen, Hudson, etc. are arriving, and we already have
Mayers, Gonzales and Gant here. Didn’t need Leake for a long term contract with a NTC.

Goes back to the philosophy that has worked for the Cardinals. Get to know the player first. Exceptions are Fowler and Leake, and I’ll bet they would grudgingly admit in private a certain degree of remorse over both of those signings.

Best to know what you’ve got in a number of areas with a player before commiting long term dollars.
You know your own home grown players the best.

Just heard the owner of the Cubs in a long interview on a sports talk show. He’s said that the business plan of most teams has changed and it’s now mainly build from within. Quality players are being extended by their own teams.
The ones that hit the FA market may have some unseen warts,

Monty was a Rodney Dangerfield in the Yankees system. It would be nice to see him get a chance here.

He’s another Rodney Dangerfield in our system.

He’s given up 66 hits in 84 innings and struck out 79. WHIP of 1.10.

Are there any realistic trade ideas?

Helsley goes 6 1/3 and gives up 1 hit. Having a rough year, though.
    ERA of 2.79 after having a 1.61
in 2016 at Peoria over 17 starts. Cards moving the 2015 4th round pick verrrrry slowly.

Settle eventually into your best 8 and go with it. I’m not sure that Piscotty sand Grichuck are the answer. They’ve really disappointed. Would like to see how Bader looks in a major league uniform. Over the Winter we pinned our hopes on youngsters Wong, Piscotty, Adams, Diaz, and Grichuck. That hasn’t worked up to expectations. Maybe we give it a shot now with DeJong, Voit, Wong, and Bader in the lineup everyday.

Too much depth of average players. The real question is, who can become an above average player if settled into a regular role? Gyorko seems to have met the challenge. DeJong at SS, as he accumulates more time at the position?
Wong? Voit? Have Grichuk and Piscotty been given enough time? Can Bader rise to the challenge? Should Kelly be given some time in LF at Memphis? He was drafted as a third baseman.

We just need to settle into a steady regular 8 on the field everyday, and stop the musical chairs.

IF – Gyorko, DeJong, Wong or Carp, and Voit?

OF – Fowler, Pham, and Bader?

Who are the sleepers in this class
besides Fuller, Benson, and Kruczynski? Maybe Walsh, Latham or
    or Saylor?

Coming through the minors, in almost 1,500 at bats –

    .315/.362/.559/.921

He’s a hitter. Just needed to stay healthy and be in the lineup every day.

Watching Voit vs. Grichuk. Luke is
calmer and more settled at the plate. Plus good plate discipline. Grichuk is all wiggle and motion.
Too anxious. Maybe Randal can learn something.

    Samson had unusual strength.

Seriously, I wonder if Robertson has to cut his long hair, how he’ll react. Might need some “getting used to”.

1.) The Fowler trade was to lock in a lead off batter so Carp could hit third and swing with power. That failure has really upset the applecart.

2.) Peralta was supposed to be the starting 3B, but he come back overweight and even slower than usual. Big disappointment, because Gyorko was supposed to be a very good, versatile #5 infielder.

3.) Diaz was supposed to be the answer at SS. Now we may have to go shopping to fill the gap until Perez is ready in a few years. DeJong is probably not the everyday answer at that position.

My quess is that they will try to see what they can get with a Wong/Lynn/Oh package.

The Cardinals have a “Cardinals Way” manual that includes appearance and dress codes at each level. For players below AA, it requires neatly trimmed hair and facial hair. Wonder how Robertson is going to look “shorn”.

Lynn and Oh for a proven major league SS? Throw in an attractive pitching prospect or two if necessary?

No place for Carp in the outfield, with Fowler, Grichuk, Piscotty, Pham, and Bader ready. I like Luke Voit, but if it’s Carp vs. Luke at
1B, I’ll take Carp for now. We never should have traded Adams. The move would have been to trade Carp and platoon Adams and Voit at 1B.

Last season was Bader’s first full season in the minors. A 5 month grind, playing almost everyday.
That takes some getting used to. We’ll see how the last part of the season goes for him this year, now that he knows what to expect and perhaps how to prepare for it.

Bader has 16 home runs in 300 at bats so far this year. How does that project to a full season?

Don’t think DeJong is a pro SS holding down the position as a regular.
