Brian, I agree. I tried to post something similar that wouldn’t go through. He’s a good guy to bring in for the double play and earlier than the 7th if needed but he doesn’t have the stuff to pitch the 8th.
Cards can’t take advantage of Arenado missing a play he usually makes. A pop-up and a double play…still tied. I’m afraid we have seen this game before and the way that it typically ends.
The Cards with 10 hits tonight and only two runs to show for it. The Rockies haven’t done much but have kept it in reach. This is the exact kind of game that this team has found a way to lose over and over again this year. Really hoping the Cards can pull it out.
Lynn is gassed, but looked really good entering this inning. Possibly his last start as a Cardinal and he did well.
Unfortunately, the game will probably be tied so he likely won’t be in line for a win.
Disappointing inning there…the first two runners on and then three straight K’s. Would have been nice to build a cushion.
Two years? Pham isn’t even arbitration eligible for two years. The team getting him would have him the rest of his career basically.
Now, that’s potentially valuable but also potentially valuable to St Louis too. Unless they’re blown away by an offer, I think it would be a mistake to trade Tommy. I would definitely drop Grichuk first, and probably Piscotty too (who may have more trade value). Pham could get injured and make the wait look dumb but there’s also the upside that he’s a 3-4 WAR guy for the next three years for dirt cheap. Besides, if you wait til next year he’s still at a good age and cheap and can be traded if the team is doing poorly then too, and probably for more.
Bader with the hustle, even though he was called out. Good to see.
Also, I believe someone (maybe Pads) referenced this before but Bader has a career 1.289 OPS against lefties. That’s just insane. Lest you think it was just him beating up on low minors pitching…he’s at .403/.469/.889 for a 1.358 OPS this year. If nothing else, he should be one heck of a platoon bat.
Bader has actually played almost all his innings this year in CF, and the majority of his minor league career as well.
That’s a good article on Alcantara. I’ve been a proponent of moving him to the bullpen, but it’s good to see he’s gaining some traction in Springfield. Thanks for the read.
Maybe a trade is happening. Wouldn’t they need to clear a space on the 40 man for him, or was there one clear already?
It’s very strange. Same thing with Harrison Bader vs Clint Frazier. Very similar stats across the board (Bader with better contact and fewer walks) and both considered tweener OF but Frazier ranks 27th and Bader misses the top 100 entirely. I guess in the end, the prospect lists aren’t the end of the matter but it’s not very consistent.
Weird that O’Neill went from 29 to 75 right after the trade and then out of the top 100 a few days later.
Also, I believe that’s down a few spots for Kelly?
Carpenter would probably fetch one top 100 guy and maybe two lotto tickets. Would you trade Bader, Hicks and Plummer for Carpenter? If you would, that’s fine but that’s basically his value.
Personally, I’d rather have his bat in the lineup the next couple years and as insurance for Gyorko regressing or getting hurt. The only way I’m happy with a Carpenter trade is if we get a heist back or are going to acquire a legit star on the left side of the infield (Donaldson, Machado sure, Simmons would be bare minimum).
Thanks for that, Brian. I think people are too down on Carpenter for two reasons…1) Early season when he was struggling with the glove, and people can’t forget that. 2) Some bad luck in the BABIP category this year. He’s running a .273 when he’s a career .323 in that category. He’s still making good contact, just hitting a lot of balls right at people. I don’t have the time to calculate it right now but with a normal BABIP I believe he’d be running around a .270/.410/.470 line and with the defense he plays, that’s a pretty dang good first baseman.
Could you please explain the thought process behind this? Carpenter is 8th among 1B in DRS and 12th in UZR/150. This would put him solidly above average defensively and he’s at least average with the bat too (14th in wRC+). I feel like this is a tired narrative that needs to be addressed so we can all stop it with the Matt Carpenter trashing.
Jager, I don’t think I would want to be in on any rentals unless they were low hanging fruit type of deals. I’m not sure those teams would go for them.
That said, if there was a controllable guy who would be an upgrade for next year and even beyond, I would support going for that. Not a lot of those guys out there though and the trade would be painful. But a shake up is definitely needed.
While those guys have done well this year, O’Neill also had 24 homers last year in AA and 32 the year before. He’s got pretty legit power, I think.
I’m not sure, but if this year’s debacle continues, I suspect we would see them trying out guys to stabilize the pen.
For me, it’s Diaz and the back end of the bullpen, mostly.
I never expected Diaz to be an amazing fielder, but I did anticipate the bat being able to play well enough. He’s just lost this year and isn’t even hitting at Memphis right now. Last year may turn out to be a huge anomaly for him, which really stinks. We were expecting him to be part of the three headed OBP monster and driving the lineup.
Cecil, Rosenthal and Oh have combined to make a real mess of the 8th and 9th for a good chunk of the season. Other relievers have been poor as well, but these three are the money guys (Oh to a lesser extent, but he was so good last year and the ‘closer’ to start this one) so to have them falter makes the whole pen look even worse.
