McGreevy, Pallante, Leahy, Libby, and Dobbins will all be in the mix but I expect the Cardinals to bring in at least one starter from the outside. It could be a veteran on a cheap one year deal like they did with May or they may try to swing a trade for a younger MLB ready starter with years of control by giving up some catcher depth.
I would also expect Mathews to be in the mix. We should plan on having 7 or 8 starters ready to go. We were fortunate this year by having no injuries to the rotation but you certainly can’t count on that happening again.
August 7, 2026 at 10:53 am in reply to: St. Louis 2026 Game #116 thread – Friday, August 7 vs. Colorado Rockies #315503The Cub game yesterday was nauseating. I still get plenty of pleasure watching them lose. Unfortunately they are on a hot streak and will probably walz into KC this weekend and get a sweep. The Brewers had better keep their foot on the pedal.
With the Cards not really a realistic contender presently I find rooting for the Cubs to lose as one of my regular pastimes. Hopefully one of the Dodgers, Brewers, Braves, or Phillies will knock them out in the postseason.
Going into 2027 the Cardinals need to plug holes at 3B, LF, and CF. As has been mentioned they may not want to tackle all three with outside acquisitions therefore Jordan gets some 2027 runway. It is worth a shot I suppose but I am not sold that he is a long term option.
RHP Tink Hence cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the FCL Cardinals.

August 6, 2026 at 10:47 am in reply to: St. Louis 2026 Game #116 thread – Friday, August 7 vs. Colorado Rockies #315446According to Cot’s the highest paid player on the active roster is Pallante at $4M.
The Cardinals CBT payroll is now $108M, which is 28th in MLB. Only the Marlins and Guardians are lower.

Was Bloom not involved with Rule 5 in December 2025?
It won’t happen before the end of this season but the Cardinals need to clean up the catching logjam sooner than later. Not only Herrera, Pages, Crooks, and Bernal but Raniel is going to be entering the conversation very soon. I see him in Memphis next year.
August 5, 2026 at 5:01 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2026 Game #115 thread – Wednesday, August 5 at New York Yankees #315378Cubs got the sweep against the Dodgers today. I don’t like that. I was counting on LA knocking the Cubs down a peg or two.
That OF in Springfield should be exciting to follow, especially offensively.
On another note there have been several times the last few weeks that I have confused Johnfrank Salazar with Jon Jon Gazdar. The names are just too similar. Hopefully Salazar finds a new home soon.
Right-hander Daniel Eagen (AA) and left-hander Sando Santana (AA) are two of three players heading back to St. Louis for Lars Nootbaar. Eagen ranked No. 13 for Arizona in The Athletic's top 20 prospects. Both considered top 30 in D-backs system.
Deal is pending medicals. https://t.co/QpTIuRZNua

So it looks like O’Brien, Burly, Herrera, Crooks, and Stanek are staying for now. Well Stanek for two more months.
Hence still needs to be moved.
Hence wasn’t on the active roster.
Ferguson will fill one of the two vacant active roster spots. Will still need to call up a position player from Memphis.
I guess Ferguson will take Jo Jo’s place in the pen. He is a rental so technically we were buyers! Ha!

We currently have 24 on the active roster so 2 players will need to be added, one pitcher and one position player.
Yeah I think they will wait a couple of weeks before bring Baez up.
We could see VS2 coming back up until then.
August 3, 2026 at 5:09 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2026 Game #113 thread – Monday, August 3 at New York Yankees #315136Scratch Noot from the lineup.
I will have Frias as my number 6 and Ragsdale at number 9.
Mo seems to be cleaning house out in Angel Land. I am glad to see someone finally talking some sense into Arte Moreno.
The Cubs have acquired 4 pitchers.
Kevin Gausman
Braxton Garrett
Ryan Zeferjahn
Clay HolmesI can’t really complain about this trade but if I were allowed one minor quibble it is that both new players are LH OF’s, which it seems like we always have a never ending supply of.
Since some outlets have the Brewers with the number 1 ranked farm system in MLB getting their number 11 and 13 prospects for a couple of mid level rentals does not seem bad to me.
I don’t see how it is physically possible to detest a team as much as the Cubs.
As Brian said, the player or players we get back in return will be here a lot longer than May or Jo Jo will be in Milwaukee. If May and Jo Jo help the Crew fend off the Cubs for the NLC title that is fine with me since we know we aren’t winning it anyway.
Who says you can’t trade within your division?
I applaud Bloom for sticking it to the Cubs by helping the Crew. Ha!
My point is that there are more pragmatic ways to address revenue disparity than going for a salary cap that will not happen. I mean I suppose shutting the game down will address the revenue gap since zero times zero equals zero but that is really shooting yourself in the foot.
A better solution is to tighten up the current CBT system. Make the tax penalties hurt. A first time payer pays 100% tax on any amount over the limit. No easing into it. Second time payer pays 150% tax. Third time payer pays 200%. Take away a draft pick each year a team goes over the limit starting with a first rounder. Eventually even a team like the Dodgers will reach the proverbial puke point.
I just don’t want to see a shutdown over something that has almost zero chance of happening. Take the existing system and make it tougher. There is a better chance of the MLBPA accepting that, along with a salary floor.
