Well, it’s nice to have at least one team we can beat up on once in a while. But even that’s not a sure thing!
I too was still cutting my teeth as a fan at the start of the 70’s and Tanner was also mentioned anytime the Pirates were a topic, but he emerged in the late ’70’s. Murtaugh retired and stepped down as Pirates manager at the conclusion of the ’76 season thus avoiding the common ending by axe for managers, but he was associated with the Pirates going back to when the Pyramids were being constructed…Tanner was fired in ’85 and I’d forgotten that he managed in ATL for a while after being placed in the soup line by the Pirates.
Good points on Murtaugh, 1TD. And in those two World Series titles I believe his teams were underdogs. He would seem to be a fairly easy choice for the Hall.
And speaking of those Rockies – wow. I sat through two games yesterday and it was the worst bloodbath of “major league” baseball i have ever witnessed in person. The Rockies had 9 hits total in the two games; Detroit had double digits hits in each game. The Tigers played errorless ball while the Rockies committed five miscues.
Outscored 21-3, the Rox line scores were 2-5-3 and 1-4-2. They used a shortstop to pitch the ninth inning of game two. There were maybe 12,000 in the stands for game one, and were pushing it to have 2,000 in the nightcap.
One lame thing Hinch and the Tigers did was in game two with Detroit up 8-1 in the 8th the Rockies turned a double play on a “bang-bang” play at first. The Tigers challenged the call at first! I mean you are up 8-1 with six outs to get – don’t you want to just get this over and get on the plane to Dallas?
The call took awhile to review as it was that close, but they won the challenge. So now they have a runner on and one out, and go on to tack on three more runs.
Just a total embarrassment. They could fire Buddy Black, but at least they are realistic knowing that is the least of their problems.
I guess there is some Skenes drama going on in Pirate land. Just saw this regarding Skenes last start>

That physical description could have been how someone would have described what Lance Lynn looked like but he turned out ok. It’s all about expectations.
I was surprised it came from a media person who hosts Pirates pre game and post game on their broadcasts.
I have not heard anything about him having a sore elbow, or a sore anything. He might just be trying to figure out how to get guys out without throwing so hard, so as to preserve his good health. That would be a reasonable thing to do in his situation.
