Reports this AM Luke G. will start season on DL. Barring another injury looks like Mayers makes the team and the roster is set.
I realize it would require a 40 man roster move, not a decision I am saying I would make. But with Kelly not hitting this spring and the recent love being shown to Pena, is starting to look like a possibility that could happen.
Looking at the 40 man roster, if no one ends on the 60 day DL coming out of spring, and a move would need to made to free up a spot, I would list Valera as the most likely at risk.
Regarding Texascard’s last 2 posts. I have really been impressed with Weaver’s progress expecting a big year from him.
And I am starting to wonder if Pena might earn the back up spot and they let Kelly go get some playing time at AAA.
I am not for it, but I can see a path where they keep Voit as a pinch hitter in STL and let Bader play everyday at AAA knowing he is a phone call away if someone goes down for a period of time. With 3 starting OFs who have played CF they could just keep Martinez around for the start on someone’s occasional day off.
From winter warmup sound like the want 13 man staff if you asked me the bench 4 guys I would list Kelly, Garcia, Martinez either or of Voit/Bader
Memphis should be really good again. Thanks for starting this thread a few thoughts:
1. Could see Mercado and/or Arozarena having to repeat AA to get their playing time.
2. Hope Gant is good enough to help the big league bullpen.
3. Two key members of 2017 Memphis team Valera and Mejia seem destine for utility roles.
4. Could see Helsley competing for a rotation spot at AAA.
5. Agree with above, expect to see Arturo Reyes on the AAA staff
6. The AA rotation will be loaded: Helsley, Hicks, Woodward, Fernandez, JonesI never did hear what the arm injury was that shut down Junior Fernandez Palm Beach season. When he was in Brian’s report as attending mini camp in January I was hoping a ST invite would indicate he was recovered and ready to start season. Guess will need to wait and see if he just did not make the list or if he is missing because he was not ready for early workload.
I found it interesting Alcantara went right to #1 on the Marlins prospect list. Really puts the variances organization to organization of quality and depth of systems in view.
Along those lines saw a comment I believe during the Stanton Yankees deal that if the Yankees and Marlins system were combined for a top 30, it would be made up of 22-25 Yankees.
Makes me wonder how high a Hudson or a Hicks would show up in being ranked if not in such a deep of system.
I have kind categorized the trade potential of the prospects into buckets and look at these deals with Os, Rays, or Blue Jays on what bucket and how many from which bucket would I be willing to offer. For pitcher buckets:
Reyes in the top level alone – do not see a current scenario where this bucket gets touched.
Next bucket: Flaherty, Weaver, Hudson, Hicks
Another step down: Fernandez, Hensley, Gomber, Woodford
For outfielders I kind of leave them all in one bucket with O’Neil being considered ahead of the rest of Bader, A Garcia, Arozarena, Mercado. Kind of leaving Carlson out of this focus on ready or 1 year away guys.
For a Manny M. 1 year rental I would be fine with combo of 2 prospects 1 OF from the bucket not named O’Neil and 1 pitcher from next bucket below Reyes group. If it takes 3 prospects involving 2 pitching prospects I would want them both to come from the last bucket to go with an OF.
Tampa would be different in I would see major league talent (Grichuk, Kelly, Jedd G, Sam T.) being in play lumped with combo of prospects depending on what combo of the closer, Archer, or Evan L. are involved.
