Flaherty’s 113 pitches for Memphis on Wednesday rules him out for Sunday. Looks like this has Wainwright coming off DL. Maybe Flaherty for early next week in place of CMart.
I will leave it to guys a lot sharper than me to figure out the rule and how it is interpreted. Brian I will call out around page 13 of your prospect guide you have Montero listed as 2018 as year to have to protect.
That is why I had this season in my mind as a key decision year. I hope we find we have another year. Because with as many teams tanking as there is I am sure it would be more than padres we would need to worry about in a rule 5 situation.
Assume Brebbia is bullpen support until the day Flaherty would need activated when he takes the start. If not Brebbia could also go back to a 4 man bench
I guess with off day Monday the current staff could go on normal rest and another starter would not be due until Saturday.
Still would like to see Flaherty in the Mets series.
The #STLCards have put Adam Wainwright on the DL with elbow inflammation. John Brebbia up again. Jack Flaherty presumably will replace him when it is Wainwright’s turn to pitch Tuesday.

With the deeper dive Brian did with 3 lead off walks and 2 sets of 2 walks bunched together in same inning. Back to start 1 when he walked something like 5 or 7 in one inning. Remember last year listening to a few of his innings. He did seem to hit some real wild streaks when he could not find the zone.
Hopefully just all part of a big talented guy trying to get his mechanics together and develop consistency.
Need the investment to pay off in the longer term.

Pham out of the lineup again, hopefully just taking it easy protecting his injury and nothing serious. Give it to Molina for being off to a good start but really do not like him in 2nd hole. He and Carp in the lead off spot really clogs up the base paths if they do get on. Do like seeing a Flower dropped down in the lineup.
An odd Oviedo stat. Derek had a tweet that says he threw 62 strikes out of 89 pitches. Yet he walked 5. Obviously the 5 guys that walk account for 20 balls. Seems odd that he would have only thrown 7 balls total to the rest of everyone else he faced.
Mikolas stuff has been better than advertised. Better velocity, good movement, good off speed stuff. If he can avoid the mistakes that have went for long balls HRs over his first couple of starts he might end up being a valuable addition.
Might be time to get Sam T healthy and couple good outings under him and trade him for some value. Same approach as used with Valera and Lucas. Get something of value not requiring a 40 man spot. Recall Mo saying in spring training how they receive a lot of inquires from other clubs about Sam.
Hopefully his drop in velocity is knee and slide step related and not the signs of an arm injury.
The RR announcers have been on the milb.tv broadcast so far, Friday night they made the comment Memphis has to be one of the best AAA teams. To last night expanding that to best AAA team of all time. I am sure that is very subjective comments, probably goes into some of the rationalizing when you have been so beat down.
But I am hoping to listen in today with Flaherty being on his game to hear there reaction.
Memphis is loaded to start the season. I was wondering if that 91 win mark from 2017 could be exceeded. I think last year it was something like 62 players were used with all the roster moves. So a lot can happen over a long season and it does not look like at least offensively that they can count on a lot of reinforcements from AA this year when moves are needed.
Not the whole list sounds like that will given on Monday. But the attached article drops a few names all consistent with Dennis’ list above.
My plan for 4 wins out of 6 games on this opening road trip is going to require a 4 game win streak to accomplish.
Really like what I saw out of Weaver in spring training. Hopefully he brings the same to the mound tomorrow.

According to a Danny Mac tweet this start now goes to Wacha with Weaver Sunday. Leaves Flaherty, Miles M. and CMart for the brewers in Milwaukee. And then Wacha for home opener.
This time last year I threw out the prediction for guys taking big step forward. I listed Flaherty, Gallen, Hicks, Denton. Denton was the big miss in that list for me. I still think back hearing instructional league and lower minor managers talk about the ball sounding different off his bat. Hopefully in 2018 he can make better contact and start showing some power.
