I dont doubt close to 8-10 club’s ability and willingness to get max- i just feel like we will be more competitive because they will see dollars better spent elsewhere. I dont know that many clubs will want to go 3 years on scherzer. We probably would. Hell if the aav is low enough 4 would surprise me.

Id love for someone to guess stomans contract correctly- that could be anywhere…$ years wise

I still like scherzer- and i think it’s possible only bc it might fall in our lap due to his age and recent IR history.

I dont believe scherzer cares about anything more than the bottom line and everything else equal pitching for a team that is willing to contend. Ive seen ppl claim how much he wants to pitch for stl- and while i dont follow the nats beat writers for quotes – ive never heard or seen anything to back that up.

That being said the cardinals are a rare bird when it comes to FAs..not willing to risk tons on $$ on a 23 yr old super phenoms upside- but willing to overpay on their downslide. Scherzer could be a perfect fit at a 3/60ish+ contract- and i think that might actually fit for everyone.

I can see 3 yrs for scherzer- no way someone gives him a mid 20s aav however. I just think other clubs will feel money is better spent elsewhere- including (hopefully) the cardinals. Hes a hall of famer – but i dont want him into his 40s.

Sometimes i think some of these threads are started because someone is bored and 100% purely trolling. It’s probably a defense mechanism to keep my faith in humanity 🤦‍♂️

If scherzer has said hed like to play for the cardinals he sure hasnt been very emphatic about lobbying for it. I have no doubt everything else equal he would like be close to home- but that implies money is equal . Ive heard dan mclaughlin imply more than once that hes inferred its a relatively unimportant factor when it comes to a contract negotiation- who knows.

Scherzer hasnt really ever volunteered the info that he’d love to play for the bfib etc ala mark buehrle- in fact when asked hes pretty much said he has no allegiance to the area/team.

That being said hes the type of pitcher big guys might end up not favoring and we could come out on top anyway. Regardless i get the feeling we aren’t getting any kind of hometown discount

You know what’s going to be great though? When we get our injured guys back- it’s going to be just like getting new free agents!!

Man i cant wait until august!

    Your comment is offensive.

All anybody is doing is pointing out he is underperforming this year, and you can’s criticize others for underperforming while giving Goldy a walk.

You need to learn some manners.

**i cant tell if this is supposed to be snark- if so well done i guess in eating crow? But its ok to call a post misguided when there is evidence against. I would have called the entire thread stupid to be quite honest but i dont like to be offensive.

Lets be clear- the owners (most of them pull the “woke” mark cuban types out) dont care about politics either. They are banking on the idea that most of the fans who disagree with politics in baseball (overwhelming majority) will roll their eyes and swallow their pride and still buy tickets/merch/streaming services. They are making a terrible business decision long term.

I dont think it will. Those who bend to the loud minority (on either side) are simply weak. The commissioner of baseball shouldnt be in that category.

Mlb operates on thinner margins than nba and nfl and is losing fan interest at a much more rapid pace. My guess is that they will simply stop after this and everyone will just go back to playing baseball.

Mandred is an absolute coward and absolutely took a political stance.

There are many states that have voter ID already because its common sense. It has nothing to do with baseball. Stand up for your views and be proud. Dont apologize- winners win and losers lose- always have, always will😂

What are the chances of Holliday being given an MLB contract at this point? I saw utley just got a 2yr/2mm….i wonder if he were offered a milb contract if he would take it or just retire…id rather have him on the 40 man for next year than luke voit, although his #s outside of yankee stadium were pretty bad. From the club’s pov he would certainly sell tickets…

“Cubs develop hitters and buy pitchers. Cards develop pitchers and acquire a few hitters, but not often enough”

***that’s the idea but you are also right that it doesnt happen often enough…the gonzales/oneill trade was one i liked…looked even to maybe tipping us on paper…but really we just got rid of an sp who had ran out of rope and room for a top 100 prospect/possible 5th outfielder with upside, who was ready to go , hopefully we can see more of it in the future**

The sad thing is that other teams who are in a similar situation projection wise the cardinals (brewers, twins just off top of head) are aggressively spending to get better. I dont know the #s revenue wise, but those teams net less than the cardinals, and will net much less over the next decade or so. So the difference is those teams might be putting themselves in a hole for the next few years to get to the postseason now, where we simply dont have that worry. Yet we sit on our hands.

I hate to sound like some people on here (or i guess old board) who bash owners regardless, but we have an extremely rich team who simply doesnt want to spend this year to contend. Spend your dollars accordingly, but Id rather have mike leake right now than unspent dry powder.

Its interesting to me the value that is put on “upside” vs “floor” in prospect rankings. Do they weight it a certain way? It seems to me that people fall in love with upside and might discount downside, at least in a what is just an ordinal ranking (quant) situation..

a year ago I would have agreed that a 32yr old fowler with 3/50mm remaining on his contract would have been easy to place somewhere with a majority salary dump. The way free agents contracts are panning out this year im not so sure.Or are you suggesting that we sit him in favor of prospects? I don’t see that happening, do you?

I would have bet the farm that Gyorko would have been elsewhere next season, still could be I guess. You’d have to think the moose deal is a given until you look at their Dwar next to each other..I dont know how much of a defensive upgrade he is. I also dont think you can pencil him in for 38 hrs a year obviously but 25 plus is realistic, again, im not sure how much of an upgrade he is there…
