While it is true that “best farm system” is not always defined as exactly the same thing as “best current collection of prospects,” I believe that in this instance the two descriptors are interchangeable. Because nobody in their right mind believes that the Baltimore Orioles are presently the strongest organization for producing quality MLB talent — but they certainly have the best prospects right now. And the poll reflects that.

ParticipantAs someone who has been a Cardinal minor league nerd back to the days of LeRoy Grossini leading Florida State league shortstops in fielding pctg., I have to say we may have more talent now across the board more so than I ever remember. Since when have we had more starting pitchers, outfielders, and catchers than places to put them? If I see any hole for talent, then it is third base or we are a bit light up the middle. That is only because Gorman and Donavon aren’t really prospects anymore. Our record wasn’t the best last year, but our teams were so young compared to their competition. It is an exciting time to be a fan and have very tradeable talent to pick up that “missing” piece if we don’t have it already. We could trade two rotation pieces, an outfielder, and a catching prospect and not blink an eye to get a potential ace.

ParticipantSlid….You never have enough catching. One injury at the first domino and the whole line collapses leaving all of the teams scurrying to bring someone up and right down the line. You need to have a solid plan-B for every affiliate. The rest is true.
ps. there are only two catchers in the TCN top-50. And I don’t know how much further down you’d have to go to find another one.January 13, 2023 at 10:59 am #210817Ny said:

You must have meant two times two! One in top 10, two in top 20, three in top 30 and four in top 40. The C pipeline looks ok to me.

100%. When you’re constantly picking top 5 and don’t cheap out, you’re bound to have some big hits.
January 13, 2023 at 12:19 pm #210826Speaking of vindication I am glad to see it finally publicly acknowledged that both the Cardinals and Dodgers are draft and develop teams.
Yes the Dodgers usually spend more on big name players but they aren’t this year. The Bauer fiasco has almost completely handcuffed them.
January 13, 2023 at 7:20 pm #210844That 2020 Cardinals draft is one for the ages. Walker, Winn, and Hence from the same draft! And Burleson is looking like he’ll get some Major League playing time sooner rather than later. Plus, I still have high hopes for Ian Bedell. And LJ Jones has a decent chance of seeing the Majors, too, IMHO. If a kid can just get a Major League contract for only one year, he banks $700,000. What a start in life for a twenty-something young man!

I’m thinking Luis Rodriguez would have to be one of the best of the rest at 17 years old Hitting .301 with an OPS of .820. He did miss quite a few games.

I wonder what that comes to after paying the agent and taxes?

Many possible variables here, but assuming simplistic case of a single guy with no other income and no special tax considerations for 2023, here goes. Also state income taxation can be complex for athletes, but I’m assuming all income taxable by my state (VA) only in this example.
Salary = $700,000
Agent Commission (often 5%) = $35,000
Federal Income Tax = $214,208
VA Income Tax = $39,680
Soc Sec Tax = $9,932
Medicare Tax = $14,650
Others deductions for sure, such as medical insurance, union dues, pension plan, etc., but not included hereNet Income (take home) = $386,530
I think most baseball players get paid 12 times per year (2 times each month April through September), so that would be $32,211 per check.
January 14, 2023 at 6:44 pm #210897Euro Dandy, can you run those numbers on Paul DeJong’s salary?
January 14, 2023 at 7:00 pm #210898You could live real good on $386K take home pay. How good would depend on where you live and how much of it you wanted to put aside.

Sure, kinda fun. Who’s been playing the billion dollar Mega Millions jackpot recently and wondered what that would be like to win? LOL
Same assumptions before except for $9MM salary:
Salary = $9,000,000
Agent Commission (often 5%) = $450,000
Federal Income Tax = $3,285,208
VA Income Tax = $516,930
Soc Sec Tax = $9,932
Medicare Tax = $209,700Annual Net Income (take home) = $4,528,230
Get paid 12 times per year at $377,353 per check.
January 14, 2023 at 9:59 pm #210900One word for that contract
STEALING
I am 62 and surely can’t field as well as he can, but I’ll take a 4th of his salary, be a great bench guy and maybe even hit at least as well! Lol!January 14, 2023 at 10:48 pm #210901Its his contract year, he’ll hit. Like a miracle. And Flaherty will stay healthy.
January 15, 2023 at 9:45 pm #210976Draft and develop until they are the favorite to sign what may be the richest free agent contract in MLB history… Bauer must have only handcuffed them for one year.
Per @BNightengale: The Padres are the Dodgers "stiffest competition" for Shohei Ohtani. They "plan to be all in" on him next offseason pic.twitter.com/YWEgtV1MZc
