It a thought about Nado but unfortunately you forget he has remaining years and $$$ on his contract. Cubs aren’t going to pay some tax to us because we’re rivals. Nado would have to approve a trade.
I don’t think anyone is forgetting Nado’s contract situation. I’m just saying that in order to do business with the Cubs I would insist they pay more than ayone else. If they balk then move on.
Well here is a big name closer who will be removed from the trade market. Perhaps it will enhance Helsley’s value a bit.
Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through Aug. 31 as part of the league’s gambling investigation. Luis Ortiz is already under the same parameters.

It was interesting listening to Jeff Jones today. He is generally in the know as much as anyone. He said:
Almost a sure thing that Helsley and Maton are traded.
Matz is complicated because of owed money but still a good chance he is moved and Cardinals eat some salary.
Lots of calls about Romero. Cardinals setting the price high.
Lots of interest in Donovan but Cardinals also setting price very high.
Likely no interest in Pozo. Teams don’t see him as a legitimate catcher.
Arenado is probably too complicated to move before the offseason. Value just isn’t there right now for teams to want him given what he’s still owed and finding a match right now is difficult.
Gray probably not interested in being moved. Owed too much money for anyone to be interested anyway.
He didn’t discuss any others.

JojoThese would all be great deadline moves and only the bullpen would be affected. Maybe they can target a AAA pitcher that is blocked as the Helsley return to fill Mikolas ‘spot’ in the rotation, since that is so important.
In 2023, that rotation replacement was Drew Rom, who made eight starts after the trade with an 8.02 ERA. Surely they can do better than that this time! 😉
I sure hope they can, Jojo actually might have greater value than Helsley right now.
Bundling Jojo and Helsley then Maton and Matz could provide them quality over quantity.
Prieto and Siani should also be moved, Church as the 4th OF would be a great test for September.
Whatever we do won’t amount to anything.
If we sell and get some prospects they ultimately won’t turn out to be worth a hill of beans.
We might as well stick with the players we have.
And try and sign a bat in the off-season.
Since we don’t have anybody that can hit finding someone that can should be our #1 priority in the off-season.

Jimmy Crooks – not likely to be moved. Cardinals probably want to get him to St Louis soon to see how he does.
Luken Baker – Could get moved but very unlikely due to lack of interest. It would probably be to a team looking for a AAA first baseman as a depth piece.
Michael Siani – Could be some interest from a team looking for a late game defensive replacement and pinch runner.

The current AAA rotation doesn’t have much either with McGreevy now in the majors. It’s really unfortunate how many injuries we’ve had among our prospects.
The Braves also just traded for Carlos Carrasco, who had been DFA’d by the Yankees. The Braves are indeed desperate.

I’d really like them to go outside the box and get Munetaka Murakami, 1B/3B. It will be a big contract, but if they want to add a player that’s impactful and still young, this is the move.
jj, I would agree except I was hoping the team would make sure Church was completely ready. No need bringing him up just because he MIGHT hit better than Hampson. The season is already a lost cause.
Just anxious for the dead ends to step aside. He needs a spot to audition like Velore’ did, but not come up and ride the pine like Hampson does.
Me too, jj, and, in my view, the primary dead ends are the Redbird manager, Johnny and, to an extent, Willie Jr. and the rest of the current Cardinal ownership group. The entire operation has become old and stale.
The Clase investigation/paid leave should definitely help the market for the Cards relievers. And where there is smoke there is usually fire….
I only see Helsley, Maton, and Matz being traded. The Clase news does help up all of their values. There are not that many good late inning RP on the market this year as there are many more buyers than sellers, and many of the sellers have no one of value near free agency to trade especially from the pen. The Cards probably have a 2 of the best 5 RP to be available this deadline.
I’m not sure why someone mentioned Crooks as wanting them gone. I really don’t think the Cards can start 2026 with Pedro Pages and he 500 OPS at catcher another year. Bernal won’t be ready by Opening Day 2025 and needs more seasoning.
I actually don’t have a problem with this. I think the team is better off keeping Gray. He is a valuable pitcher and the team would need to fill too many rotation spots for 2026.

We need somebody to take the ball every 5 days and turn in mostly decent starts. But we don’t need a pitcher making $35 Million. Of course, moving Gray is difficult or impossible, depending upon what he wants to buy out his NTC.
