So Alcantara comes in to pitch in relief, couple of potential reasons:

    1. Hicks approach of limiting innings
    2. Being groomed for a need in StL

When I saw his name in box score flipped on milbtv. It was interesting he was pitching out of the stretch with no one bases. True reliever approach. Leads me to guess being groomed as reliever need versus just limiting innings.

Any idea why AA Alcantara start turned into a bullpen start?

Odd the Cardinsls did not challenge the poor call at second. Flowers was clearly safe.

Can someone think of the rationale of when this was planned connected to it needing the 26th roster spot. I am for larger rosters but can not follow the line of thought that said this would be a place it is needed.

If they make a traditional move I would expect Gant called up. Already on the 40 man scheduled to start tonight at AAA so well rested.

But if they are considering a more out of the box move to make statement and hopefully fix the problem I wonder if an off the 40 man move of a guy like Hudson, Flaherty, or Alcantara might be in play.

All three are at innings point in the year that being asked to pitch a high stress inning over every 2 or 3 days might be safer on their arms then piling up more innings as a starter in the minors. Since all three will likely be on the 40 man roster next year as long as they stay in the majors the rest of the year it does not really burn options, however would in Hudson and Flaherty cases tie up A 40 man spot sooner than needed.

Woodford with a strong 8 inning outing tonite. Nice to see, his hits and walks had been up and his SO down of late. Was thinking he had hit a wall. He is putting together a rather quiet very solid year at age 20 in high A.

7 th inning went k- k- ground out for a Flaherty.

Approaching 100 pitches likely done for the day 2 singles and 1 walk no base runner beyond first base. Had the curve, slider, and fastball all working well.

Rainer announcer said it best. Something along the lines of the cardinals $2M bonus looks like it is going to pay them back well.

Last time out for Hicks was 5 innings 50 pitch outing. Tonight 5 scoreless on 60 pitches and he is pulled. Really protecting his pitch count. Been excellent his last several starts.

Waited to see who was his long relief tonight. Martinez replaced him assume Helsley might be on his way to AA to replace Hudson. Of course we better wait and see as I have been projecting Helsley promotion multiples times without it actually happening.

Hicks started instead of Helsley at PB. He has been excellent thru 4 innings so far.

Thought it was odd to see him spend the entire game in the bullpen last night. He usually will be in dugout on his rare off days.

Also I thought it was interesting that the game shots would pan to him after Kelly threw out the runner and made nice blocks of the ball in the dirt. Assumed the tv crew was hoping to catch a moment of support or open up the conversation for the announcers. However it appeared he was not even paying attention to field only chatting up teammates. The tv team did not get the opening they were trying to lead into.

In addition on Hicks only 51 pitches 6 ground outs no walks. Has to be his most efficient use of pitches this year.

Memphis roster move, Huffman assigned to state college assume he never reports just a roster holding area until they can work out a move for him to land in AAA.

Yes assume it would be Reyes for AAA Sunday if no other moves are made today. Do not recall him being stretched out much in his rehab starts. Might be almost like a bullpen start if he does go.

Palm Beach game notes listed Woodford today. If he is coming off of DL gives PB 6 starters. If AAA fills Gonazles turn from AA and not their own bullpen, this could be opening for Helsley to AA.

Sam T had like 1 appearance in like 2 weeks. The guys body of work this year deserves more high leverage opportunities.

Arizona takes on all remaining salary for the year ~$5M and give up there #4, #15, and a guy NR but made a top 20 in the DSL list. Not for sure how deep the dbacks system is but seems like a lot for a rental.

Wonder what Lynn could or will bring.

Interesting AA alignment in the OF tonight. Anthony Garcia in cf – Mercado in LF – Arozarena in RF.

Wonder if showcasing for scouts. Mercado got turned around in left and recovered to make a jumping catch at the wall his spikes got stuck for a brief moment in the chain fence and had a Spider-Man moment against the wall.

I think Mayers and Gant both have a better path to the bigs from the bullpen.

On top of all the names listed above would think Gallen, Hudson, Gomber as candidates to end the year at AAA and or ready to start there next year.

Helsley has earned the chance at AA this season and Woodford and Junior Fernandez are on track to be ready for AA to begin 2018.

We thought AA rotation was loaded this season. Could see a rotation to start 2018 with 5 top 20 organizational prospects. The 3 mentioned here with Alcantara repeating and depending on how Hicks finishes at PB. He will have a chance to join them in Springfield.

As far Mercado mlb ranking, will expect him much higher when they do a mid season update. For now it appears if someone losses eligibility they simple move everyone behind that position up 1 and add a new #30. Much like how Hensley got added a few weeks ago and is now #29. Expect both to be much higher when the list get refresh.

As far as Brian’s list, I am sure I am bias but this system sure seems much deeper than it is being given credit for. You have 8 or 9 guys who are showing up on varies top 100 lists. Maybe after Reyes not a lot top 25 guys. But a lot to choose from and much of it at the AA and AAA level already.
