January 14, 2023 at 12:46 pm #210860The Cards still have their dry powder…
#STLCards President John Mozeliak said the team was determined to not “spend money just to spend” this offseason. He predicted that the organization has more remaining resources than in the past and will add more talent as Spring Training and the season progresses.

January 14, 2023 at 3:04 pm #210865Any chance Jordan Hicks will FINALLY be able to throw the ball over the plate in 2023? He walked 35 batters in 61 innings last year.
January 15, 2023 at 9:52 am #210908He’s going to channel Satchel Paige who, according to Whitey Herzog, could throw a strike over a bubble gum wrapper.

Its his contract year. Its going to be like a miracle happening.
January 15, 2023 at 5:28 pm #210942Hicks hasn’t been able to throw strikes even in High School! He is exactly the same pitcher now he was when he was 16! He will be wild and ineffective it is who he is!

cardsfan64ParticipantI have a question about salary for players demoted from the major league team to the minors. Do they get their regular paycheck while playing for AAA as they do with the ML team? For example, if Hudson is optioned to the minors will he get a pay cut?
Looking at the current roster and players with no options, it may be tricky to fill out the bullpen without exposing someone to waivers, ie. VerHagen or Stratton. Fangraphs shows only one lefty in the pen unless some moves are made, and that doesn’t even include Wilking Rodriguez (Rule 5) in the mix. I guess that is what ST is for to decide who stays and who goes!January 19, 2023 at 9:39 am #211170Hudson would get his 2.65M whether he was in St. Louis or Memphis, just like DeJong got his big league salary last year when he got demoted.
What is tricky is when someone starts in Memphis, is promoted to St. Louis, then demoted back down to Memphis. It is my understanding in that scenario the player would only get big league pay for the days he was in the big leagues.

jj-cf-stlParticipantRE: tricky part
For pre-arb players I agree they get active roster pay when up, and 40man pay when down.
For Hudson, he’s arb pay, whether active roster or not. Since he didn’t go to a hearing I’m expecting his arb pay is guaranteed.

September 17, 2023 at 10:42 am #234026Used the nifty search feature at the ‘forums’ tab to find this old payroll thread. Here are some observations from spotrac.com/mlb/payroll, which purports to be real time. I’m not drawing any conclusions just putting it out here. I note also that the Cards are 18 under .500 and the Brewers are 20 over .500.
2023 payroll Cards $153 Million, ranks 17th. Brewers $124 Million, 19th
26 man roster payroll, Cards $116 13th, Brewers $89 16th
IL payroll, Cards $14.7 20th, Brewers $14 21st
payroll retained for players released, bought out or traded, Cards $20.5 14th, Brewers $10 22nd
ML payroll to players in minors, Cards $1.5 25th, Brewers $11.6 1stI’m wondering if there is any insight to be had here as far as what the org needs to do differently or better. I compare to the Brewers just as an example of a team with vastly better results this season.
September 17, 2023 at 11:33 am #234028It’s not about how much you spend, per se, but how efficiently you use your resources.
The Cardinals currently have 3-4 openings in the rotation next year, plus have several openings in the bullpen.
How do they acquire those players when there don’t appear to be any answers at Memphis?
September 17, 2023 at 12:09 pm #234030I trust Cots more than other payroll sites. They have the Cards at $176M (14th) and Brewers at $118M (20th).
Regardless the difference is very obvious. The Brewers have three of the best starters in the NL with Burnes, Woodruff, and Peralta. The Cardinals have zero good starters. Since the Brewers have such a good rotation they don’t have to spend as much on their lineup.
The Brewers have also had a great front office led by David Stearns (who is now going to the Mets) and a very good manager in Craig Counsell (who is in the final year of his contract…hmmm…Mets?) Meanwhile the Cardinals have a very stale front office and have had a carousel of rookie managers trying to learn on the fly. The Brewers have just been a better ran and more efficient organization recently but their future looks cloudy as these pitchers get closer to free agency and their manager gets to the end of his deal.
September 17, 2023 at 8:27 pm #234050Not disagreeing with the Milwaukee comparison, but wanted to point out that Counsell was also a rookie manager. He was hired to run the Brewers with zero coaching experience at any level, college or pro, at age 44. He had worked in the front office and as a broadcaster after his playing days.
Counsell started 25 games into his first season and finished his first two years a combined 31 games under .500. They stuck with him and have had winning records in six of the following seven years (excepting 2020-Covid). He has never been NL Manager of the Year (Shildt won in 2019).
What a difference a year makes. Had this comparison been made in 2022, I suspect the Cardinals would have been the team that came out better (despite a higher payroll). The Cardinals are having a terrible 2023, but over time, they have been the better organization in terms of win-loss record.
Since 2015, Counsell’s first year, until today, the Brewers are .526, The Cardinals are .541.
September 17, 2023 at 11:20 pm #234054I believe Hudson would be non tendered and O’Neill will. They non tendered Brebbia for less money.
September 18, 2023 at 7:48 am #234070They may want to keep Hudson for depth. A starter is more valuable than a non-closing reliever, so I don’t think Brebbia is apples to apples.
A possible rub is Hudson’s service time. He has minor league options remaining but cannot be sent down after five years of ST without his consent and he would have the right to become a free agent immediately.
He had 4.066 coming into 2023. He spent over three months with Memphis, so without calculating it, I think he may fall just short of five years heading into this offseason. If so, having the flexibility to send him down next spring would make him valuable enough to keep, IMO.
September 18, 2023 at 10:17 am #234081You make good points Brian regarding Counsell but I am of the opinion that he will be highly sought after around the league if he doesn’t come back to the Brewers. The Cardinal rookie managers haven’t been highly sought after. Matheny got a little stint with the Royals, Shildt got no offers to manage that I know of, and I am assuming there wouldn’t be a hot market for Marmol at this point.
September 18, 2023 at 10:26 am #234082Yes. My point was that the Brewers also went with a rookie manager, but had the patience to play it out despite a very rough start. Counsell was able to grow and become a good MLB manager. I think Shildt had/has that same potential. He was more successful on the field sooner, but obviously ran into political problems. He will manage again, I bet. Who knows? Maybe he will replace Counsell in Milwaukee!
September 18, 2023 at 11:24 am #234083That is true. I have been surprised that Shildt hasn’t received another opportunity yet. Very strange.
