I agree that we should prioritize defense but to be fair everyone on here complains when the ofense puts up one of those 3 hit zero run performances (this team can’t hit!). Sometimes you have to pick your poison.

I don’t think they are ready to do that. Until last night I figured Leahy was closer to the bullpen than Libby but then Leahy gives us 6 decent innings. They would have to think someone at Memphis is ready to step into the rotation. Mathews is getting better but I feel like they will give him more starts in Memphis. The trade deadline or an injury may force their hand.
It is an easy way to generate an extra couple hundred grand in profits without additional investment.
They might be able to do a soft sell and still get a wild card spot. Decrease expense and increase revenue. That is BDW’s kind of math.

I guess so. The Brewers, Guardians, and Rays aren’t considered to be in the wealthy category but they sure do have a lot of smart people running their operations.
I like the fact that the Cardinals shrank their payroll $40M from last year but got better as a team. Perhaps much better. I attribute it to a much smarter front office and a commitment to development. We are finally allocating our resources where they need to be.
Money is obviously a factor when it comes to success but it isn’t the only factor. Some teams are just poorly run teams. It wouldn’t matter how much money they spent they would still screw it up.
The other wrinkle is that if a salary floor is implemented for next season the Cardinals might be forced to give out a contract that they wouldn’t have otherwise. A lot of unanswered questions out there.
The Dodgers are one of the better teams in recent memory but they are not infallible. On four different occasions in the 9th inning of Game 7 the Blue Jays were within an inch of winning the series but it didn’t happen. The end result is what that matters but the point is that other teams can compete with them no doubt.
Not that it matters any longer but Miller was put bereavement list on Monday.
I noticed that after I had made that post but as you said it turned out to be a moot point.
The new CBA may alter the QA rules or completely get rid of them altogether so who knows?
Regardless I think it is a moot point because I think May will be traded before the August 3 deadline, along with others. While the Cardinals may still cling to a wild card spot at the deadline Bloom has given every indication that he sticking to the long range plan. Could he change his mind? Yes he could but until he does I am going to assume he is going to do what he has said.
We had better get something cooking soon because the Padres have the best closer in the game in Mason Miller. Once he enters a game the party is over.

Both of these articles are kind of long and wonky but some interesting ideas. The summary would be:
1. No hard cap but toughen the luxury tax penalties.
2. Create a real salary floor.
3. Pool all of the local tv revenues together.
4. Start arbitration earilier and raise the MLB minimum.
5. Set aside a small percentage of the profits when a team sells and put it in a fund for the players.

In 2019 Memphis had an OF hit 32 HR’s and struck out 159 times. The Cardinals ended up selling him a few months later for cash considerations. Hopefully things end up better for Baez than they did Adolis Garcia.

Bad news in MIL as the Brewers win 2-1 over the Indians. The winning pitcher of decision, Ashby, is now 10-0.
And he is a middle reliever. How odd is that?
We should also remember that we have been very lucky avoiding starter injuries and that could change.
I think about that a lot. While our minor league pitching has been riddled with injuries the big league staff has been very sturdy, so far. A few injuries could really put a squeeze on our lack of quality depth.
I look forward to seeing what Tre Richardson can do at Springfield. He has had a good season but time is running out for him.
