Instead, he gets erased by the DP
If Carpenter had been running, he could have been on 2nd
What do you guys think is/are the reasons for this team not striking out the alarming rate they were?
No Fowler/Pham, an actual hitting coach…
9 hits should have scored more than two runs in 5 innings, especially with one being a homer.
But 8 of them were singles, and only one inning had more than two hits…
After giving up a leadoff double, Flaherty escapes thank to a DP
Gyorko comes through with an RBI single. 2-0
Yadi and JMart follow with singles. Yadi somehow makes it to 3rd when JMart’s single to short squibs past the SS
Carpenter hits one out! 1-0 in the 5th
Flaherty bounces one across the plate and gets the K
Pirates have 1st and 2nd with nobody out in the third after a leadoff single and HBP
Cardinals unable to take advantage of Flaherty’s infield single in the 3rd
Cardinals unable to move Ozuna over
Ozuna laces a ground ball into left for a leadoff single in the second
The game is free on MLB TV for those out of market
Both Cardinals and Bucs go down in order in the first.
Bader caught the first two Pirates fly balls. Flaherty got a K for the third out.
Nice to see Bader and JMart joking around in the outfield
August 5, 2018 at 11:21 am in reply to: What is wrong with Dexter Fowler and what should be done? #64129I don’t want to keep Dexter around for two months out of the season, hoping he warms up in August and September. You lose too many games in April-June/July waiting for him to warm up. When you miss the playoffs by three or fewer games, those losses matter.
The only way the Cardinals should entertain bringing him back next year is if they are very clear he is competing with the other outfielders for playing time.
Production matters, the size of your contract does not.
It’s sports, it is supposed to be about competition.
If Fowler has a problem with competing for a position every day, he can request to be traded (though nobody will take him). And then, at that point, you have to release him.
But Fowler is clearly not part of our future, and the Cardinals should not tie up a roster space with him in the offseason.
Well, the Cardinals were aware of the problem, had Statcast information available to them, and they traded for him anyway. That’s an indictment of the front office.
They missed out on Stanton, felt compelled to get Ozuna (because they lacked a power bat) and are paying the consequences.
Sounds like the only solution is shoulder surgery, but that would mean Ozuna missing next year, in which case the trade is a total disaster.
I just don’t think the Cardinals front office is very good at negotiating.
Man, we need Carp in the middle of the order.
Nope. We’ve tried that four years running. It doesn’t work. Let him hit leadoff, and get 30+ extra bats per year. Plus, it gives the team energy to start with a lead on the first batter of the game…
At the time of the Holland signing it seemed like one of the best closers in the game was falling into the Cardinals lap.
He had a 6.38 ERA and 1.333 WHIP in the second half of last year. There were plenty of warning signs on Holland.
The Cardinals did what they often do, which is create a void that forces them into making bad free agent decisions.
They were going into spring training with Gregerson as their stated closer. Everybody knew that wasn’t going to work.
So, once again, NOT AN UPGRADE, but rather filling a void.
Well, Dexter Fowler is now on the DL, so there’s a chance.
I think “team chemistry” is a trailing indicator,
I agree that it is usually a trailing indicator. However, if someone grates on teammates, it may be better for overall team chemistry to remove them.
Kind of like companies remove employees who are bad apples in the workforce every day.
I forgot to mention the removal of Matheny in my original post as a contributor to the mood in the clubhouse lifting…
I also view the Post-Dispatch to be the unofficial PR team for the Cardinals, so there’s that…

Well, that was what was happening this year. And it likely cost us several games. But the front office has to ask themselves, after two and most likely three years of missing the playoffs, would they rather make the playoffs or play a guy based on his contract?
Which sends the message to the team you are trying to win, play guys who hustle all the time, or play a guy with terrible defensive metrics, that shows up late and leaves early on game day, simply because he makes as much as 30 rookies?
If the team doesn’t use some of that dry powder this or next offseason, I dunno when they ever would.
They’ve had that dry powder for years, and never use it on upgrades
They didn’t trade anything that was important to this season but also didn’t acquire anything that I would consider to be important. The only thing they seemed to accomplish was to free up playing time for some prospects.
I wish they would have tried to acquire someone with a higher upside than what they did.
Totally agree with these three statements.
