Nathan Church asks why he wasn’t mentioned! 😉

Ha ha Brian, sorry I was assuming Church would be back tomorrow, and be our center fielder. And Torres could have been sent down before Scott. But I like the current roster as constructed, at least as far as position players. It will be good that Scott can get regular at bats and work on his swing. The only other position player I’d like to see is Jordan.

I have said before that I thought we’d be sellers at the trade deadline. Now we may be buyers or neutral in that we may open up roster space and trade excess pieces and our additions may be from Memphis. Maybe do it would likely be given a qualifying offer, if they don’t try and extend him. And a May trade still might be possible if someone blows us away with an offer and call up Mathews, Mautz, or Dobbins. But very likely May stays put like Romero.

I see that Pomeranian is dosignated for assignment. Why not dfa Bruihl and add him?

They might think they have AAA guys to take alook at pretty soon. I think the preference is to flow the pipe rather than plug it up.

I still think we are sellers regardless of the standings. May and Jo Jo are going to go. Noot and O’Brien are likely to go. I don’t know if they would get radical enough to try to move Burly or Herrera.

Our trade deadline pickups are going to be promotions from Memphis. Mathews, Mautz, Gastelum, Rajcic, Hansen, and Baez will be on alert.

I would expect them to stand pat at the deadline. Relief options come from Memphis.

I don’t think they are going to be sellers when DeWitt can make a few hundred grand extra by making the playoffs.

The Cardinals may think they can do a soft sell and still make the playoffs. Win-win.

gscottar – Please get a new crystal ball, or maybe, just clean and shine the one you have. We’d be fighting to stay out of last place by the end of the season if we made all those trades you suggested. The only player that I think there’s a chance of being traded is May. Missing just one playoff game could cost the Cardinals hundreds of thousand dollars. If the Cards are in contention, my opinion is that none of the players you mentioned will be traded. The only trade I could see happening would be maybe trading Scott for a proven reliever which, obviously, would be a buy rather than a sell.

I guess we will find out in about six weeks but I will be surprised if they don’t sell.

So the Cardinals will abandon the rebuild in order to try to have two playoff games, with no guarantee that either one of them would be at home? That seems like the exact opposite of what Bloom has been talking about since last October. Instead of trying to get the revenue for two playoff games in 2026 they need to be thinking about how to continue to reinforce the pipeline which could lead to deeper playoff runs in 2027, 2028, and beyond, which would lead to a lot more revenue.

If they intend to do that, then we should probably be saying goodbye to one of Burleson or Herrera as well. There isn’t a reason to keep around a guy whose defensive value is so low. DHs can be found fairly easily on the market or in the draft.

It doesn’t abandon the rebuild at all, unless they start trading a bunch of prospects for rentals, which I don’t see them doing.

If they are up 2.5 games on the wild card at the trade deadline, I would expect them to hold on to May and Romero and see how far the current group can go.

If they are in the last wild card spot or worse, I would expect them to sell.

The problem for the last five years was trying to compete and rebuild at the same time. I hope they have learned something.

I understand what you’re saying, but can they get through Braves, Dodgers, Brewers, and Phillies and make the World Series? I don’t think holding on, or even adding a piece or 2 does it. So stick to building for 2028.

They aren’t going to be World Series contenders for a long time. But holding on to May and Romero and lining DeWitt’s pockets with a little more money doesn’t set the rebuild back at all. Have any of the prospects acquired in 2023 paid off for the Cardinals?

Gutting your player development and analytics staffs while throwing money at mediocre free agents isn’t trying to compete.

It’s paying lip service to the notion of trying to compete.

I am indifferent as to whether they hold May & Romero or sell them. I just don’t think it changes the direction of the club at all.

There might be other options out there but I don’t know if they would be better options at that price point. I view Herrera as an elite bat and Burleson isn’t far behind. I think I would lock those two up on extensions along with Winn and Wetherholt. I would make Walker prove it again next year to make sure 2026 hasn’t been a fluke.

My point is that they are both DH/1B types. Both are good bats (I think Herrera is better overall, as Burly still struggles against lefties). I am not saying to trade both, but trading one might make sense.

Everyone has a price I suppose but it would have to be a major offer. If Seattle would give us Cade Anderson for one of our bats then sign me up for that.

Every team would like a big time power hitter But that kind of player is almost always untouchable. And don’t we already have that player in Josh Baez? Besides, where would we even play him? I don’t want to undervalue Nootbaar veteran presence, and I think it’s too early to say that Nathan Church is not our best option for CF. I’m okay with leaving Baez at Memphis for all of 2026. That way he can still work on learning the strike zone during the inevitable, IMO, work stoppage. What this team really needs is at least one more 2 or 3 starter to go with May, an emerging Pallante, and possibly the up and coming Matthews. And there are other Cardinals pitching prospects that are about ready to show what they can do. I’ll go back to my aforementioned proposal. See if we can trade VSII for a proven middle reliever, or two. Then let’s see how far these young players can take us. Realistically, it’s going to take some really tough play for any team to beat the Brewers because of their pitching.

With Mo with the Angels now what would the Cardinals need to do to bring Reid Detmers to STL where he belongs?

    Baez and Dobbins do it?

I don’t think I’d go for that for Detmers. Too much prospect capital. Maybe Liberatore instead of Dobbins. And I’m not trading Jesus Baez either. Also, we have a bunch of lefty starting prospects in our system.

If there’s a third baseman that can be acquired, I think the Cardinals should really push hard to get him. I’v seen at least three balls roll right understand Nlaze Jordan’glove glove. Winn sees a ground ball headed for Jordan and runs behind him to get the ball in case Jordan can’t pick it up. We’d have been a lot better off we’d have kept Arenado. We are paying him anyway. But then, who would have thought Gorman was going to be such a bust?

On another note, if they trade Romero, it’s nice to see that Gastelum, TCN Pitcher of the Month, can get RH and LH batters out equally well.

If they trade Nootbaar, they ought to be able to get just about any prospect they want. Boston could use some outfield help and they like they are loaded with promising pitching prospects. The trouble is that the Red Sox are buried in the AL East, and might not want to trade.

A team can compete and rebuild at the same time.
