Would like to see a Colome pickup but Longoria? No thanks. I’ll take Jedd Gyorko over him, and especially for the $$.
Never heard of the guy but it seems like a low floor, low ceiling signing. Can’t complain much. Hopefully another example of the Cards scouting paying off, in the long run.
For a team that is almost always successful and has a great tradition and excellent fan support…the Cards sure do seem to have trouble selling a lot of guys on playing for them.
Wow. On the surface, this seems like a horrendous trade. Diaz probably isn’t 2016 good but he’s a big league player with 4 more years of control. Maybe he’s irreparably damaged or something but…still…
Kinda stinks since you would hope they would be subject to the money rules from the class they were in, but understandable. Would have been nice to get Maitan since I think the Cards were after him hard in 2016.
Boy, if this team hadn’t stumbled so badly early in the season with all the blown leads, this would be a pretty solid record by now.
As is, they’re still in it with a few weeks to go. All you could realistically hope for at the beginning of the season.
Sounds more like both sides are in it for the publicity and one is wilding the bigger bat (no pun intended).
Kind of a silly side story but cute while it lasted, those two days.
Woodford has seemed to plateau..which is ok at his age and experience. He’s not particularly exciting but he’s been average at Palm Beach as a 20 year old (3.14 ERA/4.09 FIP). Could be a Matt Bowman type in years to come, or perhaps a back end starter in the Mike Leake mold. Not a lot of K’s and they’ve decreased every year but keeps the ball down and just gets outs. Not bad at all for a guy who probably barely cracks the top 10 starter threshold in this system.
Absolutely no doubt about it, the Cards need a big bat in the lineup. We were spoiled with Pujols all those years and Holliday to an extent after him. There are a bunch of “nice” hitters in the system, including a lot at the MLB level. One *could* turn into a masher but the odds are against it. It’s just as likely that Bader, Kelly, Voit, etc become average offensive types. That gets you a decent floor but limited upside.
The one guy on the farm that I have hopes to become a legit premium bat at this point is Dylan Carlson…and he’s so far away that it’d be silly to project that at this point.
I believe Wade Davis and Greg Holland are both free agents to be and probably the best bets for an outside closer.
Last offseason, I was a huge fan of going after Jansen from LA. Now, he would have cost a mint but he’s dominant and likely to stay that way and would have made the bullpen for this year pretty good with several more years of closing to come. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess but with Rosie set to come off the books he probably would have been a $12m a year upgrade from what we had, which for the security of knowing the 9th was locked down for the foreseeable future…would be completely worth it.
As for next year… I’m thinking they’ll start the season with a veteran in the role, such as Cecil or even Siegrist. I’m not sure who is available as a free agent but wouldn’t rule out a Hudson, Alcantara or even Helsley being in the bullpen next year. Reyes will probably begin there too.

This article was related to the draft but…in a sense, yes the Cards have done better than is typical.
This closing stretch is a nice breather of a schedule in a lot of ways. Of course, they have had “easy” stretches before that they choked on too. It would be nice to sweep the Pads.
Helsley seems like a good candidate for the Rosenthal treatment. They’re gonna need to move some of these guys into bullpen roles some day.
Definitely Grichuk. He’s very streaky and the last couple years have been particularly so. He’s also not as good with the glove as Pham and comes with a lower walk rate. He’s younger, of course, so the values would be similar…I just think it’s more likely Pham plays better the next few years.
With Martinez on the mound, I’m sure they’ll score their customary 2 runs.
A sweep would be marvelous.
Ok, thanks. I wondered… considering last we heard, Mayers was being moved to the bullpen in Memphis, it would be strange to put him back into the rotation in St Louis.
Sounds like it’s retroactive to his last start? Maybe just a way to get him a start off and bring Weaver up for one.
I’ve gotta admit…I was as excited about this win as any this year. Guys like Sierra, Dejong and Bader are just fun to watch. Maybe they won’t be stars long term but they (and someone like Pham) play with an edge and the speed is really enjoyable to see on the base paths. Who else scores on that lazy fly ball to right? Good win…I’ve gotten past expecting any type of spring board effect but just gonna enjoy seeing the kids play.
