Lance Lynn took less than the QO as well to sign with Minnesota. Pitchers over 30 look to be less valuable than in the recent past. Teams are not willing to take on the risk that comes with signing an older pitcher to a multi-year deal.
When Holland is ready to pitch for the Cards two decisions have to be made. One needs to come off the 25-man roster and one has to come off the 40-man roster. It seemed to me that Bowman, Mayers, Tuivailala were auditioned yesterday. But than again who is Holland replacing? It is one of the “potential” closers, right?
So to make the decisions easier, maybe it should be Norris as odd mad out.He hasn’t been given much of a try out but at present he doesn’t appear to be the closer that he was acquired to be. He’s really a one year rental whereas the other candidates are under control. He could catch on elsewhere. This would also end the musical chairs the FO has been forced into playing. Just a thought.
I would guess guys like Tui, Bowman, Mayers, and Norris will be fighting for their roster spot between now and when Holland joins the team. Tui and Norris don’t have options so that could factor into the decision.
As for when Holland will be ready I would assume he has been throwing on his own this spring but could probably use some simulated game action. Maybe we will see him sometime during the opening homestand.
With Holland, Gregerson, Lyons, Leone, Hicks, and eventually Reyes we all of a sudden have a very stacked pen. Hopefully Norris and Mayers will be good too. I don’t have much confidence in Tui and Bowman and absolutely zero confidence in Cecil.

——————————————————————————————————Totally agree here gscottar. Except if you are in dire need of a doubleplay then Bowman might be an option. Neither he or Cecil throw very hard and I’ve always wondered how they keep from getting hit hard.

I’m kind of worried about Mayers, too. His fastball to me looks like it is coming in straight and flat. I guess he can get by with that as long as he ‘paints’ the corners with it. But if he ever lets it drift out over the plant, I’m afraid someone is going to lose it for him.
Yeah it appears Holland likely wasn’t get the multi year offers he thought he would and his agent just took the best deal possible and will go out there looking for a multi year deal next season.
Cardinals get the closer they needed. It’s just odd it took as long and they forfeit the pick. Which to me isn’t that much of an issue.
I pretty much nailed that expected 2018 payroll figure back in November. They spent $151.2M last year, with a 5% annual increase that has steadily taken place every year since 2007, that put us with a budget of $158.8M, and with Holland locked up, we are at $158.1M.
Nice. Next year will be $166.7M fwiw. If everything is held constant, we have $20.0M in extensions and raises, while we lose $36M to free agency (Wainwright, Holland, and Norris) so we will have $16M to spend.
Even if Holland flops (which I don’t think he will) I like this signing because the front office finally sends the message that they give a da**, which I think a lot of people have been waiting to see.

He is probably laying low for awhile. Either that, or he will show up and call Holland a “slug”, saying he wasn’t a real addition.
Which brings me to this.
Crunching some numbers. Greg Holland has had 206 save opportunities in his career. Number of blown saves? Just 20. And never more than 5 blown saves in one season. Despite turbulence in 2017, only blew four, in 45 opportunities. #STLCards

Well, the answer is they did not want to lose anyone more.
Greg Holland has been added to #stlcards 40-man roster with Alex Reyes moved to 60-day DL to make room. Holland has been assigned to high-A Palm Beach and will ramp up in Florida before being added to the 25-man active roster at a date TBD.

Turbulence my butt, the bullpeners in 2017 lost 28+ games. Sure seems like there were more blown saves than 4. A few less losses we’d have been a wild card. But with the addition of Holland, Leone, and Hicks, I very much like the makeup and depth of the pen.

It does not work that way. He accrues service time while on 60-day, same as all last season.
I wrote about Reyes’ service time for members back in January.
that’s right, my bad. I was hoping we had reclaimed last seasons lost pre-arb yr for a 2019 pre-arb yr.

So I am still unsure of Holland’s status. Is he on the 10 day DL? Is there a special status category for signings such as his?
