RBK
ParticipantHow can you look at all those defensive statistics and then say with a straight face that he plays “decent defense?”
Statistically, he’s among the worst defensive outfielders in baseball on a per-inning-played basis.
July 16, 2024 at 8:28 pm #260673RBK, so what’s your plan to not only make the playoffs” But actually, do something when when the Cardinals get there. Is Contreras’ defense at catcher clearly superior to Burleson’s in RF? IMO, Pages is superior to Contreras at handling pitchers and throwing out runners. Do you agree or not? Granted, Contreras deserves to be in the lineup. So does Burleson. Only one can DH. What would you do?
July 16, 2024 at 8:43 pm #260675Pages is superior to Contreras at handling pitchers and throwing out runners.
IMO, while Pages may be better, Contreras is good enough. So I don’t see Pages getting heavy use.
July 16, 2024 at 9:21 pm #260676Eddie is the only one that matters.
July 16, 2024 at 10:13 pm #260677Pages has appeared in 33 games thus far in his career and he’s done a nice job behind HP in those 33 games. However, in my view, it’s more than a little premature to proclaim that either his talent at throwing out would be base stealers or the handling pitchers is superior to an established catcher who’s played in over 900 Big League baseball games. I’ll also say that Contreras has always an exceptionally strong throwing arm and a reputation for being difficult to run on.
July 16, 2024 at 10:47 pm #260678It really makes no difference to me if Burleson is in RF, LF, 1B or DH. As long as his bat is in the Cardinals lineup.

stlcard25ParticipantIMO:
Walker
Nootbaar
Gorman
Donovan
Burleson
Edman
CarlsonAny of them would be available for the right price, IMO. It’s worth remembering that Burleson and Donovan were still in college at the age that Walker has been at the major league level and put but basically the same numbers over a full season. I still think that Walker’s talent wins out in time. Hopefully it’s in St Louis.

jj-cf-stlParticipantLast time you wanted to trade Gorman and Walker. This time it’s Noot. Are you really that insecure about Burleys playing time? Just the latest chapter / thread to clear playing time for Burly. Looks like it’s about to become a tradition here.
July 17, 2024 at 10:41 am #260704jcf, So, the Cardinals really need another productive, consistent starting pitcher for now, the playoffs and next season. Who would you prefer trading to get that type of starting pitcher? And Burly’s playing time seems pretty secure, for now, regardless of who’s on the current roster, don’t you think? Your assumption is incorrect.

ParticipantWhy trade players off the active roster? Plenty of talented minor leaguers to put forth in trade talks.
July 17, 2024 at 12:19 pm #260709RBK
ParticipantExtremely unlikely they’re looking to acquire a “productive, consistent starting pitcher” with multiple years of control at the trade deadline.

July 17, 2024 at 12:26 pm #260710Bccran our system is lowly rated and the top prospects are either pitchers who are hurt or position players who are not excelling in AAA.
July 17, 2024 at 1:11 pm #260712The relative ranking of any farm system is immaterial to an individual trade. Every one of the 30 systems (from top to bottom) has players desirable to other organizations. Every single one.
July 17, 2024 at 2:00 pm #260714Here is the question. Is this the team you want to go all in for? Me? No
July 17, 2024 at 2:17 pm #260715Buying can mean Montgomery or John Lester. We don’t have a spare gold glove starting center fielder at the moment, so . . .
July 17, 2024 at 2:27 pm #260717Every one of the 30 systems (from top to bottom) has players desirable to other organizations.
True. Some of them will be buyers, not just the Cardinals. The good stuff will go to whoever can make the best offer. That is where the strength and condition of the upper part of the prospect list matters.
July 17, 2024 at 2:29 pm #260718All organizations do not value all players similarly. If they simply used BA rankings or the like, no one would need professional scouts. One cannot paint a very uneven surface with a broad brush.
Getting to all that matters, the Cards have the player capital to include in trades if they want to make them. We have no idea if other teams will offer “more” or “less” for their targets, as it is all in the perceptions held by the selling organization.
July 17, 2024 at 8:22 pm #260744I would go with a lineup that has Contreras catching and Burly at DH most days, with Pages catching day-after-night games. Once Herrera is ready he can take the day-after-night games, assuming we only go with two receivers. Could be one will wear a different big league uniform in a couple of weeks.
July 17, 2024 at 8:35 pm #260745Mike, Herrera is already ready. He was activated and optioned to Memphis.
July 17, 2024 at 8:43 pm #260746bccran
ParticipantBrian’s absolutely right. The ranking of a minor league system is subjective, and there are always good prospects that other teams will find attractive. The Cardinals probably have 12-15 easily. Guys like Saggese, Prieto, Thompson, Roby, Hence, Kloffenstein, Robberse, Antico, Bernal, Crooks, Baker, Fermin, Scott, Bedell, Graceffo, McGreevey, Cho, Baez, etc.
July 18, 2024 at 12:08 pm #260787
jj-cf-stlParticipantHerrera may be setting one day short of his first service year 🙉
It will change soon, but bad timing for a demotion.
July 18, 2024 at 12:11 pm #260788
jj-cf-stlParticipantHe may be a day over too. He’s right there. Hard to know when mlb started the service clock. That solo series that was a week early was different.
July 18, 2024 at 1:55 pm #260797Bling, thank you for mentioning the
Herrera service clock. I’d wondered if he had to come up to be reinstated.July 18, 2024 at 1:59 pm #260799What is the deal with over promoting Burly? He’s not leaving the lineup, not that awful in the field, has a cannon on his shoulder.
Leave him in RF until Goldy isn’t here, then reevaluate! A playoff teams leader in RBI needs to just be left alone.
July 19, 2024 at 3:57 am #260829Not here to blast the FO, but… A very short time ago we had a GG 2d baseman; moved him to SS, necessary at the time. This allowed the Birds to take a utility player and fill the 2d base position. WOW another GG! “That worked so well, let’s put them both in the OF” Appears the lack of development of major league OFs has cost STL considerably. Both GGs got injured; one has not played for a good while. Who’s decision was that? Looks like the easy way out’ instead of how a top flight organization should plan. We’ve heard about the logjam at OF positions, where are they? We are developing SP,top of the line OF, strong bench, and contract mismanagement has created congestion at some of the other positions. Whether it’s the draft, the development,or contract decisions, it seems that we are resigned to mediocrity for a while. What is wrong with looking at how the successful teams are building their foundations? The Brewers do it with a smallef market; the Braves do it with development, the Astros who knows. The big market teams just throw $$$$ and go get what they need. When was the last time the Dodgers were cinsidered middlie of the road? They all have a plan. Do the Cardinals actually have a plan?
