August 4, 2018 at 2:18 pm in reply to: What is wrong with Dexter Fowler and what should be done? #63937
Anybody have any idea how long Fowler will be lost now?
According to this article, he may be lost for the rest of the year:
Fowler out for year?Let’s hope Bader & O’Neill do so exceptionally well the rest of the year, the Cardinals don’t even think of naming Fowler a starter next year…
This is probably the best thing that could’ve happened to prevent the front office from sabotaging the team for the rest of the season.
Over on MLBTR, they have this quote from a rival exec:
But one rival questions whether the organization has “a real understanding of where they are within their process.”
In other words, our front office is in denial.
Well, CC, you are also getting your wish on #4, as the Cardinals continue to start Fowler every game even though he is a detriment to the team.
They’d probably be using Gregerson every game, but he is now out for the year. I guess we can hope for the same with Cecil.
Who.did they acquire that will help them in 2019?
Nate said this year, which is 2018. I will assume he is talking about Shreve
…but there certainly is a need for Lefthanded quality pitchers and Lefty hitting quality OFs in the system.
The operative word is quality.
We got Shreve because the Yankees upgraded to Britton (and we gave them $1 million in international bonus pool money + a better AAA 1B than they had in their system).
The Rays were willing to trade Cabrera because they upgraded to Beeks.
This is why this front office has built an average team. We settle for average.
And BW52 – since you were addressing me, where do I say anything about Pham and tradition?
MO said in an interview that he traded Pham because ‘Pham wasn’t producing’,
Yet they continue to run Fowler out there daily, and he is by far the worst position player on the team.
The lack of quality middle infielders is a concern that still needs to be addressed…
And I would rather have a better hitting right-handed hitter than a guy that is there just because he is left-handed. Go upside, not need.
LOL – even Chicago writers can’t figure out what the Cardinals are doing…
i’d prefer Bader in there for Fowler, but it lines up with them trying to get Fowler going
He is worthless if on the bench i guess, at least if he is playing he might figure it out, his upside is still there and he has been known to get hot…
Considering Fowler is a negative both on defense and offense, he is actually worth less on the field than on the bench. He is a detriment to this club. Everybody knows how bad he is defensively, including the players. Do you think teammates will rally around a guy who hustles all the time, or who is last in, first out on game day?
Fowler needs to be benched the rest of the season and during the offseason he can ask for a trade.
The Cardinals had a glut of outfielders and pitchers in the system, so they traded for outfielders and pitchers. But hey! They’re left-handed!!!
The lack of vision in this front office never ceases to amaze me.
Well, the Cardinals added a left-handed bat and a left-handed reliever to the system, and they unclogged the outfield logjam a little bit. So I guess that is progress.
I look forward to seeing what Bader and O’Neill can do with more playing time.
Ozuna!!!!
They’ve got to keep up their appearances that they are still trying to win to draw those 3 million+ fans
JMart should have been hitting for Fowler
Bases loaded, nobody out, and we let Fowler hit for himself.
Predictable outcome.
This is the time you bring in JMart
If we are going to get a 3Bman from the Rockies, get Welker.
No way the Rockies are trading Welker now, Arenado is a free agent after next season.
Martinez injury right shoulder strain.
Often, when coming back from injury, you tend to make adjustments that cause you to injure other parts of your body. My guess is, in trying to not re-injure his oblique, he put excess stress on the shoulder.
In general, I think the Cardinals are too slow to promote DSL players.
I mean Cordoba won what, 3 batting titles and had to repeat two levels? And never got above A ball before becoming Rule 5 eligible? What else do you have to do to get promoted?

I don’t know about leading the division with all the defensive lapses and offensive issues, but we would definitely be in our normal, “acquire a reliever” and hope for the best mode rather than selling Norris and JMart

Cleveland, Cardinal Nation would like to introduce you to Dexter Fowler. Never mind his abysmal defensive metrics the past two years, or even his horrid offensive stats the first 105 games this year, he just needs to be in a place he feels appreciated. And by trading for him, you will show him you appreciate him….
Not convinced?
Well, in center field, we have one Tommy PHam. He thinks the organization has disrespected him, and will be happy to move out of town to a real contender. He will be the best person on your team, just ask him. PLUS, he is cost controlled for several more years!!!
Well, if you’re told you have to play Fowler every day, for whatever reason, you know you are not putting your best team on the field.
Hard to convince everybody you are trying to win when you are not putting your best 9 on the field.
July 29, 2018 at 11:33 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #62982My belief is that we have two catchers in the organization that can take over for Yadi. You want them to progress every year. Yadi is blocking Kelly, and he will do so next year. Knizner should be promoted to AAA next year, but he is blocked by Kelly. We don’t have any SS prospects in our system that are “elite.”
Trade Kelly to the Rays, who are looking for a catcher next year.
Rays want a catcher and power hitting OF
with a catcher and power-hitting outfielder a good start to a package
Elite catcher that give them $10 million in savings (for a financially strapped club), heck, maybe Kelly brings back Franco (who is pretty far away from the majors) plus a prospect like Beeks by himself…
The Cardinals have to start learning to trade from areas of depth to build a club capable of contending.
