Rats: They currently lead the Brewers 7-3 in the 2nd.
They hung 21 on ’em!(Judge went deep thrice)

… Casey Stengel credited Yogi with a major reason for the success his Yankee Teams had. He was their primary catcher for many years
64 Card are you trying to say you would Take Yogi over Bench, Torre, Simmons, Piazza or Michey Cochcran?
Yogi comes to mind
Now thats a goofy thing to say, Dommy! Drop any good catcher on a team eith Maris, Mantle , Tresh, Pepitone, Elston Howard, Moose Skowron and Whitey Ford and they would have a buncha rings too
Non-pitcher would be Willie Mays.
Dammit Bling you nailed it!
That’s a tough one, LeGrand. I really can’t choose one player, but if I could, I’m almost certain his first name would be Manny
LOL Dom. True it’s a tuff one, so let me narrow down the choices: No pitchers because they can only make an impact once every 4 or 5 days.
No one dimentional players like Ruth; too many other skills required (I would take Hornsby before the Babe for that reason) But Rogers would still rank 2nd or 3rd for me
Let me ask ‘yall a question: You are GM starting a team, who would be your 1st pick of all from the history of the live ball era? Please give me your answer and I will try to convince you that you’re wrong 😉
September 13, 2024 at 3:54 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #147 thread – Friday, Sept. 13 at Blue Jays #267196The odds were worse in ’64, wern’t they? Here’s the formula for us to swing it: Mets and Braves must play around .500 ball while we go on a tare. Get a good defender in right and platoon Goldy vs. righties.
Odds of those 4 things happening is slim, but 95% fail is rediculas. How about 80-20?

That’s surprising. Don’t know if it’s good or bad tho’
September 11, 2024 at 7:13 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #145 thread – Wednesday, Sept. 11 vs. Reds #267092Lynn should be ‘fresh’. Looking for a complete game, three hit shutout from him today
LOL…good one!

August 23, 2024 at 6:40 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #128 thread – Friday, August 23 at Twins #265296Well, we have had a couple of late innings wins of late in games I had already given up on.
Funny, but back in ’64, like 12 games out on Sept. 1st I hadn’t given up hope. But a Brewers collapse like Philly had is completely out of the question in my jaded old arse’s mind

August 17, 2024 at 6:55 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #123 thread – Saturday, August 17 vs. Dodgers #264649Keep, I remember that game! The reason is I lost a pal who I bet 10 bucks that we would beat Philly. I was in montana so I could’nt watch it. Neither he or I knew who was starting.
After work we went to his house to watch highlights. When he saw it was Stuper who of course pitched a gem he was furious asserting that I KNEW he was the starter! He would never give me any action after that
Bike, I found that Card Fan site and can’t wait to check it out later
August 17, 2024 at 6:01 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #123 thread – Saturday, August 17 vs. Dodgers #264640You have a most fond memory of a regular season game? Here’s mine: July 1964 Koufax has us burried 7 to 1 in the bottom of the 9th
I’m on the floor listening with my Gramps who lived and died with the Team. Today I would have turned the game off, but hope in the young is of course eternal.
Have a listen @ 1:35

August 16, 2024 at 8:42 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #122 thread – Friday, August 16 vs. Dodgers #264542Merlin Olsen is another one that was a great professional athlete and did quite a lot of acting
There you go Bike! Big time player and a good actor. That comment jarred my memory: Dick Butkus played the heavy in a big time TV miniseries I saw I saw after ROOTS set the mark for the genre…RICH MAN, POOR MAN with Nick Noltey.
Dick probably got more parts that I’m not aware of after that
August 16, 2024 at 6:27 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #122 thread – Friday, August 16 vs. Dodgers #264506I thought about Uek but he’s FAR from a big name in baseball history. But he is certainly the best bench warmer turned comedian, turned actor to ever do it
August 16, 2024 at 2:47 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #122 thread – Friday, August 16 vs. Dodgers #264491Please allow me to un-roll the ugliness for a bit. Watching FIRST TAKE this morn as who was the greatest Yankee was discussed as the live NY crowd roared JEETER
Mad Dog Russo went off on the young, ignorant throng and asserted that Jeeter was #5 at best, and WE know who those other 4 are.
See, this generation knows nothing of the old timers old timers exept Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. The mention of Lou Gherig made me think of the Babe’s small role in PRIDE OF THE YANKEES
It got me thinking: was there ever big sports star that later became a good actor? I thought and thought but came up blank.
Joe namath in that biker flick with Ann-Margret? NO
Rowdy Roddy Piper in whatever that Movie was? NO
Jim Brown? Hmmm…his acting was flat as a pancake early on, and was actually not awful in that prison break movie with Gene Hackman (can’t think of the title) Still it’s NO
Am I forgetting somebody?
