Pham doesn’t seem to be shy about calling out teammates who aren’t doing their job. Wonder if Ozuna will catch his ire tonight?
Pham walk, Carpenter single…then double play, and the usual groundout for Ozuna. Wasted chance there.
So the reports were that Reyes is scheduled for 100-120 innings this year. Will that include these rehab starts, any simulated games he pitched before, or is that MLB only?
Gscott…I’m with you on the bullpen. I’m basically in “hope Reyes’ return makes the pen better” mode but I’m not holding my breath. I’m not really sure it will do anything anyway as they’ll probably bump Flaherty back to Memphis then.
Tonight’s game could be a sneaky win for the Cards although that’s dependent on Wacha showing up. Eventually the bats have to come around…right?? :-/
Flaherty needs to be more economical with his pitches, but if he can do that he will be a fine #2-3 type starter for a while. He looked good against the Twins, just ran out of gas his last inning.
A starting 5 of Martinez-Reyes-Flaherty-Mikolas-Weaver sounds pretty solid for the next several years. Of course we still have Wacha and guys like Hudson, Gant, maybe even Hicks in the mix too. If we had a top lefty it would be great but the rotation is far from this team’s issue and won’t be for a while unless there’s a big run of injuries.
Ozuna up thrice with the bases loaded the last two nights and one RBI groundout to show for it. Sad.
Also, Pugs…the return for Yelich was the #18 ranked prospect, #75, a recent top 100 and a back end guy who had good numbers in A ball. So it would have been something like Flaherty (or Reyes), Kelly, Bader, Hicks for equivalent prospects from the Cards’ system.
Luke Weaver was excellent tonight. Pretty much everyone else stunk. You’re just not going to win many games scoring 2 runs.
Yelich would have cost us Flaherty, Kelly, and probably at least one more prospect we wouldn’t have wanted to give up. Probably two. Not saying it may not have been an ok deal but it’s not like they could be had for equal value in a trade.
Gyorko with the single brings up Carp with the chance to be a hero. ’13-16 Carp would break a pitcher’s heart by poking a two run double into the LF corner right here. Let’s hope that one shows up tonight.
Another poor at bat by Ozuna with the bases loaded. Maybe next year he’ll get it together when big $$ are at stake.
Realistically I expected this to be a loss…but to be right there all game without the ability to score a stinking run, then watch our bullpen ruin it…is a bit much. Hicks is one of the worst relievers on the team and his luck is bound to run out big time. Would like to see him get seasoning in the minors at some point this year.
Luke did all we could really ask if him tonight. Only the one big mistake and was pretty efficient. Just hard luck with his offense not showing up…but that seems to be the norm lately. Hopefully they can get to Velasquez this inning.
Weaver blinks first and allows the solo homer. He’s hunkered down and struck the next two out though.
Reyes won’t be back before Kelly’s DL stint is over, so once Kelly is back I’m sure Baron will be free to be dropped for Reyes.
That’s disgusting. Thank goodness there is a lot of depth in the upper levels of the system but catcher is not the place most of it resides.
I hear ya, 14NyquisT. Not much going on since the Renteria days. Paul has been solid with the bat at every level, which gives me hope he can sustain it. His defense even is being rated better this year than last. He’s on a pace for a 6 WAR season right now. That’s just tremendous.
Meanwhile, a couple of the “others” right now…
Aledmys Diaz: .216/.273/.431 (85 wRC+). FG seems to like his defense this year, oddly. He’s still a low walk, low strikeout guy. I worried this was going to be a mistake trade. It still could be (he’s running a .200 BABIP) but early returns are not pointing that way.
Allen Cordoba: On the 60 day DL for San Diego.
Brian, I guess eventually they should win their share of series against the good teams, but it’s hard to ignore the pitching matchups this weekend. Friday looks decent with Wacha against Eflin and Sunday might be winnable with Flaherty on the mound. Arrieta and Nola will be tough. There’s always hope though. Maybe Carp will break out against his old buddy Jake.
Dejong in the last calendar month: .270/.381/.483 (139 wRC+), 12.4 BB%, 22.9 K%. Paul seems like a bright guy who can figure things out on the go. If his plate discipline numbers are for real going forward, he’s going to be a real force in this lineup.
This looks like a tough series for the Cards, especially without their leader and now that Martinez is going to be out as well. A split sounds like a positive result, if it can be accomplished.
In the recent games I’ve been able to see, it looks like Carp has been going the other way more. Statistically I don’t know if that’s true but he’s had some oomph on shots to left that just haven’t found gaps. This offense badly needs him to go on a mudville tear.
