Who is going to give us a for sure difference maker for an expiring contract player? Why would anyone do that? If we gat anything at all it will be injured, flyers and project type players that will be playing A and AA ball next year – or on the 60 day DL.
They may have to give up a little more than just the expiring contract. IMO, there is no reason to trade someone just because their contact is done at the end of the year. The objective is to make the team better. There is no need to move them unless we have someone in the minors who is ready to get the exposure to the majors.
I get your desire, forsch, but ZTR’s point is also relevant. It will be interesting to see if they include other players beyond the expiring contracts in order to get “A” level prospects in return. That is a lot harder to pull off.
Two years ago, the big sell-off of five major leaguers included two front line starting pitchers (Monty and Flaherty), who were more valuable at that time than any of the players whose contracts are expiring this fall.
That group brought nine prospects, of which Saggese (MLB reserve?), Svanson (MLB reliever?) and Roby (hurt) were the best acquisitions, with two years of hindsight. None were national top 100 prospect caliber.
I understand that point. I just hope we have learned something. I don’t see anyone in our minors who is being held back by an expiring contract.
I agree. No one is being held back. Now that McGreevy is up, there just isn’t anyone screaming, “I am ready”.
To the other point, I am not expecting Mo to break his mold. He will probably make trades, just to do something.
Trading away non-expiring contracts steps into Bloom’s territory (the future) and we have no idea how Bloom feels about trading MLB players for prospects. It could potentially weaken the MLB team in the short term on the bet that the “A” prospects acquired pan out.
Adding Helsley and Maton would be a really big addition to the bullpen of a World Series hopeful like Detroit. It might be what the Tigers need to put them over the top. Should Detroit give the Cardinals the prospects that they want, or should they stand pat and go with what they’ve got, and hope that they don’t regret it?

The potential problem is that there are probably close to a dozen other teams in sell mode, too. The Tigers might find another trade partner is more to their liking. No way of knowing reality, of course.
Cardinals traded Matt Adams to Atlanta for Juan Yepez. I’m guessing the ptbnl for Fedde isn’t even as promising as Yepez was.
Agree that there are other teams in sell mode. Still, Helsley and Maton would be a great addition to any bullpen. Just looking over Detroit’s top 30, a combination of Bryce Rainer and Owen Hall for Helsley and Maton might work for St. Louis and Detroit.
Both prospects are high ceiling/high risk. The high ceilings would make this trade interesting for the Cardinals and the high risk, mostly because of their age, might be enough for the Tigers to justify this deal.Obviously, this is all speculation. But I did hear the Tigers mentioned as a possible trade partner for the Cardinals today. As far as prospects, I pulled Rainer and Hall out of thin air.

As this year is really a dead cause now and the team seems to be acting like it, I’m all for trading away Helsley, Maton and Matz for whatever return they can get. It probably won’t be a ton, similar to the 2023 trades, but they won’t be doing much for this year’s team other than maybe helping them to stay above .500. I’m glad Fedde is gone. McGreevy is just a number 4ish starter, but Fedde was a #7 or 8, so that’s an upgrade.
I have been on board with trading Donovan or Nootbaar for starting pitching for a while. I would still consider that, but if Arenado could be moved while freeing up cash for later (hopefully to be used on a starter), that could also work.
It should be an interesting week here, although standing pat has been the Cardinal MO for almost all of the last 10+ years at the deadline so a couple of minor trades wouldn’t be a huge shock either.
There is no opportunity here for Mo to enhance his legacy. He will either go out with a thud or quietly fade away.
It has been reported that “collaboration” is happening, however that vague word is defined. But it is also understood that Mo is in charge this year. To the extent trades affect next year and beyond (trading away non-expiring contracts or impacting long-term financial commitments), then it is assumed Bloom will have more say. But as always, BDW Jr. makes the final call. That isn’t going to change.
There is no sense in trading Helsley and Maton away for something that is not a good return. We might just as well keep them and finish out the year winning those five or ten games that those two would bring. That would at least keep us in contention for that wild card.

It’s like you’re thinking these are cost controlled assets. You forget that both these players and Matz are on the last year of their deals. I mean maybe you get a team desperate enough who thinks they have a shot of dethroning the Dodgers or maybe a team (see Phillies) who’s window due to the age of some players might be closing that could dangle an extra low level prospect for Helsley. Maybe if you get more if you take on salary but it appears the Cardinals are almost uninterested in doing so in a couple cases.
Helsley is the centerpiece of any deal that will get us the biggest haul and maybe something near ready to contribute next season. Maton might fetch and Prospect blocked by talent or maybe a top 20-30 prospect. Matz I see a return possibly similar or maybe even less if we don’t kick down some $$$.
I would think our first trade this week should materialize tomorrow (Tuesday). I’m trying to think of the last time we made a deadline trade with our arch rivals? 1956 maybe? Be we have what they covet and likewise us towards their farm system. Helsley and/or Maton would fit like a glove in the cubbies bullpen. I don’t think Shaw’s torrid hitting since the all star break is going to lull anyone in Chicago’s front office into thinking they have their man at 3rd base for the stretch run. Shaw looks promising for the future, but if Arenado would wave his no-trade clause to ply his trade at Wrigley, his addition would be an exciting prospect.
I have had the same exact thought Pugs. The Cardinals have some assets that the Cubs really need. I doubt it happens but if so we had better make sure they have to pay the “rivals tax”, which means giving up a couple of their top 5 prospects.
After that fiasco with Arenado and the Astros over the winter, Mo might be tight lipped about any news Pugs. A boy can hope!

Some of those will be gone via trade but we may get a guy or two we may have to add to the 49. Others will be gone because they’ll be let go or contracts are ending. A couple others will be here.
It a thought about Nado but unfortunately you forget he has remaining years and $$$ on his contract. Cubs aren’t going to pay some tax to us because we’re rivals. Nado would have to approve a trade.
Bowtie isn’t being right lipped about anything because there is virtually no market for Nolan unless they kick down major coin to be rid of him.
