    Summary –

It was probably a very good assessment to say that management “over expected” on several players to be at or above major league average at their respective positions. That would include both corner outfielders plus SS and 3B. Maybe 1st base too. Thank goodness Gyorko, DeJong, and Pham have helped considerably.

Wow, Brian. That’s quite a reaction. Sure didn’t mean for this to be a “squishy” discussion. Just one about our weak areas that need to be buoyed up before the deadline so we can make a legitimate run at a playoff position. Some disappointing player performances have caused that.
That’s all. Didn’t mean to put a bee in the bonnet.

IMHO, they are stacked with starters. Lots of minor league possible trade chips besides Weaver and Flaherty – Gant, Mayers, Artie Reyes, Pearce, Gomber, Helsley, Woodford, Hicks, and yes, even Alcantara, Fernandez, and Oviedo. Maybe zero in on a proven back of the bullpen flame thrower? If they get a proven ML SS, that forces a choice between Wong and DeJong for 2B. Is Gyorko the long term answer at 3B?

It’s not a refutation scenario, please. It’s looking at the disappointments (whatever and whoever),
thinking who may return to (or exceed) career norm, checking the capabilities on the Memphis roster, and summarizing where we need help from the outside. The O’Neill move has already been made. What’s next?
    Closer? Hold artist?
Veteran defensive SS? #3/4 bat? Who’s specific disappointments have created the need(s)?

It’s been well chronicled that Yadi is mentoring Kelly just like MM mentored him.

The Cards coaches were very impressed with Hudson’s 95mph sinking fastball at Spring Training. He’s a talent. Would like to keep Martinez, Reyes, Weaver, Flaherty, and Hudson. Others can be trade chips.

Hitters #1-6 in the lineup were 0 for 20 with 9 Ks.
    You describe that.

Glad they removed Fowler. Poor guy needs his rest.

Those are some good thoughts, Pads. Gotta believe one or two of them might be included in a deadline trade this month. Hudson seems like a prime candidate right now.

    Wacha – arbitration 2018 and 2019
    Waino – signed through 2018
    Carlos – signed through 2021
    (Team options 2022 and 2023)
Leake – signed through 2020 (Mutual option 2021)
    Reyes – controlled through 2022

Where does that leave Weaver, Marco G., Flaherty, Gant, Mayers, Pearce, Hudson, Gallen, Gomber, Alcantara, Fernandez, etc.?

Good comment on Alcantara and Fernandez. Hadn’t considered that. Just thought they were struggling.
I wonder how it effects their trade value.

I’ve learned never to say never. Who would have thought that DeJong, Voit, and Sierra would be contributing to the big club in July 2017. The big key is whether a strong start can be sustained. Can anyone really explain the backslide of Piscotty this season?

Tigers won’t do the deal for next to nothing. Backroom discussion with his agent for a sense of what extension could be agreed upon later makes a lot of sense. I don’t know how appropriate that is, though.

It’s a shame we’re blowing such a good performance by the rotatation. They must be torqued.

Cardinals starters rank #4 in MLB in ERA. Bullpen ranks #16.

This club needs a major trade to give them a jolt. The only energy on this team is in the rotation and with rookie position players.

Cardinals nearly always look for solutions that provide short term help with long term potential.
Like a Matt Holliday. Would look for that type of scenario.

I’d like to see he and Kelly get ample time at Memphis too.

The biggest question right now is whether Piscotty and Grichuk are the answer. If not, then it’s Fowler, Pham and either Bader or a trade addition. I’m almost always for promoting from within, but granted there’s an exception situation right now. Doubt BD will go for Stanton, but Ozuna makes a lot of sense if they can get him. He’s be expensive in players given up, but worth it.

Why is Martini never mentioned as a decent prospect and possible callup? His .412 OBP at Memphis should draw some attention. Is he too much of a AAAA player with little power and average speed?

Rosenthal’s key is to get ahead of batters and cut way down on his free passes.

Nothing like having a closer with
a 4.17 ERA. Starters must love it.
