Without one of their best hitters in Deniel Ortiz (IL), the Springfield Cardinals still are sending out a lineup tonight with only 1 guy whose season stats are below a .800 OPS – their number 9 hitter and catcher Ryan Campos at .778. Hitting is inflated in the Texas League, but still this is pretty incredible.

I saw Chase on the blurb above. Sure wish he could figure something out and get some traction. No power, no nothing. Is next year his last chance?

Bling, he’s Rule 5 eligible at the end of this season, but if he isn’t taken, he still has a few years of team control left.

He and Peete are the 2 guys competing with Scott/Church for the CF job of the future. I would love for Davis to win that competition because he has the most upside, but odds-wise, I might rate his chances right now as lowest of the four to win the job.

I have no idea if Davis is a realistic major league CF possibility.

Peete has higher upside than Chase Davis. Davis I think looks like the upside of 4th OFer at this point. If he turns out to even be the 4th OFer, I would be satisfied at this point. Davis smashes the ball into the ground at an extreme rate and he watches every pitch. He seems adamant to not make a change to his approach at this point.

Peete has the upside to be an average starting OFer. Peete has a lot of risk with his bat control but he hits the ball hard and can actually do damage since it is in the air at a good rate.

Doyle’s first inning: Three walks, three strikeouts, 31 pitches. Hit 100 mph more than once but several pitches were very high.

Doyle struck out 8 in 3-2/3 innings, but also walked 5. Not great to not go deep, but hopefully the pen will hold up and the offense will tack on some runs.

Most likely our long term starting CF is not in the organization yet.

We should remember that Josh Baez looked like a bust until 2025, which was his 5th year in the organization.

Looks like Springfield finished off the sweep. Good to see our baby Birds pummeling the Dodgers. Hopefully that continues at the big league level in coming years.

Coincidence that the new regime really took the reigns at the developmental level in 2025?

Trevor Condon? 6th ranked prospect. I wouldn’t see them trading for or paying a fa until they get a better feel for him. Same with Josiah Ragsdale. It’s not out of the question for Church to improve his bat enough to hold the position until one of those other guys is ready.

Condon is a long ways off. Ragsdale is a CFer in the same way Josh Baez is a CFer – in Minor League action only.

A top rated system doesn’t have to produce everything. It does have to produce excess in some areas to be traded for what is needed in other areas. And it takes quality to get quality. We will have to find out how well Bloom does at that part of the rebuild.

Condon is a long ways off.

I think they will try and get a feel for how long that might be before they spend assets on a cf. They already forked over a first round pick.

Agree Bling. I think we would love to produce everything on our own, but that’s probably an impossible ask. We have depth though at C and to some degree at middle infield and corner outfield that we could spare.

CF is not an immediate glaring hole. We have Church and Scott and neither is an embarrassment. Church has also hit a little better lately. We could just stick with what we have. We would likely stay below average, but we might get close to average if everything breaks right for Church.

It depends on what we are trying to achieve next year. If we are waiving the white flag on 2027 and declaring it another runway year then sure we can go with what we have. If we are wanting to incrementally boost the win total up to around 85-87 then that might require a different approach.

I am not advocating that we sign Tarik Skubal and trade for Aaron Judge but at some point we are going to have to try to move the needle. I would like to see 2027 be better than 2026 then 2028 be better than 2027. I don’t think that happens with going with internal players only.

I do think they would move the needle next year just with internal players. The team would get better as the season progresses and assets filter up. Especially so if the roster gets bolstered by a trade at some point.

A trade involving an external player I assume?

It can be a challenge for me sometimes to distinguish between what posters WANT the Cardinals to do versus what they think the team actually WILL do. 99% of the time, it seems, the former is more aggressive than the latter turns out to be.

The only potential downside in dreaming bigger is disappointment later on if it doesn’t play out.

P.S. I suspect that Bling’s most recent post will be the Cardinals’ game plan for 2027. Best case might be enough improvement by August 1 to be a mild buyer at the deadline instead of a seller as in recent years. If not, keep the target as 2028 and beyond. Some will grow increasingly impatient if the latter is what happens.

Watching the Memphis game tonight and I wonder why Austin Love is still on the team! First three batters reached base scoring two runs. His ERA before this inning was almost 8! I guess bringing him in with a five run lead was better than a closer game. He hasn’t pitched well the last couple of times I have seen him.
