To my knowledge we have not added a single pitcher since the day we lost to the Phillies in game 2! The only move we made was letting Quintana go and you could make a solid argument he was our best pitcher down the stretch last year! Don’t see how that makes us better but to each his own! I like Matz and Montgomery! I think they can be solid 3 and 4 guys if healthy!I have a hard time seeing Flaherty and Mikolas as a solid 1 and 2! I hope I can come on here in June and say how wrong I was about them! Time will tell!
I don’t see how we are better off pitching wise than we were last year! We still need a solid 1 and 2 and we have neither! Everyone HOPES that Flaherty and Mikolas have great years and become a dominant 1 and 2 but I think most on here would agree that is highly unlikely! Most likely we will be good enough to win a weak division and then get tossed in the first round of the playoffs! Eventually the poor playoff play will cause more and more people to call for change! I for one hope that soon we will buy or trade for a number one starter! Things will start to change after we do that IMO!
Hicks hasn’t been able to throw strikes even in High School! He is exactly the same pitcher now he was when he was 16! He will be wild and ineffective it is who he is!
One word for that contract
STEALING
I am 62 and surely can’t field as well as he can, but I’ll take a 4th of his salary, be a great bench guy and maybe even hit at least as well! Lol!Euro Dandy, can you run those numbers on Paul DeJong’s salary?

January 14, 2023 at 2:52 pm in reply to: Will Walker have more of an early impact than Carlson has been? #210863If Walker isn’t better than Carlson he will be a huge disappointment! Carlson has been a flop up to now! Outfield is a great concern to me! We were told last year we had the best young outfield in baseball with O’Neill and Bader and Carlson! Not so much! Seems many have given up on all 3 and now we have a new young outfield of Walker and Nootbar and Burleson! Sounds suspect to me! Just the defensive issues would be big with those 3 in the OF! Plus I’m not sure Burleson can hit at major league level! He sure couldn’t last year! What concerns me is we don’t have a single outfielder on our roster we can count on to play everyday and produce! Most contending teams have at least 1 and maybe 2 guys they can pencil in and know that they are gonna be there and produce! We MUST get better at all 3 of those positions to contend!
I fear Nathan is right! I’m personally tired of the total playoff failures and can’t see it getting any better with our current pitching staff! I am hopeful that a couple of more one and some playoff series will light a fire but I’m not sure if even that will do it!
PDJ has never had a season where he hit 259 with 30 doubles and 25 homers so that would be his all time greatest season! I would bet my house that ain’t gonna happen this year or any other year!
PDJ is 141 for 718 for a 196 average in the last three years! Yes he has had a good week here or there but those are his numbers! To me, enough is enough! We have younger players that are not gonna get valuable mlb reps they need because we are giving them to PDJ and that makes no sense to me!
Bob, some may agree with you about PDJ but I think most feel like I do! He has gotten worse every season for 5 years! Even he will find it hard to get worse than he was last year but I believe it is possible! No other team would have been sticking him out there day after day to fail! If we don’t have better players than him we are in deep trouble! One of the 4 or 5 worst hitters I think I have ever seen! By the end of the year pitchers with 91 or 92 mph fastball would throw it right down the middle and he couldn’t even foul it off! It is ridiculous for him to still be on the roster!
1982 I agree, hope someone gives him a chance and feel sure someone will, but it won’t be us! I can’t think of a situation where so much has been take from taken from someone with so little proved!
December 22, 2022 at 1:03 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #209716Needing 5 starters in 2024 will be a blessing in disguise! Maybe it will force management to buy a number 1 starter and trade for a number 2! If that happens without even seeing who they are our staff in 2024 will be better than the one we are gonna have in 2023! IMO!
Under, way under!
Actually I agree with you almost always and have tried to give you Mo’s job on several other posts with no success yet! Lol!
It does make me wonder how that 82 team would do against today’s clubs!
If Mo is the boss and has final say on all of managers decisions I fear we are worse off than I thought! I am 62 and retired and getting by and I would never manage a team that I didn’t make all final calls, not even for all that money! Mo has some some good things especially at the trade dead lines in 2011, 2022 and the year we got Holiday but I trust him to keep us right where we are, about 6 or 7 out of a 15 team league! I want to be 2 or 3! Lol!
I would be good with that IF we would used money saved to go get a solid 1 or even 2
Jj-cf just asking, not trying to start something, but if I am the manager and I have a pitcher in the minors I want to bring up for a start are you saying I can’t do that? I always thought if the manager wanted someone to start a game that was what was gonna happen! Are you saying what happens is Mo goes to Ollie and says here is who is starting this next game?
He listed Hicks as one of the starters in an earlier post!
He may become a FA but unless he actually pitches this year I can’t imagine anyone giving him 15 million a year! Maybe someone will but I hope it is not us! 15 million a year would be about 5 million per quality start for him the last three years!
There are very few if any people on here who don’t see that the Jake Woodford situation was handled poorly and unfairly and worst of all it hurt the team! The bosses have to see this also and this leads me to believe he will be given more of a chance than he was last year! If not he will be traded and in 2024 we will be saying we could have had Alcantara, Gallen and Woodford as our 1,2 and 3 but no!
I agree with 25, it would be nice if we jumped out and spent an extra 50 million and went and got an ace and a number 2 and become a WS favorite but based on the past it is highly unlikely! I think BW said it best! Our current bosses like the model of competing for the division and hoping to get hot in the playoffs over spending more and becoming a WS favorite and I get it! It is the fiscally responsible thing to do but as I get older I get less hopeful almost every year that we can pull off another 2011 miracle especially when our pitching staff is no better than it was last year and I’m convinced that ain’t gonna be good enough!
What’s crazy is I thought our bast chance to win was game 1 and Mikolas pitched well but Sanchez looked like he did with Detroit! Dominant! The other 3 match ups I knew we were in trouble!
1tD, you are correct! That is exactly how the bosses are playing it! And you never know! We might get lucky one year but I always go back to that 2019 NLCS and look at those starting pitcher match ups and it’s not a surprise what happened!
