Now, if we want to talk about the Cardinals front office and their inability to learn…
    Commitment to Fowler?

And the club’s decision makers have recommitted to struggling right fielder Dexter Fowler

Whoever made that decision needs to be fired. What is the point of maximizing infield defense if you are going to minimize outfield defense?

Things were best when they spot started Fowler. At this point he is a 1 tool player. He runs slightly above average. If he can get on base.

I guess its lack of hustle when I see him “running” after doubles and not getting to some fly balls.

The renewed commitment to Fowler will go on the shelf for a while. He evidently fracture his foot tonight and his headed to the DL.

What are the odds of both Pham and Fowler breaking a foot in successive days???? Ozuna needs to be very careful in today’s game. As much as I am not a Fowler fan, you never like to see one of your players hit the pines due to a broken bone. I would venture a guess though that the Cardinals are going to be very very very careful in not rushing Dexter back to active duty too soon. I wonder if the team’s insurance policy kicks in with this kind of a high $$ player injury???

Is there anybody on the like side? Maybe in Chicago.

If Fowler gets to .200 for the season… I’ll eat my 60’s Cardinal bobble head.

That is crazy. Pham’s came from getting hit by a pitch, which is an unusual way to get a broken foot.

Dexter has had a nightmare season, and this really tops it off. He seemed to be regaining his batting eye too, and was getting back into a bit of a groove. He even more than any of us will no doubt be thrilled to see the calendar roll over to 2019 this winter.

Fowler was saying after the game that he was just starting to come around. Oh yeah? Last 7 games = 20 ABs 7Ks .150BA .150 SLG, That’s not really coming around even for a .180 hitter. What a loser… “coming around” and what a joke. Who the heck does he think he’s fooling?

From what I heard about Mo’s comments, he was fooling Mo!!!

Lets cut to the chase here. How bad is the injury? Anybody have any idea how long Fowler will be lost now? Perhaps the rest of the season?

Either way, this is Bader and O’Neill’s big chance to win a spot in 2019.

This should help keep Jose Martinez off the infield (i hope). 4th outfielder is better than spot starts at 1B.

According to this article, he may be lost for the rest of the year:
    Fowler out for year?

Let’s hope Bader & O’Neill do so exceptionally well the rest of the year, the Cardinals don’t even think of naming Fowler a starter next year…

This is probably the best thing that could’ve happened to prevent the front office from sabotaging the team for the rest of the season.

Though could his contract almost force us to make him a starter, or maybe O’Neill and Bader are auditioning so that this offseason Mo will trade them for…something…well in his mind…

Well, that was what was happening this year. And it likely cost us several games. But the front office has to ask themselves, after two and most likely three years of missing the playoffs, would they rather make the playoffs or play a guy based on his contract?

Which sends the message to the team you are trying to win, play guys who hustle all the time, or play a guy with terrible defensive metrics, that shows up late and leaves early on game day, simply because he makes as much as 30 rookies?

Always hate to see a guy get injured, but at least this will stop Mo/BDW from their latest efforts at shooting themselves in the feet, one toe at a time.

Putting Fowler in the lineup everyday was Mozeliak looking to move up in the draft order.

Off-target comment, Ny. We get your Fowler dislike, as you remind us multiple times each day, but the Cards are not tanking.

Perhaps they are trying to salvage some of Fowler’s trade value for the off-season, rather than selling at the basement.

Look at his 2017 through July, and compare that to August and September, when he had a team-best .991 OPS.

In Dexter’s defense, when you play the game you can tell if you are “coming around”, and the results may not show it right away. It’s just a sense you have, where you are picking the ball up better, staying back a little more, feeling some confidence return, and have probably had that same sense before and it was the prelude to getting back into a positive routine.

Now we will never know for sure, but I understand Fowler’s comment. There are times where the ball seems like it is on you before you can react. Then there are times where it is almost like the ball is teed up for you, and it’s right there where you clearly see it and can put a good swing on it.

Carpenter is in one of those latter phases right now.

I know that there are some who only want to believe that Fowler is “COMING AROUND”. Wishing and hoping that he will start hitting and hearing that he’ll revert back to ’17 or ’16 or whatever is just painful.

What does one expect him to say???? That he feels that he’s not COMING AROUND?

If the team is trying to win this season, why play someone who is still batting .180 in AUGUST. It isn’t for his defense. Is it to have him show a great September…. so as to up his trade value? The team has bent over backwards to keep Dexter around, so if he does start to hit in September, why would they need trade value because they then wouldn’t think of trading him.

You can compare whatever makes your point, Fowler just isn’t what he was advertised as. There are so many things he isn’t that some wrote that he would be. You know it, I know it, Mozeliak knows it…. you and he just won’t admit to it.

I don’t want to keep Dexter around for two months out of the season, hoping he warms up in August and September. You lose too many games in April-June/July waiting for him to warm up. When you miss the playoffs by three or fewer games, those losses matter.

The only way the Cardinals should entertain bringing him back next year is if they are very clear he is competing with the other outfielders for playing time.

Production matters, the size of your contract does not.

It’s sports, it is supposed to be about competition.

If Fowler has a problem with competing for a position every day, he can request to be traded (though nobody will take him). And then, at that point, you have to release him.

But Fowler is clearly not part of our future, and the Cardinals should not tie up a roster space with him in the offseason.

It would seem odd that Fowler would have fallen off such an extreme cliff, at least with the bat. I would say that he should be given a shot next year, maybe not as the absolute starter but there’s simply too much money invested to not let him take a chance. If O’Neill or Bader or Garcia come in and are just too good to not start, then you’ve got an expensive bench bat. But I still think he’s got a .260/.360/.400 type bat and that’s enough to fill in for when injuries hit or pinch hit, at the very least. If not platoon start with a better defender.

Do you think that Fowler would be around if he didn’t have that massive contract? A .175 hitter?
Mo panicked because he had to add a CF and a lead-off guy. He and his agent fooled Mozeliak. Now I guess we have to live with it because Mozeliak isn’t going to admit his folly. He even directed Schlitz to play him every day.

Mozeliak should be gone soon after our last game of ’18.

Why? Is Mo taking a fall vacation? He isn’t going to be fired at the end of the season no matter how often you assert it.
