Can anyone tell me how Saggese has looked at SS? Could he be good enough to back up at SS in the future?

I’ve wondered exactly that since Saggese has been playing mostly shortstop this year in Memphis, having played there a lot less previously in his pro career. I did look at Brian and Blake’s scouting blurb on him in the pre-season top prospects article, but that was written before he played at short all this year. It would be worth a read though.

One thing that stood out especially in that article, which is on the free side of the pay wall:

“A professional scout is unsure why the Cardinals acquired the infielder. “He was great in the Texas League, but he is not a good defender, and he doesn’t play shortstop, so what do they do with him?”, the scout asked rhetorically. ”

Like I said, that was this spring before he played shortstop all season.

You would think Saggese profiles as a second baseman. And with Gorman’s stock declining I can see us dealing him in the off season, with the plan being Donovan as the second sacker and Saggese given a long look in the Spring.

Shortstop is blocked for the near future, although if Saggese can handle it on a part-time basis he could stick with the big club next year in a utility role.

Still the defense is concerning. I wonder if Jose Oquendo might be able to help him, or perhaps he has worked with him some.

Pretty deep at 2B – Gorman, Donovan,
Saggese, Prieto, Dunn, Wetherholt, etc. My guess is that Wetherholt and Winn will eventually settle in as the middle infield. Excited for that.

The question in my mind is whether Saggese can back up shortstop better than Donovan. I don’t think the Cardinals were comfortable with the idea of Donovan in the role as primary backup, so Saggese would have to be better. If I had to guess, I would say no.

Well if possible I would like to see guys like Saggese, Prieto, and Baker with an opportunity for bench roles next year instead of guys like Crawford and Carp.

A list of names at a position doesn’t necessarily mean there’s depth there.

I echo gscottar and KCB. I would rather have younger up and coming guys in bench roles than guys there more for leadership than playing ability.

I agree with that, but the issue on the table here is whether Saggese, or any of them, can serve as Winn’s primary SS backup. If the answer is no, then we need either Crawford or somebody else.

Right now, we need Crawford. Saggese might be equal to Donovan. Fermin isn’t any better either. That’s why they’ll keep Crawford. Edman was our only shot at forcing Crawford out.

Crawford will be here the rest of this season but I would be very surprised if he is here in 2025. He will probably retire.
