No, I was not talking to you, Shady. My comments were directed toward those who take the time to do research to either back up or refute comments made and then get frustrated when it is not understood or accepted. Then the comments get personal and we go off the rails… again and again.

I really like the all around game that Winn brings to this ball club.
He’s going to be a fixture at SS for many years.

Winn is a stud, no doubt. The sky is truly the limit with him!!!!

Best SS the Cards have developed since Gary Templeton.

Brian, OK, I’ll take a break for a while. No biggie !!! By the way, whether you care or not, I’ve not been overly impressed with the vibes, by you. I’ve got on here regarding Burleson. Kinda of disappointing from what I consider an astute Cardinals baseball observer. I guess we have very difference observations on Burleson, now and maybe for the future. Stay tuned on Burleson !

I was hoping for a keystone combination of Winn and Edman. That would have been special. If not that, then Winn and Saggese. But it looks like it’s going to be Winn and Wetherholt and that’s even more exciting.

Getting a competent right handed bench player changes everything. You dont have to play 2 guys who don’t hit lefties and don’t play plus defense. Carlson had an important role. He just didnt fulfill it. I expect Pham to come down to earth some. But we got nothing from Carlson while we waited for his trade value to go up.

Agreed, and at a more basic level, getting some usefulness out of the bench at all is huge. Carp, Crawford and Carlson was tough to work with. Obviously, the bench will need a total rebuild over the winter.

Do not make a whole lot out of the new fangled stats used nowadays; that saying they have their place, I guess. Our wonderful game has always been a numbers puzzle. Concerning Burleson, my eyes tell me he is a hitter. He doesn’t give up at bats and puts the ball in play. Hie demeanor in the box is definitely that of a big leaguer. I like that versus a 40% K rate. 2d thought, looking for imput; appears to me that Arenado takes a lot of early pitches, putting him down 0-1, 0-2 before ever taking the bat off his shoulder. Betting on one swing per AB seems pretty slim odds. Thoughts?

Arenado needs to get back to working hard and re-dedicating himself, like Gray said he was going to do. All the skills are still there for both of them.

The one piece to this puzzle that needs to come through is Walker.
His ceiling is higher than all the young guys.

Interesting. We’ve always been told by our beloved broadcasters that Arenado is one of the hardest working players in the game. Tireless work ethic.

So, I bought into that narrative as I honestly have no way of knowing myself.

Now I need to know…is this just a feeling you have or do you have some inside scoop. It wouldn’t be the first time reality was different than the media narrative…

All the skills are still there for both of them.

I think that is unlikely. Gray and Arenado are at the age where a decline in skills is likely and normal. Players have to gradually transition to relying more on their experience and the instincts that come with experience. As a general proposition, some players will be more successful at making that transition than others, and just because a player has had especially good skills doesn’t mean they will be especially good at relying more on experience once the skill start to fade. In other words, just because someone has been a good player doesn’t mean they will be a good late career player. We will have to see how it plays out.

Today’s starting lineup is about the best lineup Oli can put out there vs RHP. Though it might be better to switch Nootbaar and Donovan at 6 and 8. Although, it is nice to have Donovan, Siani and Winn hitting just ahead of the top RBI man, Burleson, as the lineup turns over. I’m still not sure about what the best lineup vs LHP should be. Pham sure helps.

With Edman and Carlson gone, both OFers, should we have to add an OFer from Memphis its looking more and more that it will be Koperniak. The guy is hitting a ton.

What’s holding that up is that he is a LHB, he was a NDFA and probably Brian.

    bb and Albert –

I was astounded when I heard the Gray interview after his 4th poor showing in a row (before last night), when he said
that to be a really good player one needs to work very hard, and dedicate themselves to excellence. That he needs to get back to doing that, and that he knew how to do it. On top of that, I was sitting behind home plate in the Cardinals 1st game against the Rangers and watched Arenado make a very lack luster run to first base on a ground ball.

    Hope that answers your questions.

I wasn’t expecting to see Pham in the outfield much and not at all vs RHP. But I also wasn’t expecting to see Gorman sitting vs RHP. There is a lot of worm turning going on.

Well i read an article trying to translate phams return to albert pijols in 2022. I think its a joke to put pham in the same sentence as pujols let alone try to compare them or their returns in anyway. But the media doesnt have much scruples anymore even in the sports biz.

Pham’s not a key to the Cardinals longer term future. Guys like Winn, Gorman, Walker, Nootbaar, Herrera/Pages, Scott, Wetherholt, etc. are. Now, if some pitchers like McGreevy, Graceffo, Hence, Roby, Robberse, etc. can surface, it will be a rosy future.

bccran, I’d say Burleson is also a “huge” key to the Cardinals longer term future. Probably at 1B. Burly is only 25.

Okay, Shady, should probably have included him too, although he’s rather one dimensional. Let’s also add him to the list.

bccran, Walker and Gorman “getting it together” is what’s “huge” going forward. As well as some young starting pitching developing at the MLB level. McGreevy’s recent performance was encouraging.

I don’t believe I used the word “huge”, but perhaps that word applies.

I’d go with this lineup tomorrow against the lefty. And then against the Mets’ LHP Mon.

    1) Winn SS
    2) Pham RF
    3) Contreras DH
    4) Goldschmidt 1B
    5) Arenado 3B
    6) Burleson LF
    7) Donovan 2B
    8) Pages C
    9) Nootbaar CF

Shady, I would have Burly and Donovan in the heart of the order instead of Goldschmidt and Arenado. We have a chance still for post season, so feature the guys that got us here, platoon matchups be damned. I hate seeing fat paychecks displacing guys who have gutted it out.

blingboy, Burly’s on pace for a plus 25 HRs and plus 90 RBIs season. Pretty good numbers for a 25 years old player. That’s where Gorman should be at 25 and Walker when he’s 25. Burleson has turned out to be a heckuva 2nd round pick. And Donovan in round 7.

Goldy is getting it done now. Leave him middle order until he cools.
