Because it’s the deadline and good teams will overpay for talented players, the Cardinals will trade away:

    Assuredly Helsley
    Assuredly Maton
Probably Burleson – I agree Bob!
    Probably Matz
    Probably Romero
    Maybe Pozo
Arenado if they can find a taker who pays 3/4 or more of his salary and he agrees to go.
Fedde if someone gives at least $1 for him. Otherwise he’s getting released anyway.

Low possibility of Herrera, Nootbaar, or Saggese. Someone would need to way overpay and I just don’t think that would happen for any of these 3.

I don’t see anyone else on the ML roster getting traded. It’s just not the right time.

Jnevel, why do you elevate Saggese so high? Doesn’t Wetherholt make him redundant?

Brian, that’s exactly why I put Saggese on this list – he’s now pretty redundant and has value. But he’s not really a typical trade deadline add for a team because he’s a longer term project rather than a win-now guy so I don’t see a team overpaying for him. It would just be someone making a fair value offer and the Cardinals tend to hold onto this type of player unless the offer looks great.

The other 2 – Herrera and Nootbaar – I added only because some team might be willing to way overpay for one of them. But in the case of someone like Donovan or Winn or Scott, I think the Cardinals would just say no up front and not even consider the offer. Therefore they didn’t even make my list of possibles.

This is just me guessing at what I think the Cardinals will do.

Donovan, Winn and Scott are us “up the middle”. To pitch and defend well, those positions deserve extra weight as a core need. Same goes for JJ, if Donny becomes an outfielder.

Noot won’t be traded because of his rib injury. He’s suffered long enough with it and isn’t even rehabbing, yet. Teams won’t pay for that uncertainty. He would be a throw in at this point.

Bob, I would love to have Donovan, Winn and Herrera signed for 2 years into free agency. Well, I could wait another year on Herrera but the other 2 would be good.

If someone wanted a comp for Donny, I’d suggest Cronenworth. He agreed to an extension around arb1/2?
Similar enough players (+or-) and a projection of an extension, could be ballpark enough to work from.

If Dewitt can’t afford Donovan’s salary he needs to sell the team, he has to much versatility, you can’t have a line up with a bunch of guys struggling to hit .230, not to mention the Edman trade disaster

Edman’s line for the year: .227/.279/.397/.676.
    Edman’s line since May 1: .211/.269/.316/.585.

In 55 plate appearances in July Edman has hit .143/.222/.204/.426.

jj, I have noticed you mentioned Wetherholt not being a 3bman due to the fact he hasn’t played there yet. Do you think that is because the Cardinals already have Arenado, Gorman, Saggese and Donovan to play there? I haven’t seen anything in any reports that indicate to me he doesn’t have the arm, hands or mobility to play there. I am wondering if the Cardinals thought coming into this season that Gorman will be the next full time 3bman so they wanted Wetherholt to concentrate on only 1 new position to make his future home at second.

All I know is he was a high draft pick. Must have been someone else Forsch. For me, he is a “up the middle” guy.

Didnt know exactly where to put this comment but this thread seemed best.i just read that the cardinals have raised whole season ticket prices by 15 percent for next season and moved the cutoff to early september instead of the normal january. Seems pretty greedy to me given they have cut a fair amount of payroll already. This organization needs new ownership fast

Seems like a good way to decrease attendance putting such an early deadline and having it at the end of a down season. January they could at least maybe get some extra ticket sales trading or signing an exciting player.

There was some discussion on the trade deadline thread about roster redundancy and who should be moved over the winter. I agree there is some redundancy and the roster needs to be cleaned up but I would be careful about trading away players who are actually productive. Herrera, Donovan, and Burly are our three best hitters. For a team that is starved for offense I wouldn’t trade more than one of those guys unless we are saying that we are punting on 2026 and we don’t intend to be competitive until 2027 or 2028. If that is the case then we should say that upfront.

I would rather move Gorman and Walker to clean up the redundancies. Yes I know their trade value is low. Do you know why it is low? It is because they aren’t very good MLB players. While some still think they could achieve their potential as high pedigree prospects I am more skeptical of that.

Of course the other elephant in the room is Arenado. His situation is a real dilemma for next year. I think Bloom needs to have a direct conversation with him and let him know that he is not viewed as a full time player next year. At best he might get a spot start at 3B or the occasional day at DH but otherwise will be a bench bat. Now that might drive BDW crazy to pay someone that kind of money to sit on the bench but if we are truly going to give younger guys some runway then this conversation needs to happen. Of course even if Arenado decided to waive hit NTC my guess is that Cardinals would probably have to pay close to half of his remaining money owed to move him.

Do I think it would be wise to move both Gorman and Arendo this winter? No probably not but if Arenado leaves then Gorman is not really redundant any longer. That doesn’t make him a better hitter though.

This seems like a clear attempt to reduce ticket sales so MLB will start treating them like the small market team they are and start giving them those welfare dollars.

I absolutely would not trade Donovan and Herrera. I would get rid of Walker.

Burleson – depends on the return. But right now, we have three DH/1B’s for two positions. Burleson should not play in the outfield. Whether Herrera can become good enough to play the outfield remains to be seen.

Gorman, I am rather indifferent. I would rather trade Saggese, who hits less and can’t really play 3B, but supposedly can play SS.

Goeman wasn’t very good defensively at 2B, passable, but not good. If he plays 3B consistently, the same might be true. And that’s not going to happen because Arenado is our third baseman for 2026. His defense is not as good as it once was but it is still elite. Gorman still has tantalizing power, so he has trade value. I like the way Saggese plays. He seems like s gamer and he has always hit. I see Donovan as a super utility guy. Trade Gorman. Play Donovan or Saggese at 2B until Weatherholt forces his way into the lineup. We need Burleson as a backup outfielder and first baseman, IMO. Walker has turned himself into a singles hitter but at least he gets on base. He still has power potential. I’d like to keep him around until we see how that turns out. Josh Baez will get a call up and a look in 2026. By the time Arenado retires, Jesus Baez, Blaze Jordan, or ??? should be ready for 3B. All in all I guess what I’m saying is that I see Gorman as our only realistic trade piece in the coming offseason. Should bring a promising pitcher. BTW, Bernal is now ranked as the Cardinals third best prospect.

I’d like to trade Nootbaar for a nice pitching piece, either prospect or major leaguer. IMO, Siani is still the best defensive CF in the game. VS II has not reached his ceiling yet, so I believe he will get better and better, But we still need a backup for him. Siani should get some reps in left and right field, just in case.

A reset like the one we’re going through can be kind of fun as long as there is hope and potential on the way, and as long as you don’t get fixated on winning the somewhat watered down WS every year and just enjoy the development and the play of new young players, and the actions of the organizations as they try to accomplish something.

Walker and Gorman gone in the off-season. I’ve seen enough today to know that these guys need to bring playing elsewhere next season or heck maybe just send them to AAA and bring a couple guys up. Just had enough!

Players we have that can play for anybody:

    Winn ss
    Hererra lf / dh
    Donovan 2b

    Players who are worth keeping:

Contreras c (he doesn’t really hit enough at 1b so let’s move him back behind the plate?)
Scott II cf – I think he WILL hit and then he WILL steal bases
Burleson 4th of / dh – I’d like to keep him around

Players we need to replace via trade/cut:

Pages / Pozo c – both are barley even back up catchers – We need a starting catcher and keep one of these.
Gorman 3b – cant’ hit and is an absolute DISASTER at 3b
Walker rf – can’t hit and is barely serviceable in the field – he just looks uncomfortable at all times – park him at AAA until further notice.
Saggesse / Fermin utility – guys like these are a dime a dozen at the ML level
Nootbar rf – can’t hit enough and can’t stay healthy
Arenado 3b – great player, great career but it’s over. I bet he now regrets killing the Houston trade last winter

Starting Pitching: (we need 3 starters better than any of the 5 we have right now)

Gray / Mikolas – jettsion asap
    Liberatore – ok as a 3 /4
    Pallante / McGreevy – good for 4 / 5 spots

Bullpen: Romero can close next year – I guess. If we suck we can dump him at the deadline.

Just whatever – keep cobbling one together this is one thing the Cardinals seem to be able to do reasonably well.

(Wetherholt is killing AAA so maybe he can take over 3b next year?)

It’s real simple to me in the sense that they need 3 things…An impact bat capable of pushing 100 baserunners across HP. A SP’er that can step in as the premier member of the rotation who’s much more consistently effective than Gray. And, of course, a Big League manager.

Contreras c (he doesn’t really hit enough at 1b so let’s move him back behind the plate?)

Contreras has hit more than fine this year. He got off to a really rough start, but has a 123 wRC+ which would put him 10th of 26 qualified 1B. Not great, but more than serviceable and a quality #5 hitter who is playing comfortably at an average to above average starters rate. The only problem I see is most of the other starters fall into the same range and the team has many 2 WAR guys, but not anyone that would put up 5 WAR.

Yeah agree 1TD especially on the bat side. There just isn’t elite players on this team since the org has been so safe the last 5 years and not taking risk for upside players.
