1td, IMO Gray has always been a #2. On this team, he’s a #1. I would rather get a couple more #2s and develope a #1 in our system. Signing a free agent ace or trading for one is usually pretty expensive.
jj, the key to me is short term not 5-6 years.
LA, who are our starting pitchers next year? I see 4 currently.
As for Donovan, he would not be my first choice to trade but, if he had to be traded to get a GOOD fifth SP, I would not have a problem trading him. He has 2 years before becoming a free agent or needing to be signed to an extension. How long and how much money would a realistic extension be? Does he become another Matt Carpenter or Mikolas in the final years of that extension?
Better to trade a year too early rather than a year too late.
Did the Cardinals receive revenue sharing payouts in the last two years?
Bling, Wetherholt

July 22, 2025 at 10:02 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287982And another walk scores one for the Rockies.
July 22, 2025 at 10:01 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287981Rockies have the bases loaded on a high hopper infield hit, an error on a possible double play ball to Donovan, and an 11 pitch walk.
July 22, 2025 at 9:50 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287979The Cardinals have left a lot of men on base tonight.
Jnevel, since July 1:
Pozo .286/.373/.667/1.042
Pages .175/.195/.175/.370I agree that trading Gray could bring something good. However, he doesn’t want to waive his NTC the way it sounds so he is off the board for trading.
McGreevy should be starting ahead of Fedde or Mikolas.
July 22, 2025 at 9:28 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287970Fedde is owed less than $3 mil for the rest of the year. Hopefully, the Cardinals could work out something to trade him. Cut Mikolas. Leave McGreevy in the rotation and have Matz start. If Matz gets traded, start Leahy. Graceffo, Mathews, Roby or Taylor could spot start if someone gets hurt. That surely would be just as good as the current rotation.
It appears we have some hitters coming in Wetherholt and maybe Church. Also, a few others look like they might be getting closer to their abilities. However, without pitching, they won’t get too far in the postseason. If our pitching in the minors prove they are ready for the majors late next year, I would rather trade Liberatore after ’26 or buyout Gray if he is slipping.
KCB, Donovan turns 30 right after that ’27 season. How much do you pay him and for how long?
Arozarena was basically 25 when he was traded and Garcia was basically 27 when he was given away. Walker turned 23 in May and Gorman turned 25 in May. They were brought up too early and should have spent more time in the minors. I’m willing to give them another year. The only problem with Gorman is he really doesn’t have a clear path to full time playing time.
How long before any of those guys will be ready for the majors? Mathews, Hence, Hjerpe and Roby have all been injured. Doyle hasn’t even thrown 1 inning in professional baseball.
July 22, 2025 at 8:35 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287958At least we have 2 runs back and now runners on first and third.
The bad part is it’s Pages up with 2 outs.
We won’t get a top prospect for Walker or Gorman, either. We might get closer to that by trading Burleson, though.
July 22, 2025 at 8:25 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287954McMahon didn’t miss that mistake pitch.
July 22, 2025 at 8:20 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287950Fedde looked to be throwing pretty well in the second. His game is built on making guys guess wrong on the pitch and chasing. He seems to be hitting the edges of the zone.
July 22, 2025 at 8:14 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #102 thread – Tuesday, July 22 at Colorado Rockies #287948Fedde gives up 2 more runs but the Rockies got lucky on the hit by Doyle. If Arenado is able to barehand that ball, they could have got out of the inning with no runs.
We could keep guys like Burleson and Donovan, and trade guys like Gorman and Walker but what are you going to get for them? How are you going to replace them on the roster?
If either Gorman or Walker live up to their ceiling after being traded, it will be another Adolis Garcia, Arozarena, Gallen or Alcantara situation. You have to give up something of value to get the pitching we NEED to be competitive. We have a better shot of getting competitive again by trading Burleson or Donovan than trading Walker or Gorman at their lowest value.
1. Bring Crooks up and trade Pages. Crooks and Pozo are next year’s catchers.
2. Mikolas and Fedde are gone. Build the rotation around Gray, Liberatore and McGreevy. Sign a #3 SP for 2-3 years and trade for a quality SP. Either move Pallante to the pen or trade him.
3. Build the pen around Svanson, Graceffo, and Granillo. I wouldn’t mind Matz, Romero or Maton on very short commitments.
4. The only untouchables are Wetherholt, Bernal, Padilla (for now) and the 2025 draftees.
5. It would take a major haul to trade Mathews, Roby, Winn or Herrera. Church is making me wonder if he should be in this category.I like the sound of an infield of Crooks, Contreras, Donovan, Winn and Wetherholt. I am not sure that Arenado will be traded, however.
I didn’t think very many other “changes” need to be made to what Bloom has started to implement, development system wise. I do expect they will be more aggressive in the international market. I would like to see Marmol gone, though.
July 22, 2025 at 8:21 am in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #101 thread – Monday, July 21 at Colorado Rockies #287893Maybe we could sweeten the pot with a prospect plus Fedde to get a better return. I’m just not sure who, at this point. I would be willing to trade Hence since I’m not sure he can hold up to pitching. He is going less than 3 innings per start this year and is still hurt.
July 22, 2025 at 8:06 am in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #100 thread –Sunday, July 20 at Arizona Diamondbacks #287889I don’t think David Freese really qualifies but he is close. Ryan Ludwick is also close.
