Also BS Southeast and Southwest ExtraSeptember 9, 2024 at 3:03 pm #266947Folks,
We better enjoy these next three weeks. Win or lose we better enjoy it. The reason being is after these next three weeks it will be nearly five months before we have Cardinal baseball and these game threads. The end of the baseball season was always sort of a sad day for me.

September 9, 2024 at 3:42 pm #266951Yeah, me too, but there’s baseball outside of StL. and the playoffs should provide some good post-season action. Providing they qualify, I’ll be watching and rooting for the Royals. KC’s a really good baseball town.
September 9, 2024 at 4:18 pm #266953Anybody remember Municipal Stadium in KC? The first time I saw the Royals play they were still there.
September 9, 2024 at 5:04 pm #266954I actually remember Municipal Stadium not from baseball but from Chief’s games that were broadcast on TV during late 60’s and early 70’s, Bling. The Royals really didn’t enter into my orbit until the mid 70’s when they were already playing at Kaufmann. Brett, Wilson, McRae and Whitey were the obvious stars of those teams, but the guy that I most liked to watch was little Freddie Patek…Haha! Those teams just couldn’t seem to get past the Yankees, but they sure provided some intense playoff action in those classic 5 game ALCS matchups.

ParticipantAh 1tough, bringing us a blast from the past. Freddie patek. I had forgotten about him. I too liked him.
September 9, 2024 at 6:22 pm #266960Agree 1TD! I remember my family and I watched the classic Dolphin-Chief OT Playoff game in that stadium. Some classic Chief-Raider match ups as well. I seem to recall the Raiders kicking a long field goal to win a game. Hank Stram had Morris Stround (6’10” Tight End) stand on the goal line to swat down a low trajectory kick!
Found this:
September 9, 2024 at 7:01 pm #266962I vividly recall watching that Chief’s/Dolphin’s AFC Championship game played on Christmas Day, 64. I also recall it being a really good Christmas, as I was gifted a couple of really nice additions to my HO scale train set-up…Haha! I always think of the two great soccer style kickers, Stenerud and Yepremian, when I think of that game.
September 9, 2024 at 7:13 pm #266963I wasn’t a football fan back then, probably because my dad wasn’t. He had grown up in the New York City area and once he moved ‘west’ to St. Louis he had to drive over to KC to see the Philadelphia Athletics who had also moved west. So he got used to taking in games in KC and kept on doing it once the Royals were there. If I was ever taken along to a game when it was still the A’s, I don’t remember. One time I got a batting practice foul ball signed by Amos Otis. That was back when fans used to throw back the fouls during batting practice and I don’t really remember how I got him to sign it.
September 9, 2024 at 7:16 pm #266964Never was at KC Municipal Stadium but like you guys I watched football games on television played there. Also the KC Athletics played there, but were rarely on the “Game of the Week” back then since they were always lousy.
I heard it was kind of a rundown park in a not-so-great area. Always liked the AFL back in the youthful days. Those Chiefs were great, and I met Len Dawson at a collectibles show one time had had him sign an SI that featured him on the cover. Some great names come to mind – Mike Garrett, Curtis McClinton, Fred Arbanas, EJ Holub, Buck Buchanan, Bobby Bell, Johnny Robinson (met him as well).
More on nostalgia, I saw that original Met Ed Kranepool passed away.
September 9, 2024 at 7:30 pm #266965Speaking of Kranepool, I heard a story told at Shannon’s restaurant after a game that the Braves were about to trade Torre to the Mets for Kranepool but at the last minute the Cardinals offered Cepeda and the Braves took it. If it wasn’t for that, Kranepool wouldn’t have been a life long Met. Of course, some of the stories told around that table at Shannon’s were of the tall tales variety.
September 9, 2024 at 7:36 pm #266966I was out of my mind about NFL football until I was in my early 30’s, Bling. At one time I thought it was an incredibly competitive and entertaining league. No more. Not even a little.
September 9, 2024 at 7:44 pm #266967Yeah, those AFL and early NFL Chief’s were one of my favorites too, Bikemike. There aren’t too many better sound bites than those of the great Hank Stram…”Try a 65 toss power trap…It might pop wide open, Rats”…Haha! He was also really good on the CBS radio broadcasts alongside Jack Buck.
September 9, 2024 at 7:50 pm #266968Yeah, Bling, those stories broadcast from Shannon’s tended to become a bit more embellished as the night got later and the laughs got louder as the amount of the beer tab increased, but they were sure entertaining!
September 9, 2024 at 8:22 pm #266972Speaking of Monday Night Football,
I can’t get it. It’s not on ESPN. Something about ABC not allowing it. First time in 50+ years that I won’t be able to see MNF.
September 9, 2024 at 8:26 pm #266973That Torre-for-Kranepool deal sounds familiar and I think I have heard that as well. I was shocked we traded Cepeda, as was my dad. A cornerstone of two consecutive pennants and a year removed from the MVP. Pretty risky move.
Buck and Stram were indeed great on MNF. I heard of people turning the television commentary off as Howard Cosell drove them nuts, and they would put the radio broadcast on.
Stram would often say stuff like, “the Rams can do some business on the left side of the line if they want to run there.” He used that “do some business” phrase quite a bit. 😀
September 9, 2024 at 8:26 pm #266974Cancelled due to low ratings…
September 9, 2024 at 8:31 pm #266975Rats, tonight’s game is on ABC. Not sure if all of them will be.
September 9, 2024 at 8:40 pm #266976I’m reasonably sure most everyone recalls the original MNF theme song. The name of it was, “Heavy Action.” If that song didn’t get you amped up for action, it meant you were dead.

Lived in Independence home of Harry Ass Truman. Used to go to A’s games until Charlie moved after the 67 season. They broadcast the Cardinals in 68. Became a Cardinal fan. Watched the Royals but I bleed Cardinal Red. After College in 1980 moved to StLouis so I could go to Cardinals games.
September 10, 2024 at 11:04 am #266999The first MLB game I ever attended was at Kauffman Stadium in 1976 to see the Royals and Red Sox in a doubleheader. I was 8 years old at the time and I remember seeing Carl Yastrzemski.
As for the NFL, most of my family have always been big Chiefs fans as I still am today. My dad talked about Len Dawson all the time. The last few years have been surreal to see them have the kind of success they have had. They have turned into a dynasty.
However, I must say that as a kid in the late 70’s and early 80’s I was also fond of the football Cardinals. Jim Hart, Mel Gray, OJ Anderson, Conrad Dobler, Dan Dierdorf, Roger Wehrli, and Neil Lomax were all good players. I was sad to see the team go to Arizona.

Longest game in Nfl history. Cristmas day 1971. My mom had standing rib roast when we got home. Real treat for our family. Ed Podolack set record for most all purpose yards.

Me too Rat.
September 10, 2024 at 12:08 pm #267007I see where we are calling up Saggese. I read somewhere that he is an elite prospect.
He was hitting .253 in the minors. I don’t believe that makes him out to be an elite prospect.

September 10, 2024 at 12:30 pm #267008I’d be more worried about his OBP.
Winn had been quoted as being winded and seen limping a tad around the clubhouse. Maybe possible Donny’s Injury is a little more severe and they don’t want to give Fermin more reps than what he deserves. They need to make roster moves on the 28 man but they already have room on the 40 man. Wonder who gets demoted?
