I like the move for Pham. RH bat who can still rake.

    Vs Lefties

    Pham .848 OPS
    Noot .620 OPS
    Burly .509 OPS
    Donny .619 OPS

Solid pickup who should really help against lefties. Nicely done, Mo.

I am hoping Pham is our Cesar Cedeno circa 1985.

Pham was the guy that gave us a lot of negative drama.

If he can rake against LH pitching then that is what matters at the moment.

I don’t remember a lot of negative drama. I remember an interview in which h dropped lots of F-Bombs which may have ticked off the organization.

But between the lines, he plays hard, gives 110%, and absolutely rakes against lefties.

He was quite public with his discontent for the Cardinals on the way out.

But he has played for a lot of bad organizations since then, and I am sure he has learned the grass is not always greener.

Even with Pham’s much needed RH bat against lefties. Despite the stats, I believe Burleson still stays in the lineup against starting LHP, for now. Maybe a little lower in the lineup against a LHP starter. It’s kind of like Joe Buck said, to paraphrase, Burleson is “must see” when he bats.

Yes, a .190/.219/.290/.509 slash line against LHP with a 43 wRC+ is definitely “must see.”

Just hope he doesn’t punch out any of his own teammates.

    Jay Jaffee, Fangraphs, on Pham:

Dreadful defense (-13 DRS, -6 FRV, and -2.5 UZR, all in 570.2 innings spread across the three outfield positions) has offset the modest value of his offense. He’s got no business in center field,

Picked that from gscottar’s comment on the Edman thread. I think from the PD.

Yeah I don’t think they are bringing him in to be a gold glover. His job is to mash LH pitchers.

Yep, he will be here to hit against lefties and provide clubhouse spark. Pham plays with a passion and that might be part of what management likes along with the righty bat.

Really too bad Carlson never improved after 2021. He looked to be on his way, and possibly this Spring he seemed ready to break out. The injury really set him back. For his sake he needs a fresh start somewhere where he can get consistent reps and try to become the next Arozarena and Garcia – but the 2023 version of those guys.

Should be a packed house for the return of Tommy Pham in tonight’s game.

Will be interesting to see if he gets the start against the righty.

Carlson needs to distance himself from shoulder surgery. He needs a healthy full strength season, if that’s even possible.

Flaherty has reminded me this season what full strength looks like, and how long it can take to get back there.

Although there are good baseball reasons we got Pham, the overriding one was that we dealt away a “Tommy”, and having a “Tommy” is a good thing in baseball (Tommy Davis, Tommy John, etc).

Just to reiterate but with different data, the 2024 SABR Defensive Index for AL left fielders up to the All-Star break has Pham 14th of 15, or second worst in the league, with a negative 2.8 SDI.

As a reminder, SDI has real value as it is 25% of the Gold Glove score.

Pham’s job is to hit lefties, period. He might be an emergency option in CF, but one should hope they would put Lars there first.

As I said, Pham can still rake. Can still hit lefties!

Maybe this is the wrong thread but Ive never seen Goldy as outwardly exited as he was when Pham hit that grand salami. The energy couldnt have come at a better time. And there shouldnt be any negative energy about playing time now. Carlson is gone. It was going to be a chinese fire drill when TE got back. To me, the roles are clear now. Go play winning baseball.

Not seeing a lot of “negative drama” with Pham. Players seem thrilled to have him on the team!

    Great pickup!

The players like him. Johnny’s scared of him…
