I don’t see the two as comparables as all.
I was referring to the injury aspect. May definitely had more upside hence the higher cost.
I have had that same thought Pugs. Matt Shaw would look good in a Cardinal uniform and would be our everyday 3B on opening day. The Cards and Cubs haven’t done a major trade since they did Durham for Sutter but I don’t see why they shouldn’t. Bloom just did a trade with the Brewers so why not the Cubs?
Everyone assumes that going outside the organization means signing an expensive free agent but trades are still allowed. I have been thinking about a trade for Ryan McMahon of the Yankees to keep 3B warm for Jesus Baez but I like the Matt Shaw idea even better. I don’t know if I would do Herrera for Shaw straight up but I might could be talked into that.
The Brewers did make it to the NLCS last year. Thankfully they vanquished the Cubs but could not get past the Dodgers. They need to take the next step this year.
If the World Series is the Brewers vs Rays or Guardians Manfred will be beside himself, which is what I am hoping for.
It is hard to read much into these press conferences. They aren’t designed to give out too many organizational secrets but there are some facets of this roster that are glaring.
We have way too many C-1B-DH types. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Herrera dealt.
I also don’t think our starting 3B on opening day 2027 is currently in the organiztion. The logical thing to do would bring in a veteran stopgap until Baez is ready.
1. Wetherholt finishes 2nd in ROY voting thus earning a full year of service time and earning the Cardinals an extra draft pick.
I might get this partially correct. JJ may finish 2nd but there will be no extra pick. I got the rules wrong.
2. May, Romero, Noot, and Stanek are all traded in late July.

4. The Cardinals force Herrera to catch two or three times a week, which leads to chronic knee pain and him putting up a .695 OPS.
He didn’t have knee pain but his OPS was only .735, which was much worse than 2025. I still think his catching messes up his hitting.
5. Velazquez starts out hot in April but the league eventually figures him out and his OPS plummets. Church becomes an everyday player and puts up a modest but productive .720 OPS for the year.
Kind of correct. Velazquez started out hot then faded although it wasn’t in April because he got shafted from his great ST performance. Church did become an everyday player but his OPS was only .654.
Pugs, I have never fashioned myself as a big fan of the Padres but for the next three days I will be robustly rooting for the guys in brown and yellow. A repeat of the 1984 NLCS would be fine with me. I keep imagining the ball going through the legs of Leon Durham.

2027 will be an interesting season with how the Cardinals approach it. When you factor in the upcoming CBA mess and the fact that the Cardinals are a conservative, prudent, and frugal organization it would not be shocking for them to have another runway year, although I think they should be a little more aggressive. Not a lot but at least a little.
Perhaps another runway year will be good enough for them to move the needle forward and maybe get a wild card spot but a lot of things would have to go right if the plan is to go internal only once again. I would view it as a mistake if the plan is to just settle for another 75-80 win season but perhaps my timeline and theirs do not align.
It took the Cardinals a long time to finally let go of the rope and undertake a proper rebuild. I am sure it wasn’t an easy decision since they had been in trying to have winning seasons for the previous 25 years or so. It has recently occurred to me that it might also be a difficult decsion to move on from the rebuild. There will be a temptation to make sure everythiing is exactly right before taking the plunge to try to win again but it has been my experience that the perfect conditions never exist. Sometimes you just have to take a chance that you are ready.
I just hope the paralysis of analysis doesn’t overcome the organization and we are still debating this topic in 2029 or 2030.

They might be able to if there isn’t another trade deadline sell off but a lot of things would have to go right.
And for the record, these are my goals. This is a message board so I assume opinions are allowed. I have no idea what the Cardinals are going to do.
Making a distinction between minimum salary and minimum payroll is weird. Leave it to MLB to make things as complex as possible.
The Reds aren’t emulating the Brewers, which is their problem. They have been trying to emulate the Angels and Rockies by refusing to do a rebuild and the results speak for themselves.
Didn’t Castellini own part of the Cardinals at one time?
I view 2026 as a success because while the payroll cratered the W-L record did not and we rebuilt the farm.
Now despite all of the upcoming excuses regarding the CBA and players still needing more runway, etc.. blah blah blah, the team needs to make improvements for 2027. Does that mean going on a wild spending spree? Of course not but we need to strive for an 85 win team next year, whatever that entails.

Bling, the thing about Bloom is that there is some unknowns about him. We know that he is very capable of building a top notch farm system. He did it in Boston and helped do it in Tampa. What we don’t know is can he build a championship caliber team once the rebuild is over. He was part of building some good teams in Tampa but we wasn’t in the big chair. He was in the big chair in Boston but they didn’t have the success at the big league level they wanted although some of that was probably not his fault.
The bottom line is that we really don’t what his next steps will be once he deems the rebuild to be over. It is my opinion that despite how good our farm system is he will have to bring in some players from outside of the organization if he wants us to have a legit chance of raising a 12th banner.
Pugs, I think Bernal is a keeper too but if someone offered me a windfall for him I would have to consider it because of Rainiel Rodriguez flying up the charts. Perhaps both of them could fit on a STL roster. We shall see.
