The Cards certainly have their share of cheap young talent, whether it’s in the minors or not. I’m sure it’s been done somewhere, but it would be interesting to see the production from players <25 the last five years or so. I’d bet St Louis would fare very well in that category, which is probably as good or better a reflection on the farm system strength than Law or BP or whomever’s prospect rankings. Sickels seems to get it, but the others fall in love with the high velocity arms, big boomers or “toolsy” guys who turn out to be major busts.
Good stuff, Derek. Ryan seems like a well spoken kid who really is thankful for the chance he has. Here’s hoping he’s able to help the big league team in some capacity for years to come.
I’m waiting for the weekend to renew my MLB.tv sub, since hopefully they’ll have it discounted. Here in PA, the only blackout games are the Pirates and Indians. Easy enough for me to get away from though, since I live 5 minutes from New York for mobile access.
Anyway, Hammel is bad, Weaver is good…hopefully they play to their appropriate talents and the Cards win going away.
Lots of good in that game last night. Probably the only downside was Pham. He looks like he could use a night off. Wouldn’t mind seeing Bader in CF and O’Neill in RF tonight.
Mikolas has been a revelation this year. This rotation might be a lot of fun with guys saying “anything you can do, I can do better” all season long. Get Marp going and Ozuna too and we might have a team.
With the home run in his last at bat, Carpenter is now sitting at a 101 wRC+ for the season. Quick turnaround from his woeful start to the season to just about average.
The Galveston Grinder with another three hit game…his average is now up to .210. Good to see the hits start coming for Marp. This offense needs him clicking.
The .900 OPS Martinez has a lot of value even if his defense is subpar. At .800, he still has value but probably not more than a “normal” Carpenter at 1B.
Mud, I’m flattered but the Orioles would probably demand more than just my services in return for Machado. However, for the good of the fan base I would accept the trade without invoking my NTC and wish the Birds the best. ??
Not that I’m advocating trading these guys willy nilly, but what kind of yield do you think we might get from O’Neill and Hicks right now? They seem to be “it” guys that a team might value highly enough to make a centerpiece in a deal for a guy like Machado. Maybe O’Neill, Hicks and a lower level guy like Oviedo or O’Reilly if they like a higher floor guy…
Maybe Marp took mud’s musings to heart. Since he got the seal of confidence, he’s hitting .400/.444/.640. Does it count as a mudville tear™ yet?
I like Mercado a lot. If he can become a reasonably patient hitter and maintain his power going forward, he should have a future in MLB somewhere. His defense and speed should play in CF.
Pham is certainly good and should continue to be relatively good but unfortunately his early career injuries are going to cost him a lot of money. If the guy was 25 I’d be all over trying to sign him for 5+ years but at 30, he’ll have to take his arb money and hope his skills don’t deteriorate by the time he’s a free agent.
Not that we should feel too sorry for someone who will still probably make 10 times or better more what most of us will make in our entire careers over the next four years…
This series with these pitching matchups should be an easy two of three or sweep for the Cards. Things have not been easy of late though. Here’s hoping the bats continue to get enough done to back the rotation and the bullpen doesn’t blow it.
How often do teams hit on their first round picks? And what is considered a successful pick?
I would argue that even though last year’s draft wasn’t great, ’15 and ’16 were good drafts even if the first round picks haven’t been stars.
Is that a recent photo of Reyes? If so, he looks much skinnier.
Also, still wondering if that 100-120 innings will be the total at the MLB level?
Notice that after running wild on the “bad defensive catcher” on Thursday night, Colorado Springs neither stole or even attempted to steal a base in either half of the double-header last night? Maybe something to do with the pitchers?
I’m as frustrated about the offense as anyone, but it’s pretty unrealistic to expect Carpenter, Fowler and Ozuna to continue to OPS 200 points below their career OPS the rest of the year. Throw in Wong’s bad start and I still believe the pieces are there for an above average offense the rest of the season.
Same with the bullpen. There’s no reason not to expect an average to above unit by mid to late summer from the arms available.
The starting pitching is fine and some guys will move forward, some back. Getting Cmart back and Reyes up will be good. You think the Phillies score 7 runs with one of them pitching yesterday, regardless of defense?
Point is, this team looked to be an upper 80s/low 90s win team. Before the injuries and the major slump from the bats, it looked like they might be at least that or maybe more. Now it’s looking like another 85 win season. Such is the nature of small samples. I expect the pendulum to swing back in the next couple months.
Welp, that stunk. I’m glad I was busy this afternoon and couldn’t witness the meltdown. Holland has to be demoted in the pecking order but the pitchers just flat out need to get it done. Holland is making huge money and at this point it looks like we would have been better off paying Trevor Rosenthal this year (not a typo). He needs to get his act together.
